....but seriously what are the applications for boxes like these. I mean - other than uses for lawrence livermore labs etc... big ass iron like this seems to only really be useful for 1. nuclear modelling 2. benchmark testing press releases.
I know that someone somewhere is going to use a box like this - but tell me for what real world application will you use it. (serious question - curious. I want to know the reall apps these are used for)
I have been playing games ever since the early commodores in 4th grade. The drives were tape drives - cassette tape drives. I'm almost 28.
I was just wowing over screenshots just this morning... I will likely play games until I am very old. I cant wait to see what they are like when I am 50....
but I dont really pay attention to hardware as much as I used to. one, because I quit being an IT manager - and two, because things are faster, cheaper, better all the time. The only thing i marvel at is looking at what i paid for parts - then seeing what you get for the same - or less these days.
In '96 I built a dual 266 PII system. Each Processor was $750.00. Do you have any idea of the system you can get for $750 these days!.
I guess I finally understand the old addage: "When I was your age......"
when my kids (I dont have any yet) are my age, computers will be seamlessly integrated into thier surroundings. they will likely be a sloid cube of chip that contains every component a "modern" machine has in about 1 cubic inch - and will just be replaced rather cheaply when you find the need to upgrade.
I had similar problems with the barracudas.... we had 20 servers with about 10 drives each. we had failures left and right - and were using the DPT controllers as well.
We had a slew of spare drives in the closet for failure replacements - and each one of these drives cost about 900.00 at the time.
crappy ass drives.
We eventually replaced all of them with new ones - and now I have a happy little raid box at home, I have all the "known goods" from that time.
funny thing is they are all 9Gb drives...
I still have a 3Gb drive that I bought ~95 for shitloads of money... still works too. gotta love the size/power and price of components these days.
Only thing is - with all this power I still dont seem to get more done.
I for one NEVER return any calls that are left by automated machine. also - if I ever get any calls with "please hold for the next available representative" etc... I just hang up. and never call them back when requested.
I was out of work for almost two years in this recent economic slump - and I have some bad credit now... not too much - only about 3500... but since I was making NO income, I could not pay some bills. Now that I am working again - I am trying to get caught up...
even though they are calls from creditors - my philosophy is: If they cant take the time to have a real person call me - I will not pay them, or call them until they do.
I dont care about credit ratings - I maintain average credit, but for the most aprt I buy *everything* cash only. The only reason why I used the card I had was due to not working for 1.75 years and running out of my savings. I have bought my last three cars in full with cash payments, which does not go down on your credit BTW...
Any company that uses automated customer services does not deserve me as a customer. I am actually thinking about starting a coalition that gets members to join just so we can petition companies into realizzing that excellent customer service (with real live people) directly effects the bottom line. and that shitty automated services just drives frustrated customers away.
sadly though - I think it would be a losing battle as coporations could give a shit about real live human customers.
... when I was about 8 or so years old I saw tron - and at night I used to go to sleep praying that god would give me one of those bars that turned into the motorcycles from that one scene where they were racing in the grid (cant remember it too well now). I would awaken in the morning and look under my bed - but no magical motocycle rod was to be found. I did this for weeks after seeing that movie.
"Who the hell would be dumb enough to buy one of these? Not people... companies? Possibly.. When corporations are held liable for employees downloading files then maybe companies might go to buy these as a liability hedge."
exactly... or the thing that will happen is that the boxes will be sold at a great financial loss to people so as to hedge the "losses" from piracy.
so some companies will think that they are getting a deal on the machines - but really they will be hurting themselves by getting locked into some crappy system.
Well I dont know about politcal flash games, but this one is a hell of a lot of fun. We usually do it while drinking and see who can get the highest score - the more buzzed you get, the more difficult it is to avoid the obsticles.
what if these are hackable - and you could, in the future, hack a video phone to provide you a video feed without the other end even knowing its on.
What if this was a FEATURE - you know, to thwart the terrorists - and the feds could take a peek into your home anytime they just wanted to check up on *not you*!! but the terrorists oh, and maybe the children.
thats one reason I dont ever want video phones. the only reason why I would actually want it is 1-976-HOT-SEXX.
Take a look around. There are things that can be discerned through observation, you know. Are you one who requires that anything and everything you know must be told to you via documented facts. That someone else need show you the world around you.
Maybe you should go back to school and listen to what they tell you to know - rather than finding things out through the experience of living.
....and if you dont buy one of these then the terrorists have already won.
...in my head was of naked warwalkers. but, isnt it cold in toronto? just think of the shrinkage.
thats not free. just because its included in the amount you are paying for tuition does not make it free. it subsidized, not free.
it was said that IPv6 provides enough addresses for every square centimeter on Earth to have its own addy.
now that mars is in the picture - whats the area per IP upto now?
the tighter they grip - the more interplanetary internet warez sites will slip through their fingers.
Are we sure this was the "Real Bruce Perens" - check his employee number to be sure.
(play on his old sig)

flipper.... thats a name from the past. wow. forgot about flipper. punk band right?
did you know that monty python has produced more records than the beatles?
hehe. thanks, I was thinking the exact same thing...

it costs less than $1.00 per Gb now... in hard drives. but its funny how expesive per Mb floppies still are....
but what i really want is very high capacity USB keychain storage. like those - but with several GB of capacity - and built in security....

as we all know from watching commando - all you have to do to hide your heat signature is cover yourself in mud.

This game is very simplistic - yet very fun.
Also another fun diversion is this one, called ant arena (at bottom of page)

Just curious - whenever some thing comes along with a "novel" method of communication - people have to immediately try to push it on my grandma.
"Have the kids call Grandma this"
"Grandma can see the kids that"
I mean, I cant even get my grandma to look at a computer - and she is mostly deaf, where email would really help her.
but she hates technology - just write a letter she says.
we all know that it will be the young technophiles that will be early adopters, so you should say things like:
"get a new girlfriend with this nifty whiz bang video phone that shows your technical prowess"
right - but I can get those same things through martial arts - without flailing about in public on some machine.
I'm not stuck up about it though. I know my troll could kick your troll's ass any day!
