    I'm with you here..

I've met a couple of the suicide girls here in Portland, nice people, very real. The only way I knew that I'd met them was a willy week article that pointed out where they worked (??!!). Never been to the site, my relationships forbids, but I can't see what nintendo would possibly have against a free bump from presumably attractive women.

After all, it seems like advertisings age old adage is, 'SEX SELLS'. IIRC correctly, if you enter the right code in metroid, you end up playing as a hot albiet pixilated woman. Nintendo may have gone towards a kiddie console setup, but they do still sell M rated games.

It's the evangelism that makes me bash, you know. The evangelical tradition is Christians bashing everyone else's beliefs. How often have I heard "Repent sinner, or go to hell!" from your ilk. Go ahead and get twitchy, but know that YOU are the cause of your own troubles.

When you are ready to have an enlightened, peaceful religion, you will drop the conversion drive, let people live their lives, and keep the core tenants of your religion, which are mostly good. Until then, you are just a bunch of petty bastards arguing over souls that don't belong to you.

But back to the topic at hand.. Seems like and interesting story ('Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell', not the bible). I generally don't get on well with fantasy stories set in the near past, present or the future, because well, I'm pretty sure that no magic is happening in those time zones. However, if the presentation is subtle (see John Crowley's 'Little, Big' fro an example of what I refer to), I can ussually suspend disbelief for long enough to enjoy the story. With amazon listing it at 16.99$, sounds like it might be worth the time.

Actually, "Evolution" probably took it out for a positive reason, not just because we didn't need it.

I don't think that it's gone. Your lady may want to have sex with you on a regular basis, but she is most fertile on certain days of her cycle. The natural planning method of birth control would work, except for the fact that sperm are able to live for quite some time whilst looking for an egg to fertilize.

If you really pay attention to your woman, you might notice that she does still have cycles, and that she's way hornier at certain times of the month. ;) It's about the only thing that makes up for the fact that they bleed for a week straight. :D

I think that the original function of the fertility cycle probably has to do with the timing of which offspring are born. Animals are ruled by the weather.. If the offspring are born at the wrong time (say, during the middle of winter), they may well not survive. Humans have largely mastered the effects of weather, thus eliminating the need for a cycle that prevents us from bearing children in the winter.

I'm a bladesmith, and I work with a propane fired forge on a regular basis. Even my properly aspirated burners don't burn well without containment and back pressure. If you pull a burner out of the forge, it sputters real bad and doesn't produce nearly as much heat.

Most of the time, a straight propane leak (without
proper aspiration) will blow it self out, even with an open flame nearby. Sure, it's stinky, and if you get the mix with atmostphere wrong it could blow up if contained properly, but generally, LPG is pretty safe stuff.

  16. Re:Goodbye privacy on RFID for Automobile Tracking · · Score: 2, Insightful

Perhaps you should read and understand the article before you tell everyone else to.

There is clear mention of using the technology for toll road systems..

"Proponents of the technology maintain that DSRC systems will also be able to replace existing highway RFID applications such as automatic toll collection systems like EZ-Pass. "There is nothing that current systems do that DSRC systems won't be able to do in a breeze--while it's idling in fact," says Richard Schnacke, vice president of industry relations for TransCore and the chairman and spokesperson for the DSRC Industry Consortium."

That makes it pretty obvious that data can be passed BOTH ways in the system. Is it important that the RFID chips are located in the street sign, or in the car? If they can use the technology in ways that they aren't directly advertising, that makes me nervous.

It seems to me that the dedicated short range communications (DSRC) system that they are proposing is easily upgradable from simple RFID chips on the roadside to more advanced DSRC boxes. I'm not sure if the stated 1 km range of the DSRC system is between two DSRC boxes, or between a DSRC unit and a roadside RFID chip, but I can see an easy implementation in which the RFID chips are made to transmit info to a more periodically spaced set of road side RSRC units. Such a system could easily track the speed and position of a vehicle, and transmit it to any given authority in very near real time. Hell, they would probably even give you speeding tickets remotely..

What really disturbs me about the development and possible deployment of this system is it's stated goal, "part of the agency's efforts to cut road fatalities in the U.S. by 50% within 10 years." I'm uncertain that warnings about upcoming road conditions will reduce the level of traffic fatalies by anywhere near 50%. The only way I can see this system having any sort of serious effect is if they use it to actively track and remove serial vehichle offenders.

Then, ANY kind of work that you do on a new engine might very well cause it to blow up. A buddy of mine blew a head gasket in his Honda trying to get a relatively small gain in horsepower/torque.

Most geeks are much safer and less likely to destroy an engine when blowing some code into a PROM than they would be actually modifying an engine in a more traditional sense.
