You know what's way more annoying that other people talking on the phone? Whingers who have nothing better to do than complain about other people being on the phone. How is it your business if they're on the phone, and how do you know if it's important to them who they're talking to? Of course you turn the bloody thing to silent or off in the theatre, but in the mall, or on a bus or a train or a plane, why should you care?

The short of it is, if the project is small enough for you to just sit in a corner and do it by yourself, then you don't need UML at all. But for large, complicated systems that are meant to handle all sorts of different data in all sorts of ways (and be extensible), and are being worked on by 2 or more programmers full-time, then you bet you need it. Not UML per se, but some sort of agreed-upon standard amongst your developers. When you've got a system with well-defined domains, all being worked on by different people (and swapping sometimes), just the leisure of having all your interfaces / empty classes generated helps enourmously for interoperation and cooperation between developers.

Look it's pretty simple. When you get to the point where there's gonna be a fight and you can't avoid it, headbut the biggest guy first before somebody decides to hit you. A liverpool kiss is a great demoralizer, and anybody not serious will back off right away. Then kick the second biggest bloke in the nuts and start swinging. Take a few of them with you. They'll think twice about giving you a hard time in the future, and other people definitely won't.

Crashes - There were horrible compatibility issues. Lots of games made you select from a list of components for video and sound. Alot of times my stuff wasn't on the list (darn you Tandy!). So I'd end up with junky graphics, and/or glitchy or non-working sound. Later on sound cards (like the first sound blaster) would randomly crash your system if things weren't setup just right (IRQs, memory addresses). Then when the first dedicated video cards started coming out they were the random crasher.
