I've been looking forward to convert my mp3 collection to ogg. Only one thing holds me back :
The sayings are for an equivalent bitrate, I will get more quality from ogg. So theorically, converting from mp3 to ogg MIGHT be psychoacoustically lossless.
For instance, suppose my CD contained 'abcdefghij' and my mp3 encoder transformed 'abcde', which I still heard as 'abcdefghij'. It might be possible that converting from mp3 to mp3 I get 'abc', which I would still hear as being 'abcde', and therefore as 'abcdefghij'.
However, this is not necessarily the case. mp32ogg might also convert to 'abd' or even 'abz', which I would not necessarily perceive as 'abcdefghij'.
So questions to you audio engineers (IAOAEE - I Am Only An Electronics Engineer):
Will I indeed get audible distortions ?
What bitrate ratio do you recommand for the conversion ?
Arrrriane waves its private parts at your aunties ! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries ! We fart in your general direction !
TL1: What happen?
TL2: Somebody set up us the merger.

SRA: All your rinux are belong to us
TL1: what you say !!
You are a true comedy genius ! What do you think of this one ?
step 1: put $ 100m into software distributed for free
step 2:?????????
setp 3: PROFIT !!!!
Also, they'll almost certainly be around in three years, if something breaks.
Well most parts are guaranteed by the manufacturer anyway. Any part is also obsolete within three years. Any self respected local shop will gladly take over maintainance from a dead colleague.
Besides,
1) how can you be sure in the current climate that the OEM you chose will be around one year from now ? (Worldcom ? They make millions ! Enron ? Go get YOUR shares today !)
2)the smaller the retailer, the cheaper the lawyers they can afford to screw you in the maintainance contract.
I can understand it's more expensive to build a system from discrete parts, but small retailers will be happy to sell you a 'clone' for approximately 20 percent cheaper than a same specs Dell/HPaq/Gateway. Just buy one of those. Now you can tell me that
Problems are more documented on an OEM machine. Maybe they are, but nothing is holding you from buying one of those, and make specs out of them for your local shop. Besides, you'll get more problems from the chinese mobo the OEMS put in nowadays to get a higher margin than from a typical Asus/Abit/MSI mobo, and you'll get no dirty onboard shared memory display adapter and mono soundcard.
A small shop may sell you ten machines, but no 10,000.True, but they can easily build 10 machines a day, you can order from concurrent shops, and in the end the machines still have to be installed, and a sysadmin and his slaves can't install those in a week either anyway.
...and see what a dictature they live in ! Now not only does the state know people's gender, they know people's AGE too ! This is ludacris ! Before you'll know, they will keep people's ADRESS too ! Ludacris !
Broadband is useless : it's only useful for applications that are illegal or at least against Terms of Service.
Want to download music ? Illegal. Want to download flicks ? Illegal. Want to run a server > Against ToS. Want to download commercial software ? Illegal.
The only thing I can think of that's legal, is downloads of free software. About a few ISO's per year, for a very small percentage of the users (the geeks). No need for gigabit ethernet networks for that.

Insert "back in my day, we had lines of text and we LIKED IT!"-type ranting here...
Back in the days, we didn't have those stinking lines of text. A couple of blinkenlights was all we had, and we were happy with it too ! And when one light was defect, we had to walk 50 miles with bare feet in the snow to get a new one. One christmas day our father came back from the mine with a teletype and we became the attraction of the neighbourhood.
Just a stupid question : could Microsoft use the same trick to disallow linux on the XBox ?
..he just LOVES shared medium.

yes but you can't deny sometimes you get a low framerate when watching american movies from your chicken coop.

Were the demo mp3s encoded ON the atari ?
actually, it makes a not necessarily square rectangle.
Does anyone know where I can find a contrib rpm for the app ? The source doesn't compile on this machine...

Never heard of.
Ah ! Those were the days...
