I imagine SCO was just another acronym that Linux newbies/Windows users ignored, but now all this press (negative or not) is bringing out a new level of awareness. I can see it now... a new SCO user base will arise out of this bad publicity. End users who would have never considered using SCO will now start using it religiously, just to go against the mainstream. Kinda like "rebel consumers" who won't buy certain brands like ECKO because it's too popular.

  3. It must suck for Ebert and other reviewers... on Review: Matrix: Reloaded · · Score: 1

...to feel obligated to make sence of The Matrix' plot, when they know damn well it's just a bunch of fancy doublespeak. The magic of The Matrix and The Matrix: Reloaded comes when one accepts the premise wholly and without question. Just sit back and enjoy the movie.

If you analyze every sentence - every nuance of the movie - you need a girlfriend or a job (or both).

Funny how some people will repeatedly read and nearly commit to memory Lord Of The Rings (or devote so much thought into The Matrix storyline) but never even consider reading The Bible.

Good, I have your attention. But I'm not going to back down from my subject heading; hear me out before you mod me down to the nether regions.

There is always an alterior motive in TV, especially children television programming. Every cartoon, every second of airtime is optimised to sell a product, an idea, a lifestyle. Child psychologists are hired by toy advertisers to help "hook" kids more effectively. It's manipulation and deception of the worst kind, and on our most precious resource - our future generation. And speaking of resources, it's not just the hyperactive psychobabble that is filling up our childrens heads, it's all the Disney toys and Burger King trinkets that end up in landfills after one hour of use. And who has to deal with it? Our future generation!

  6. Namco/Sega = good/bad on Sega Cancels Merger With Sammy · · Score: 1

Namco and Sega have already colaberated on a number of projects, most notably those shooter games like Ninja Assault and Vampire Nights - I've owned them both but I can't remember if those are the titles :/

Anyhoo, the games are smokin, even if the replay value is limited. However, the one problem I see with a Namco/Sega merger is the competition between the Vitua Fighter series and the Tekken/Soul Blade series. This rivaly brought out the deepest, visually stunning video games in the entire industry (Squaresoft being an exception). That competition and one-upmanship will likely be gone, and everyone will suffer.

The whole Star Trek franchise is lame. So-called "aliens" from another universe look more normal than most high school kids these days.

My impressions of Redhat 8 were very positive, it's the most polished major distribution around. But what's the deal with all the latest 2.4 kernels? Hardly any of them compile properly, and most kernel libs aren't included in default package installs. As far as I'm concerned, kernel compiling is absolutely necessary and most users at least have a clue on how to do it.

Also, there should be more Linux distributions with different/yet still complete desktops other than KDE. Don't get me wrong, KDE rocks but what's wrong with having Enlightenment as the primary GUI? And as refined as Gnome is, I don't see it included very often.

Finally, why is there not a distribution optimised for gaming? Gentoo has a special UT version and Mandrake has a Sims version pre-configured with Winex, but is that it?!

The controller issue seems like an attempt to bring to the PC platform some of the uniformity that consoles have.

The console market has little in the way of uniformity. The video game industry at large is still underdeveloped, in the sence that there are many platforms and hardware architectures to choose from (not to mention controllers). It's only now that the consoles use the same media format - sortof - it was always a undecided mix of catridges, cards and cd's, depending and the company. Take for example Nintendo. They stuck with cartridges longer than everyone else because it was a major revenue stream and allowed them more control over quantity and quality.

  25. Worth Repeating on Linux to Become #2 on the Desktop? · · Score: 1

Linux is damn near there already, but I think the myriad of choices out there is confusing people.

I think the Linux movement at large should be concerned with having a filesystem hierarchy standard [linuxbase.org] and be working for more common implementations (ie: the Linux kernel and other utilities provided by the GNU Project are but a few). There is such a thing as too much choice. Even the two primary package manager formats (rpm and deb) could be unified with Alien [sourceforge.net], which could be intergrated in a Linux distribution. Linux has the installation [caldera.com] and GUI downpat IMO, but good multimedia/P2P programs are scarce, and even the ones that should work dependably don't (I just sent a bug report in to Real.com because RealPlayer 8 farted out on me). Collaboration on a few key projects might be the solution here.

Finally, when you install games - I have Quake III for Linux - I don't think I should have to spend hours finding the right drivers and libs just to run the damn thing in 640x480. I was looking for old Voodoo2 drivers (I'm broke so I need to work with what I got) and 95% percent of the sites which supposedly had it were no longer up-and-running. I guess when the tech bubble burst, alot of people gave up on the Linux movement (or so it would seem). So maybe the last point is there needs to be reliable and comprehensive resources on the net that newbies and seasoned /. geeks can rely on.

Linux deserves to be the defacto os, but it's going to take a coordinate effort to ever see this happen.
