I went to public school in Portland, OR in a community which has a pretty high rate of homeschooling - because of the high concentration of Mormons and 7th Day Adventists. Their parents enroll them in a variety of activities - sports, music, etc. so I'm able to interact with a number of them during the course of these same activities.
Most of the ones who socialized normally have since left the church after they turn 18. The rest were the typical home-school stereotype who had low socialization skills and low self esteem when placed in a group that is not composed of their peers - and I would have to say - out of a sample of around 100-200 kids of so that I've come to know - at least 60%-70% would fall into the latter category.
Hong Kong is much more expensive to live in than New York City. It hasn't been cheap in a long, long time. Even street food (without an actual restaurant and waiters) is not cheap anymore.
A normal middle class family would live in the outlying areas, in a 600 sq ft condo which costs around $500,000 USD.
I've worked in 2 different workplaces in Portland, OR (a city without an NFL franchise) and both buildings had hired a former NFL player (long retired) as low-paid security guards. Anecdote or not, these 2 data points extrapolate to a lot of former players out there who've used up their savings way too early.
Not quite the same. Those kids (and kids like them) use the laptop as they would an iPod - as an end user. To them, it's just a device that has buttons labeled "Fast, Faster, Fastest". It doesn't indicate any appreciation or interest in science or technology - they only care that it makes the car faster or it blows stuff up.
When WWII came around and Hitler and Mussolini invaded almost every country in Europe, he left little Switzerland alone because of this.
It's actually probably more because that's where the top brass of the Axis Powers stashed their personal war loot.
They also believed that it was just peachy to own people who's skin was darker than theirs.
No, they didn't. That's another liberal lie. Many of the Founding Fathers were against slavery, and it was strongly debated during the formation of the Union. They decided to compromise and allow the South to keep slavery so that they could keep them in the Union, because if they hadn't, they wouldn't have had a Union at all and wouldn't have been able to stand up against Britain.
You do realize the "Founding Fathers" weren't of one mind about everything, don't you? Anyone who has a clue about American history knows they were divided into two main camps, the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists.
While the Founding Fathers may have objected to slavery, it's inconclusive whether they did it for moral or pragmatic reasons. From your explanation and ones from others, it sounds like it may be the latter considering the cultural norms at the time. The north and south agreed on the Three-Fifths Compromise to, like you said, entice the south to stay in the Union and for the north to feel better about reducing the power of the south in the House.
So their previous governmental body was so bad that anything else would be an improvement.
I'm not so sure that "anarchy" is really the right term for what's going on over there. In the Western point of view, there's no UN-recognized, legitimate government. However, people over there aren't exactly living in anarchy - they're just ruled by whatever warlord or administrator happens to hold power in their particular geographic region. These rulers control the laws of regional commerce, defense, social services, etc. the same way that the Taliban does in rural Afghanistan. There are de facto leaders managing all this everyday stuff that runs in a society.
Good sushi restaurants ship a lot of their fish straight from Japan. In the age of refrigeration and airplanes, this is not a concern for good, reputable restaurants.
Living in Seattle, we apply the following formula with a 75%+ success rate:
if driver is in front, in the left lane and slow:
if car is a Nissan:
driver is probably from India
elif car is any other Japanese make:
driver is probably East Asian
elif car is large American-made SUV:
driver is probably from Eastern Washington (judging by dealer plate frames)
elif a box of Kleenex and furry stuffed animals is visible:
driver is probably East Asian female, or highly emasculated Asian male.
...and my friends, family, and I all agree that Asians (East Asians, SE Asians, S Asians) are all collectively pretty terrible. I've heard Middle Eastern guys are not too much better either.
Whether this is genetic is debatable, however. Many immigrants and their first/second-generation kids typically come from highly urban areas with very cheap and convenient mass transit, which decreases the number of car drivers (and hence, driving experience) in this demographic.
Half of my extended family are pharmacists, and I'm quite sure the money was a big motivating factor in their decision to become pharmacists. They, and many countless others like them, really hate their jobs despite the easy 6-figure paychecks (and oftentimes 5-figure signing bonuses). In retail, they say you only do 2 things all day long - answer the same questions about the same 3 drugs and be on hold with the insurance company rep. They all eventually took large pay cuts to work in a hospital setting, versus working in Walgreens where the good money is.
Very true. My wife handles loans for the not-quite-rich-but-thinks-they-are-rich crowd. It's just a non-stop stream of financial portfolios where people have $2,000,000 or more on paper but less than $50,000 in equity (and sometimes shockingly less). I'm sure individuals with certain political persuasions love to point out how these "small business owners" lost $1,950,000 in this recession.
The banking industry, especially above the lowly teller circles, is quite small within any given city. Any stink you make will follow you by word of mouth. Very effectively.
Anecdotes. Anecdotes.

And Argentina just recently started charging US passport holders $131 for entry, as reciprocity for the same treatment of Argentines entering the U.S.
That "money not lasting" part is definitely true.

It's a well-known fact that women are susceptible to an allergic reaction to gold and diamond. A typical symptom is excessive bloating.
You've already paid property taxes for the use (or un-use) of the public library.

It's even worse in places like Florida - a vast majority of "Asian" restaurants advertise sushi and Thai food on their front window.
Good sushi restaurants ship a lot of their fish straight from Japan. In the age of refrigeration and airplanes, this is not a concern for good, reputable restaurants.
There is an arbitrary file size limit to the XP zip - and there are no dialog boxes to inform you of this limit until your file is corrupted.

...and smacked into the face of the landing ramp...
Don't you mean a landing strip?
Nevermind. I only searched for keywords "carpet" and "drape" and didn't see that someone already hit it on the second comment.
...and yet not one comment questioning whether the artist will answer the "carpet match the drapes" question? I'm shocked with disappointment!

Unemployment benefits are taxed as income, hence taxes on taxes.
