Funny you should mention the mini. I'm using one right now as the PC portion of my car, albeit hidden in the trunk rather than in the dash. Aside from the decidedly odd voltage and connector it takes for power (19V, and the oddest connector I've ever seen) It's almost as if the unit was designed for mobile use.
Big Agriculture runs the corn lobby here in the states. I wouldn't worry. If algae gets profitable on a large scale, you can be sure that the same gigantic multinationals we all love to hate will be sure to get in on the action.
What exactly is tame about it though? It has the same region coding and software DRM that the 360 and PS3 have, and it lacks the movie DRM only by virtue of lacking movie playback capability.
For that matter, it could be argued that the only reason Nintendo as a corporation is significantly less evil at the momemnt is it's lack of market dominance.
I can't see how your last argument fits either. Aside from documents, both Sony and Microsoft are currently trying to push their respective consoles as a convenient platform specifically for movies, music, and software. As consoles become more powerful, and broadband becomes more wide spread, use of game consoles for msuic and movies entertainment will become more prevalent, not less. Personally, I'm not worried one bit about DRM, but if I were, I'd worry more about consumer electronics with DRM than I would about the state of DRM on the PC.
Dude, I'm not entirely sure where you're getting your information, but look up the history of nintendo and the 80's gaming market. The wii that you so casually dismiss as being non-evil is being produced by arguably one of the most classically evil examples of a software/hardware monopoly ever unleashed in the US.
Microsoft generally out markets, or simply outright purchases the competition. Nintendo made it a policy to crush them underfoot. I'm not saying that MS isn't evil at times in its own right, but the way Nintendo played ball in the late 80s make them look pretty clean in comparison.
First of all, depth charges are regulated munitions that are well beyond the purchasing capability of the average fisherman.
Secondly, a depth charge is overkill for this purpose. Commonly available dynamite will do the job just as well.
Thirdly, It's both inaccurate, and patently offensive to lump all anglers and hunters in with the poacher crowd. Yes, there are people who break the laws, and those folks should be punshed as severely as the law allows.
OTOH, there are legions of legal hunters and anglers in this country, whose purchases of the appropriate licenses, stamps, and permits, are often the primary or sole source of funds provided to the regulatory and enforcement bodies that strive to prevent the very illegal poaching we all find so loathsome.
I, and every other properly licensed resident fisherman in the state of Pennsylvania coughed up the 20 or so dollars for the fishing license. Some of them (not me, I was too busy this year!) paid again for a trout license. The hunters pay even more than we do!
I know that in PA at least, the angling community is often one of the first and most vocal opponents in preserving the quality of the water and fauna associated with our local watersheds. I've done the education and outreach programs. I've been wading through slime, muck, and worse than that in the Schuykill to get population counts, water samples, and sediment specimins. While I'm not a hunter personally, I've met with them, and i've seen the educational programs that they've implemented. Conservation. Gun Safety. Pollution control. Opposition to Eminent Domain. Open Space Preservation. Legal hunting and fishing have done at least as much for the preservation of the environment in this state as the large environmental lobby and interest groups. (No offense ment to you guys at Sierra or the like. Y'all do good work.)
What I'd like to ask the parent poster is, "What have YOU done to keep the wilds clean and wild?" And what gives you the right to assume that the rest of us are patently irresponsible?
A creepy old guy posting as a teenager is... well, creepy. But if he is *IS* in fact a dog posting to slashdot, it's impressive. Canine hackers are even more rare than teen females. So......pics or GTFO.:-)
Army of Darkness was screwed up? If that's how a bad HD-DVD looks, I can't wait to see some of the good ones. I picked this up since it was a hybrid disc, to use to compare my old setup, and my new setup. Visible differences using the 360 and 720p LCD TV.
Ummm... Exactly what sort of self respecting geek isn't willing or capable of either rolling his own machine, or locating a local OEM willing to sell one sans MS software?
I mean, sure, the "MS-Tax" argument holds some water for the average big-box store consumer, but for a slashdotter?!?
Bigger/more is always better. In the future (AKA lame-o business-speak's "going forward") we'll see porn featuring individuals with 5 24" penises penetrating multiple females that have car airbag-sized funbags.
>By the way - you did see the DOWs numbers lately haven't you? Job market compared to the dot-com crash days?
Bear in mind that the DOW is a bluechip index. These are stocks that people believe will be a good bet in the long term, EVEN WHEN THE REST OF THE MARKET IS TANKING.
While the DOW being up certainly isn't a bad thing on the whole, a DOW that's up can also indicate that people are shifting from other stocks, to the DOW because they fear the direction the market is taking.
In short, an "up" DOW can indicate either a strong market where everything is "up", or a weak market that's artificially bouying the DOW. I'm not a market expert (I leave that to my investment fund manager) so it's left as an exercise to the reader as to which of these situations is the reason for the DOW being up.
As for the job market here in the states, while it's not entirely the reason, bear in mind that there are a whole ton of jobs in the Katrina recovery.:-(
At a nonprofit recycler I volunteer at, I routinely install firefox on machines with as little as 128mb of ram. Most of the folks run into the processor or connection speed wall long before they can get to the point where firefox memory utilization becomes an issue. But in general we don't install the dozen or so extensions that slashdotters seem so fond of.
That said, your average user doesn't open 40+ tabs for a sesson. I'd be curious to see the statistics on tabs for your average slashdotter.
According to the alarm shop that did the work on my Camry, requirements for the clutch switch are LAW* here in PA. Honda didn't have a choice if they wanted to sell in PA. For similar concerns, check the cali emissions situation.
* This doesn't stop the 4x4 guys from upgrading thier starters, shorting past the switch, and then using said monster starters to pull themselves over patricularly nasty rocks. Clever folk, thos offroaders!
Clearly I was wrong. Blacks and whites are discriminated against in favor of Asians.
Speaking as an asian who gets discriminated against on a regular basis, it's been my experience that because I'm NOT black, noone is willing to take my discrimination cases seriously. Let me assure you, it's not all quiet on the 'eastern' front either. We just get a lot less attention for it.
Well not necessarily Zero Gravity. The L points are spots where the gravity exerted by the earth towards the earth, is equaled by gravity from another body. It's not that there's no gravity, but rather that there's no net force exerted, or felt.
The Laserjet 4 is notoriously reliable. It's well built, and capable of handling even heavy workloads for most small to medium sized workgroups.
It's consumables are reasonably cheap, and are manufactured by dozens of third parties. It's design is known well enough that an entire cult of printer repair enthusiasts has gone through and documented fixes for all the common problems. (http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/ Maintenance, while not a joy, is easy enough to perform.
It's old enough that any operating system vitage newer than 1990 should have drivers. Sales of the unit were phenomenal, so spares are cheap to get. (Or free if you keep your eyes peeled.) New spares are still available from HP.
Quality while not outstanding, is more than adequate for office usage.
About the only bad thing I can say about this printer is that it's plastic yellows far to easily, even when not exposed to UV or sunlight.
Ironically, the LaserJet 4's print engine isn't even made by HP. Canon is responsible for the guts of this thing.
I purchased the madcatz starter kit with my unit, and it came with a bunch of flexible UMD cases that I've found are quite good at keeping out the dust and grit.
Metal Gear Acid and Untold Legends have been alternating thier way in and out of a case in my pocket since launch date, and they both look fine without a spec of dust.
They don't add much to the thinkness of the UMD cart, and being madcatz, I imagine they're pretty cheap.

iTunes in a car?
Usb custom integrated into the dash (or center console, or driver side A-Pillar)?
Been there, done that.
These days, if you wanted to, you could use off-the-shelf components and get a working system. iTunes if you like, or even better packages.
You'd be AMAZED at what you can have if you're willing to cut up your interior and do a little fabrication.

Naah, You can buy em at the major retailers too. My last 3 players have all been region hackable, and I got all three of them at the local best buy,
At last! Another Pentax owner!
What are you using for a card, and how many shots can you take before the buffer fills?
As an istD owner and Pentax fan, I probably would have upgraded, but for the SD slot. (I've got a large investment in Compact Flash.)
Got any images up anywhere?
...but bear in mind that if NASA and ESA hadn't sent this probe there, there would not have been any raw data to process.
:-)
Thumbs up to the folks doing the processing, and thumbs up to Terragen for the great software, but big, big points to the folks who SEND THE PROBE.

YOu don't engineer hardware for linux, you silly gooose. You re-engineer linux for new hardware.
If it isn't supported at launch, someone will buy one and write support for it, and then we'll all be happy. That's how it's supposed to work, right?
