well.. I just did an install of OpenBSD 3.1 last night and the ports tree as well as the pre-compiled packages found on the openbsd.org ftp server includes both the DeCSS source and binary
so if 2600 can get in trouble for just linking to the code under the DMCA, i wonder what would happen to Theo for distributing it (along with all the openbsd mirrors there are out there)
yes this is mildly offtopic, but i found it interesting and worthy of being shared, if you disagree comment, dont' moderate
everyone else has pointed out why they are not available but they have no offered you any alternatives, personally i have found the ftp install from a floppy disk to be painless and there are many third parties who offer openbsd iso's.. just because they're not distributed by openbsd.org doesn't mean they don't work and theo's copyright is unenforced afiak (i've never heard of anyone getting sued or otherwise for using an iso)
i have bought several cd distributions and several t-shirts however, so don't blindly leech, i have been running an openbsd server for a couple years and i have to say it's almost *too* stable.. by the it breaks or needs upgrading i've usually forgotten how to go about doing that because it's so good you don' thave to fix shit all the time... its an excellent server, simple and elegant design, i highly reccomend trying it.
as for your isos ask on irc or look around, they probably won't be out immediately, but then if you have th ebandwidth to download the iso's you should be fine w/ an ftp install.. you don't really need the media for anything anyway, ports provides everything and the ftp install is actually faster since once you download the shit it's readily available rather than having to burn a cd and then install it..
you get cool stickers w/ the cd sets however, this alone has provided enough motivation for me in the past, the stickers are invaluable =)
a billion other people have already posted so you probably wont read this but
I was you 4 years ago
and I chose the non-college path
and let me tell you I wish I hadn't
long story and several certs later, I have MCSE/A+/Network+ and CompUSA won't even call me back for a shitty tech job fixing their piece of shit compaqs.. i'm going for a ccna shortly which might help, but in teh areas i've lived in (indy/cinci) the IT recession has hit hard.. i'm 22 and a 19 web dev friend of mine pulling $50k/yr w/o a degree (mcse/a+/net+) got fired several times becuase of budget cutting (and the fact he was the youngest)
i have been in and out of college several times and have a few hours, if i had the money i would go back immediately, a degree in *anything* is better than none at all
and you might want to reconsider IT as it continues to get worse ("outsourcing" all our jobs to "cut costs").. i know i have, i'm looking at degrees in other things entirely non-tech related becuase they are more stable..
having a huge salary is great, but only if you're around long enough to collect it
there are 2 reasons why this wouldn't work with IT people
1.) truck drivers are surly =) 2.) WE DONT HAVE A SINGLE GLOBALLY RECOGNIZED **UNION**
come on people where is OpenUnion.org
if teh majority of people are members of a union they will be able to get clout with employers who will actually have to listen instead of just firing people, otherwise they will lose *ALL* their IT people instead of just some, and luckily ther eare laws to protect our union already..
so.. where are the architects, i'm must a visionary (adn i'm sure i wasn't the first to think of it)
so what happens when seas are rough, according to the article it can take like 6 foot waves.. what happens with hurricane winds and 35 foot waves?
seems like they're spending an aweful lot of money to send some rich tourists off as guinea pigs during "peak season"
although they do look cool, like the ornithopters from Dune, if they were sturdy they seem in-expensive at $800,000 (although i could never afford one,e ven if i saved all my change for 3,000 years) considering a harrier is like a billion or so (ask Pepsi, they would know;))
"If there wasn't piracy there would be more software companies in Russia and Eastern Europe," he said.
"Instead Russia has become an enclave for pirated software and Microsoft has recently declared a five-month amnesty for Russian and Ukrainian internet cafes to switch to legally licensed software."
M$ grants amnesty? what a joke, dont' they knwo that the russian mafia runs russian interests now, if i were an inet cafe owner in russia
it's not like they have any enforcement power there anyway
i would be shocked if even ONE of them bought ONE "legal" copy
well.. i just put mdk 8.2 on my laptop, i bought hte 5.3 SuSE box set a while back.. i was impressed at the time until i found half the documentation in german, a fucked up hacked series of init scripts (rc.d and its ilk) and YaST which i utterly loathe.. it was quickly re-replaced with slackware at the time.. i'm sure they've come a way since then but old biases die hard;)
or the clod w/ a clumsy g/f (that would be me;)) nothing beats a Panasonic Toughbook, series of ruggedized notebooks, i have had dells and compaqs in the past, both of which were horribly mauled, covered with coke and had various parts of the casing broken or cracked including the lcd casing on the dell...
what i learned from all this and the absolute void of customer support at any major retailer was to buy a laptop that didn't break, sure it's a little slower and a little more expensive but my toughbook will last forever =).. it has gel packed harddrives, special stretch connecters inside, a magnesium lcd case and mine is just the executive version, there are militarized ones that cna take a.45 round.. mine can supposedly be dropped from 3 feet on concrete and still work.. while i haven't tested that much(and i live in a basement w/ a concrete floor;)) it has fallen at least that far onto hardwood w/o so much as a flicker on it's sexy screen
as for linux, i have mandrake 8.2 on there right now, usually it runs 2000 or XP but i decided i was bored a couple afternoons ago
anyway check out http://www.panasonic.com/toughbook for more info, yes ther eis flash.. sure it hurts but the specs are there in as well
i've been reading/. for years and i've yet to register for nyt solely becasue people usually paste the article text and registering for "free" content makes me feel ill
if that's the kind of shit it takes to be rich, beraking up w/ your g/f.. being underhanded and disgusting and getting married as a corporate publicity stunt (having already sold your soul to the redmond hive) then fuck that, i'll work at mcdonalds and keep my dignity;P
irony? as i read this the banner ad the top is for OSDN's GEOTARGETING (targeted advertising)
*cough* i wonder where they get/got the info *cough*

it would definitely suck to get into a bidding war with them either way..
