  3. make sure you'll actually get the funds on LAN Party at a High School? · · Score: 1

when i was still in highschool, stories from around the school district were floating about that school choirs and the like, who were wanting to charge a buck or 2 a person for a concert were not going to going to be able to keep any of that money as the football team had the rights to all tickets sold. the concert was to raise money for new bleechers, and its not like they were a club, it was a full blown class in school, and yet sports still got to cash in on it. they ended up just not having the concert.

  4. i was excited to get one on DS Launch Titles Officially Revealed · · Score: 1

until i saw some screen shots. anything in 3D at that resolution is going to look like ass, as is seen in the metroid prime: hunters screen shot. 320x240 (or whatever really small rez we can expect) never looked good for any first person shooter.

i thought the pictochat (i think thats right) was going to be cool too, but text entry is via an on screen keyboard, so entry will be slow and tedious.

i just dont think its going to end up being that great of a product. 2d games where a map, or stauts or the like are important will be greatly improved with the second screen, but thats about it.

if i were still in undergrad, i might be more tempted to get one for the sake of high tech note passing or what have you, but at the same time, my campus had wifi and using my laptop worked much better.

my girlfriend got me one for x-mas, and i love it. although it looks sorta stupid (and she was the first to admit it), its hella handy. its only about 75 bucks i think for 128mb, but shop around online.

the only thing that sorta sucks about it is, if you drop it, or tap it, or once in a while, look at it wrong while its playing mp3s, it turns off, and then give a low battery warning, but that could just be mine. i just take the battery out, and pop it back in, and all is well again.

  13. The worst thing for CS kids... on Internships in the Post-DotCom Era? · · Score: 1

Looking for a job or internship, at least in my area and possibly yours to is the "Business and Computer Information Systems" kids.

At my university the above quote is an actual major one can get through the business college. It is a relic of the dot-com boom. It is mostly business classes with some computer related electives. Obviously these BCIS kids take the easist electives and as such end up with massive GPAs, like 3.9, vs the kids who took the man's major, CS, and were proud to end up with a 3.4. Business kids learn all the terms and with the required communications classs, interview well. So in an interview they may sound inteligent, and the word 'computer' in their degree seems impressive enough. But its a total sham and a discrase to computer science and hardcore business students everywhere.

The moral of the story is not only are there slim pickins for internships but now you gotta compete with johny frat boy who knows nothing except maybe what ATM and some other acronims stand for but get him to use it in a sentince.

Prehaps doing what you enjoy isnt that great of an idea right now if what you enjoy is computer science. the world is goin to hell in a hand basket, and so is my karma.

  14. A wonderful idea on Quake II Mods for Engineering Students · · Score: 5, Interesting

making a map of something for a quake engine is a much better idea for a walk through than say QuickTime VR, and the guns and HUD are easily removed, so having a BFG while touring a possible building design isn't that big of a worry.

wasnt there a post here on /. about architects using off the shelf stuff and quake 3 for virtural walk throughs of buildings they've yet to build?

  17. high school programs are bullshit on First Red Hat Academy for High School · · Score: 3, Insightful

my highschool had 2 year Cisco program that started my junior year. I wanted to take it but had a class conflict. In the end it worked out for the best that i didn't take it because it was a 2 year waste of time.

the instructor was the auto teacher who went through a 6 week course to teach a 2 year program. Any time a student had a question, the teacher didn't have a clue. After 2 years, not a single student was able to pass the certification test, or even think it was worth it to try.

I got a part time job working the help desk at a local ISP/website development/network administration company my senior year. after working there for 4 months i knew more about router configurations than any of my friends in the 'holy' Cisco program. You can see why i feel highschool programs are bullshit now.

Applying this to the Red Hat situation, Unless red hat hired and is paying the instructor, its going to be some math teacher, or shop teacher who got a book and a boot camp and he/she will be lost and the kids' time would be better spent reading stuff off of the internet durning a study hall.

  18. between 1 and 2 on What's Your Earliest Memory? · · Score: 1

i've been told the story by my parents of how, when i was 1 or 2, i made a bridge between our couch and rocking chair out of a blanket, and how i tried to crawl across it only to fall to my doom and bust my face open on the end table. I dont remember ever constructing this bridge but i do remember vividly being in the emergency room, bright lights, people restraining me and eventualy covering my face with a cloth of some sort (like in ER or something where they cover up everything but the wound?). Its not like i remember when it happened exactly, it has no 'time stamp' to speak of in my mind, it exits though for whatever reason. beyond the memories i can remember in full are in preschool (3 or 4 years old).

while i was self aware and all that during that time, at age 6 or 7 i was playing at my god parents house, and all of a sudden, it was as if a different state of consciousness was atained. not like enlightenment, but i remember standing there and suddenly feeling strange and sort of disoriented. it all passed sort of quickly but i remember having alot of questions as far as current events and what not after that.
