The reason the PS3 isn't out yet is because it was delayed, not some grandiouse design. They screwed up the ps3 launch and it seems based on recent news stories that they keep screwing it up. Based on your comment I'd guess the Dreamcast is the best value because its ten years old and still being "milked" without a hardware upgrade.
If you look on the games section, Zonk has 3 stories about the PS3, two of them are positive about the console. But yes the PS3 has gotten some negative press lately, and not just here at/. It's not his fault that general reaction around the PS3 has been negative as hell lately. Not everyone has your fanboy-colored glasses on.
Personally I'll wait to see if the PS3 is going to have some decent games into buying-into the system as you seem to have already.
I don't know how you could have a problem with this story. If you happened to RTFA, and I'm doubting you did, it admits the Xbox is doing terribly in Japan and lists upcoming titles designed to appeal to Japanese gamers. NOWHERE does it imply or state that the 360 is doing well in Japan.
My only question is, is this anonymous post due to a blind hatred of all things Microsoft (regardless of how evil Sony is), or is it pure Sony Fanboyism?
Exactly. Every Xbox related thread turns into a blind Microsoft ranting thread. I find it funny that the/. community just turns a blind eye towards the anticompetitive practices of sony and kneejerks towards MS's gaming division instead.
Too bad this gaming site can't stay focused on games.
I attribute most linear gameplay to designers who are trying to be film directors. Why not allow the player to make an impact on the game world and the story?
Until designers stop trying to tell stories and allow the player to experience them instead we're going to keep getting crap like Enter the Matrix where the payoff is watching a short prerendered 3d film.
Mario does this, Link does this, Deus Ex, GTA3, KOTR, all have bland main characters. This is an old technique and I think I could keep naming characters indefinately that follow it.
I think this is explored in the book Game Over. They have a lot of great examples that are nintendo-focused on character development (or lack thereof).
Grand Theft Auto 3? The game rocks on PC, better than on the PS2. Yes the graphics reflect the original platform, but that doesn't in any way hobble the fantastic gameplay.
You can also look at Halo, the latest Mechwarrior game, and Splinter Cell as examples of multiple platform titles that succeed despite being "hobbled".
I also wager KOTOR will also succeed at multiple platform success. It would be difficult to mess that title up.
I'm sure that Ion Storm would prefer to build for one platform, but the increased sales potential of multiple platforms allows for a much bigger budget than would be possible in the dwindling PC/Windows game market, especially when so many FP games will be competing for customer dollars on that platform (HL2, Doom2, DX2, Max Payne 2).
Yes by all means, lets criticize Rare for not developing, testing, and releasing a blockbuster title for the Xbox in less than a year.
Rare has already proven itself to produce great games, so let's give them a little time to restructure and build a game before you start ranting. Good games take years, not 11 months.
I think the console world is just reliving the same sort of hype once surrounding PC online gaming. Only the problem is that consoles are even more difficult to get online than PC's are.
I'm sure each console can support a handful of online only games (an everquest type, maybe a Quake 3), but I think the majority of users are quite happy with single-player experiences. If I want to chat on the internet - I don't see why you wouldn't go to the PC first.
Oh Yeah, I'm sure it was a big blunder to get out of Atari when the getting is good and start a small restaurant chain that hit just as big: Chuck E Cheese. He sold that too for a profit. You're definately right though, he should have stuck it out at atari so he could experience the gaming crash of the 80s.
I think that the article is interesting in that it opens the hypocracy that is violence and videogames. Why shouldn't rape be alright if murder is acceptable?
The arcade culture has been on a steep decline since the NES arrived. Saying that they're dying is an understatement of epic proportions. Arcades are dead. Joystick Nation does a good job talking about the death of the arcade. They attribute the begin of the fall to Skee-ball machines.
He's kind of missing the point though, since the new arcade is the home console, not online gaming.
I have to back up curmudgeon on this one. The Max Payne developers made this a serious attempt at noir and not a parody. This isn't NOLF!
Look at the box art, I think what we have with Max Payne is an attempt to churn out noir from developers who speak English as a Second Language. Which is why they didn't think twice of putting dialogue like this out:Outside, the mercury was falling fast. It was colder than the devil's heart, raining ice pitchforks as if the heavens were ready to fall.
One reason why Trek is taking is because the writers are afraid to take chances with the characters. Since the TNG movies began - the crew of the enterprise has been stagnant. Nobody's been introduced, nobody has died, nobody's even been promoted (until this outing).
Why should I care about the the latest "danger" if I know they'll just hit the reset button at the end of the movie? They couldn't even kill off a main character this time without making up some horribly improbable way to bring him back from the dead.
What an off-kilter list! First of all, Diablo was nothing more than a straight dungeon crawl, believe it.
Secondly, they negate all the arcade classics... Spyhunter, pacman, Pong! Where the hell are these "influential games?" Every single one of these earlier games did a lot more influencing than these new-age brethren.
And QUake is nothing more than an extension of doom, incorporating both is both lazy and idiotic. By the way, they missed all Sid Meier games, Rise of the Triad, Duke 3D, and Solitaire
If you'd would read the article you'd see they are sticking with the 10 million by 2006 goal.

I hate to break it to you, but there already are robotic musicians. The County Bear Jamboree. Those robots have been pickin and a grinnin for years!

Deus Ex 2 made me cry when I realized how buggy and substandard it was. :)

You're Okay Computer!!
They're going to have backwords capability with the release. HOpefully we'll know for sure by E3.

Didn't they use the new Unreal engine for the game? I'd hardly qualify that as a "bad engine" just poor implementation.

Not exactly true. The Sims have sold 19 million copies so far - which may outdistance the installed userbase of the PS2.

He calls it a "transcript" of the interview, and the linked story also mentions that they only got a 15 minute phone call.
It was a telephone interview. Read the intro.
