  3. I offer my congratulations on Boeing Successfully Launches Mammoth Delta-4 Heavy · · Score: 1

I know this kind of event is not as sexy and media-worthy as the Scaled Composities flight, but IMO if it wasn't for NACA/NASA (as flawed as it is) and their supporting contractors, SC would not have had the base of knowledge to work from to have their flight be a success. So I offer my congratulations to the people who tackled the inherent technological and engineering challenges and made this test flight possible.

(BTW how does the D4H compare to the Energia? I read a while back the Energia was more powerful than any current American booster but was still not as powerful as the Saturn 5.)

  4. Re:I am an student from China on China Bans Game Recognizing Taiwan Independence · · Score: 1

I'd much rather keep my country whole vs. hacked apart. It's much better to acknowledge and embrace cultural differences.

That's the difference beween China/Taiwan and Canada/Quebec. The rest of Canada and Quebec and talk about this like a pair of rational groups of people. Unfortunately, China is NOT a rational partner in this equation with Taiwan IMO. They seem to be sabre-rattling even at the slighest whisper of "splittism"; they don't want to hear what the Taiwanese really want.

So what about the Taiwanese? Who will listen to them? Will anyone even consider their wishes? This is not a one-way street. Yes, the Mainlanders want to retain China because of national pride; the Mainlanders ought to keep in mind the Taiwanese will give their accedence to be part of China if it was not ruled by a small, iron-fisted group of oligarchs.

Disclaimer: I'm a Taiwanese native of Chinese descent living on the American East Coast.

  5. Government subsidy? on Report: Broadband In US Homes Nearly 20 Percent · · Score: 2, Interesting

My first thought was that maybe the gubmint should do too broadband what they did with the home phone market. There are two issues with broadband to the home:

    - it's still to expensive (my Comcast connection is still ~$45/mo, but my wife will only give that up over her dead body)
    - some areas are still too remote (my in-laws can only get bidirectional satellite service)

Could the gubmint make providers charge business more to subsidize rollout and support of the full cost of service for residential users? Or are there other issues that don't apply to POTS?

That said, giving broadband to Joe Sixpack may not be all that great of an idea... Just imagine the field day phishers/worms/other nasties out there will have with unwary users with those big pipes. If casual home users (with no immediate relatives who know how to support PCs) want to get this service, they ought to be made to take a quick course and a test to make sure they know how to protect themselves.

  7. Energy storage on Could Nuclear Power Wean the U.S. From Oil? · · Score: 1

IMO the core issue here may not be energy production; it's energy storage. Hydrocarbon-based fuels hold more energy than any other form of medium that we know of (eg lightweight batteries, hydrogen, ethanol (does that count as a hydrocarbon?)). All those mediums could be regenerated by adding energy to the end products, but they have limitations. They are either tricky to handle or don't hold enough energy. And up to this point, we don't have the ability to put energy into a system to generate hydrocarbon fuels easily. (And really those fuels are just mediums containing solar energy from long ago.)

However there is the possibility of at least generating CH4 via inorganic means. It's possible to take CO/CO2 from the atmosphere and generate CH4 from an industrial process; all of this could be powered via solar/hydro power. It would seem that if this was feasible, CH4 could be designated as a renewable fuel. Maybe vast amounts of CH4 could spur the faster adoption of fuel-celled cars... Maybe Halliburton and the Sierra Club may end up in a giant group hug over this... Maybe...

No... I think the American people lost. Alot of them just don't know it. IMHO Bush has been a horrible president. I'm not going to spell out the reasons; I'm sure it's been rehashed a zillion times in this forum. OTOH, Kerry didn't inspire. Sure he was a brave guy and stuff, but he didn't pick a couple of core issues and pound them to death ala flip-flopping. Personally I voted out of dread of and vile for Bush Jr rather than really liking Kerry. I guess that's less than enough reason to vote for him for some people...

  9. Another item to note on Kerry Concedes Election To Bush · · Score: 1

Despite all the money and effort to bring out the 18-29 yo vote, only 17% of them turned out to do so. Why can they not be inspired to do their civic duty while a large group of evangelical lemmings did theirs??? If Karl Rove (that shill) could conjure up a strategy to make that group come out in droves by emphasizing on issues important to them (ie cultural issues), then someone else ought to go and figure out what is important to them.

I remember listing to a recent story about a youth voter registration drive on NPR and one college girl described the process as akin to her parents nagging her to do something. Some of these people don't realize they CAN make a difference. The mistake is that a candidate didn't float any credible balloons of issues younger voters feel they can make a difference on.

(I guess many of my fellow citizens want to vote for someone who is just like them... *sigh*)
