A ticket to a game is minimum $50. Tack on gas and parking and food/drinks, and you are up to $80 per game to watch... and broadcasts in HD are actually better than those minimum price tickets because the cameras are closer. My HDTV cost $400; DirecTV is $700/year with the HD NFL package + $200 for the box, while one could cheap out with cable (no NFL package) and spend $500/year for HD DVR (no box cost). I watch on average two games per week in HD (which is better than being at the game if you don't have good seats), so I'd have to shell out $1600/year just for tickets and extras... and that is if there is a stadium in my city, which there isn't.

It's also nice to leave my house and drive 15 minutes to the beach for some surfing or volleyball when the games are done. It's kind of hard to do that when you are spending an hour getting out of the parking lot at the stadium.

Try this: go buy any of the 457 off-brand nvidia video cards out there. It's easy for an OEM ATI card to work perfectly when it is OEM! I might be mistaken, but I think you can ONLY buy a Mac edition of a video card and have it actually work... and there are three Mac ATI cards versus nine for PC. Of those three, two are G5 ONLY; if you have a G4 you only have one choice for an ATI video card. Yes, that is great hardware support.

Oh, and btw, have fun buying a retail Nvidia card. You can't. You can buy the 6800GT from Apple, and that is about it (unless you want a geforce MX).

Here's the deal: Nvidia gives Apple the driver source code and Apple makes the driver. For one single card. They focus their energy to create a stable driver for one card. A hardware driver is NOT a hardware driver like you think. Many, many hours are spent trying to make a driver work acceptibly with the widest range of weird PC configs out there. And ATI can't make a stable driver for Windows... it will run fine on my PC and blue screen on another just like for no real reason. If they had a smaller and completely known set of configs, the driver would be more stable and more powerful.

You might be correct that OSX is technically and usably superior to Windows... I've never spent more than a few minutes on OSX so can't really remark. I do know that, contrary to what a non-hardware-driver-codewriter like you thinks, it is a lot easier to make a stable driver for a closed system like a Mac.

Jamming my fingers together on a keyboard and trying to hit keys? You must have either a) very large fingers, or b) a very small keyboard. My fingers naturally fall on ASDF with my thumb perfectly resting on the space bar. There is no cramming, and this is the natural at rest position of my hand. I think having 5 fingers perform 7 functions with the keyboard and 3 fingers performing 4 with the mouse is much more natural than 2 thumbs and 2 index fingers doing all the same stuff. Each finger has to do twice the work when using a controller.

Think about it. Most games are setup on a console with the thumb buttons for jumping picking up weapons and such... that same thumb is also setup for aiming. How does one aim and jump at the same time? Even if you setup your controller a little differently, there will still be a time when you can't hit certain buttons at the same time when you need to. I absolutely guarantee that if you put the top PC Halo players with a kb+m playing against the top console Halo players with a controller, the PC guys would wipe the floor with them. I've played both extensively, and, aside from wacky PC keyboard-like, gaming specific interfaces, nothing can beat a kb+m for FPS games.

That said, the controller is definitely better for other types of games. Third person games like Splinter Cell are very good with a controller (though I haven't spent much time trying it on a PC with a kb+m). Racing games can only be played well with a controller or a wheel... trying those on a keyboard is very, very tough (analog mouse movements for accel and brake are required for accurate control and those can only be done on the mouse, which doesn't work so well).

It's also funny you mentioned the Strategic Commander for FPS games, since it was designed for strategy games and wouldn't work very well at all (from the reviews I read) for FPS gaming... they do have the Dual Strike for FPS games, but although it is an interesting take on aiming, I'm not sure how well it would work. The reviews I read of the strategic commander also said the buttons were too close together, and he felt he had to jam his fingers to hit them.

Hell, Sony is both a hardware and content producer, so they'd really want to lock out the analog hole.

Toshiba locking out older HDTVs and Microsoft saying the next Windows will suck balls for playing media on current monitors (do you even know anyone with a monitor supporting HDMI? I don't, and I have a newer LCD) are both trends in the market that aren't going away. Sony will probably step right in line.

My hope right now is that the consumers will be so jaded that no new technology works with the expensive stuff they just bought the past two years and have no guarantee the format they buy will be around next year that they just refuse to support EITHER format and refuse to upgrade to the new Windows.
