I worked around some mainframe programmers for several years at a major bank, and they strike me as being much more like older Unix geeks than anything else, with some important differences:
They're probably much more politically conservative
They may wear much more conservative clothing, incl. stuff like neckties, but it'll still be grubby and ill-fitting
They probably drive a midsize, American sedan like a Ford or GM product
They generally have poor health habits, but lean more towards the old fashioned vices like coffee (from the office coffeemaker, not Starbucks) and cigarettes - diet is also poor
They obsess over uptime and reliability way more than Windows or even Unix geeks
They most likely don't have the typical geek interests like Star Trek, computer games or reading Slashdot:)
But I bet you'll notice a core psychology that's pretty familiar to most geeks...
I'm all for this. The otherwise rather poor quality Dell that I use at work has a gorgeous 125 dpi screen. Bright, decent colors, etc...
So when is Apple gonna upgrade the dim, washed-out, and kinda "soft" looking LCDs on the iBooks and 12" Powerbooks ? Hell, it's an embarrassment - esp. in comparison to even some cheap, crappy Dell...
At least some of the minis do have 5400 rpm drives. A "take apart" article on the mini I read recently had the author identifying the hard drive as a Toshiba model which runs at that speed.
A posting on MacWorld's forum on the Mini has an entry from someone who took their's apart and discovered a 5400 rpm drive instead of the 4200 rpm part. (not to say all of them come this way)
Indeed. Check out what the folks at the Apple booth told Henry Norr over on the MacInTouch website. Take home message was "doing it yourself does not void the warranty unless you damage something."
Great googly-moogly, I read that screed of his on the nauvoo.com site and was almost physically sick. I can't believe I have this bigoted, religious wingnut's stuff on my shelves. Every one of them's going in the trash tomorrow.
Dammit! I can't believe I actually supported this jerk by buying his books...
There are color-matched components available at places like Directron. For instance, at Directron they have links to all their components in both black and silver right on the front page - DVD and CR-RW drives, stick on bezels for beige drives, both LCD & CRT monitors, all sorts of stuff:)
half the performance at twice the price
Well, half the MHz at twice the price is closer to the truth - but that's fairly meaningless. Repeat after me, children, "MHz does not equal performance."
Over 15 years ago, I went to a good friend who is an electrical engineer for advice on what computer I should buy. His response is still valid today, "Well, what do you want to do with it ?"
Larry might be a bit offended at that, seeing as how he's a Christian himself ;)
Wow, shades of Roujin Z Just hope it doesn't develop a mind of its own... ;)

Garbage. OS X has supported multi-button mice from the get go. Buy a USB mouse with as many buttons as you'd like and plug it in.

Talking boobs ?! Wow, I'd pay money to see that! ;)
Robert A. Heinlein - anything. Yes, I even like his later works (e.g. Number of the Beast) that seem to annoy so many other folks :)
John Varley - anything. His latest, Red Thunder, was outstanding.
Frank Herbert, Dune. I find the subsequent Dune novels rather tedious, but the first one is fantastic.
Roger Zelazny - anything.
Alan Dean Foster - his novels of the "Humanx Commonwealth," especially the ones with his character Flinx.
Orson Scott Card - anything.
Here's my Listmania List on Amazon.com to get you started.
Uh, OK. david.huff@verizon.net
OK, I'll bite: david.huff@verizon.net
And on breast bounce.
;)
And your problem with this is.... ??
Bits ?! You youngsters and your 1's and 0's. Back in my day we just had 0's, and we liked it that way...
EMACS is an acronym for one of its normal key sequences, yes ? ESC-Meta-ALT-CTRL-Shift ? ;->
Someone please mod this +1 Funny (or Insightful, if you'd rather).
I'm so sick of the "War is cool, sex is bad" meme...
I was wondering if this difference in LCD quality was still the case with the new iBooks. A crappy, dim LCD would be a deal-breaker for me...
Well, the Sun does have boobies
;)
You say that like it was a bad thing...
For natural wonders, it's hard to beat Grand Canyon National Park. And while you're in Arizona/New Mexico, check out one of the ancient Anasazi Indian sites like the Chaco Culture National Historical Park in Nageezi, NM or Mesa Verde National Park between Cortez and Mancos, CO. For a technically geeky side trip, you could visit the National Radio Astronomy Observatory Very Large Array about 50 miles west of Socorro, NM.
The case they used seems to be a Morex Cubid 2688R, thus the 1980's VCR look ;) However, this page of Mini-ITX compatible cases has several more attractive designs...
Does anyone know of any good solutions to Linux on Sparc?
Sure, have a look at the Debian SPARC Port. Have a co-worker who runs it on a Sunblade at his desk - works great.

Even InfoWorld, certainly no Apple shill, likes the iBook. See A grand well spent.
