  1. Cultural bias and other stuff on Self-Censoring 'Chinese Wikipedia' Launched · · Score: 4, Insightful

I notice that articles about China seem to bring a certain number of posts about how we in the west shouldn't be arrogant and assume, that just because we value freedom of speech and such rights, the chinese people want the same freedoms. And of course there ARE cultural differences between East and West. But I also have to wonder...if the chinese people are so content with the pace of change in society, then why does the government need all those citizen censors, and great firewalls, and controlled wikis? It would seem that there would be no need for such stringent methods of control when the people don't want western ideas.

Not overcrowded at all:) That's pretty much my reasoning; the existing servers are weighted overwhelmingly towards the 65+ side, and starting out a new character means a solo existence for most of the time. Since I would rather play as part of a well populated world, this new server sounds pretty nice. I dropped the game about 2 years ago and only recently started to look into going back. As for being "threatened or intimidated" , nope, I'm not....but thanks for the free psychoanalysis of my post :)

  11. I'll be going for nostalgia on Forthcoming MMORPGs · · Score: 1

I'll re-up with Everquest when they get the new 'progressive' server up. It'll start with just the original EQ world, and (hopefully slowly) add in the expansions over time. I'd rather bash moss snakes in cloth armor than go through the twinkfest that EQ has become now.

I have a similar situation here; I have been getting frustrated and bored on WoW. I'm getting excited about the new server being talked about on Everquest, though. Sounds like it will start out with just the original world, then move through the expansions as certain mobs are killed. So I'll be giving SOE my money again and clubbing polar bears and spiders in Everfrost:)

What would have made more sense would have been to start and guild, make it clear during recruiting that such language would not be tolerated, and go about one's business.

Isn't that pretty much what they did? By stating the guild was GLBT friendly, they were letting prospective recruits know that insulting language like that wouldn't be acceptable. I think Blizzard just had a CR person shoot from the hip, and hopefully it will all be sorted out. The official policies say that insulting language is against the terms of service, and I don't see how advertising a GLBT fiendly guild can possibly be seen as insulting, any more than advertising a guild for people on East Coast (U.S.) time is insulting to someone in Europe.
