fox continually moved the show from one time-slot to another while airing episodes out of sequence, killing the dramatic tension that several moments ought to have had. and viewers can't watch a show if they don't know when it's on.

viewing the episodes now in the sequence intended by joss whedon makes that point eloquently, IMHO.

a fair point, to be sure. although the article's author clearly feels that the basis for such a law exists in moore's paper, the fact of the matter is that i'm pretty certain engineers working on batteries are keenly aware of the need to develop more efficient batteries, capable of holding a charge longer, while ideally not becoming too hot to avoid "scorched lap" syndrome. further, i'm similarly certain that if such an observable principle actually existed that some reasonably perceptive engineer would have picked up on it and written his or her own dissertation along those lines.

we may need such a law, but at best, right now, it's just a bill.

while that's funny, it's also insightful. but remember that at the same time, if they don't raise awareness then they're failing to build a market. besides, it's essentially the same problem all software publishers face: how do you convince customers to buy the new version?

AV designers don't have many choices: they can talk about more features, but most of us don't want a more feature-rich AV app: so long as it can phone home to update its database of bad guys, i suspect the vast majority of users don't really care.

my question though: how often does joe sixpack buy AV software? do they actually buy anything themselves, or do they rely on their retailers (dell or whoever) to bundle it on their windows boxen?

however, my question: let's say dell's call center starts using this. if this fact becomes known, everyone will simply abuse it (a la all the tourette's comments), thereby doing nothing at all to improve the customer call experience.

so you would have to deploy it in stealth mode, basically: nobody would know.

also, something that bugs me personally: this system rewards the short-attention span, short-fused sorts, not the calm, patient callers. is anybody seeing this as a good trend?
