x.odd versions are the development versions inbetween. while 2.6 is current, towards the end of its life, Linus or whoeever will create a development 2.7 kernel. Once thats finalised, it'll be released as 2.8.x
Think of the odd versions as release candidates, if youre from a Windows world!:)
I can only assume you mean DAC's? Where a cable is split into effectively 2 seperate lines (limiting your modem dialup to 28k, no matter what)
Yes, they use it a lot here, but I dont think its an exchange limitation (generally anyway) - it seems to be more of a local box/cabling thing.. when we had an extra 3 lines put in the engineer said if we got 1 more, BT would have to upgrade the cable from the exchange to the subbox, then to our house! He also mumbled something about that probably helping them justify updating the exchange to DSL as well, but being students at the time, we couldnt afford the "chance" of DSL for the cost of another line:(
i dont see how it cant be - if you had fc1 (kernel 2.4) installed, then upgraded everything to 2.6, you've gone around the issue. it seemingly only shows up when installing FC2
"I want to give it a try" comes up with "send us your name and address and we'll send you a CD!"
How about whats on this CD, a more useful (other than the little thats in the FAQ's) list of links on where to stay/get up to date with your software, etcetc?
LSASS is the whole authentication subsystem in Windows - without it, its, well, Windows:)
Seriously though, this is the system that sets and maintains the execution levels (SYSTEM, UserX, Guest, Admin, etc) so is a very very important one.
The reason the system reboots when being hit by this worm is that the worm causes the exe to exit, which the services system then has "Reboot on failure" set for. System restarts, gets hit again, round and round the mulberry bush we go!
And its interesting that its a user specified thing.. that pretty much makes all the rants on this topic pointless!?!
Although I guess it could be argued that its possible for data to be left behind, lurking on a hidden HD partition, or left on a flash chip on the mobo when you sell/junk them?
how does the BIOS know where to look for the data? I dont keep it in the standard place.. How does this BIOS read NTFS? I thought MS hadnt licensed that tech.. How does the BIOS get around NTFS's ACL's? Isnt that against the DMCA?!
"A calibration code is what makes that part work, and that's the part that's proprietary," Territo said.
"It's like the difference between an Apple microprocessor and an IBM microprocessor.
if you have spare hardware, why not setup a Smoothwall or IPCop box in front of her machine to use as the firewall and dialler? That way her machine looks like its always connected, no dialling on her behalf needed
As for MAKING her use it, well, cant help you there:)

I can see it happening.. pilot zooming along normally, *clunk*, "YOU STUP*&(^&%?%*&..", regains control, lands, adjusts tie, steps out.
Sounds realistic to me!

gah, now you're encouraging the "politically correct" brigade to jump onboard!

It seems the only real route at present is linux compatability lists, coupled with Windows Refunds
Its a shame, but it seems the big manufacturers just dont see the market for linux laptops.
Plus only recently has it been decreed that MS can no longer hold things back from manufacturers who ship bare systems.
i like all this, it harks of those films where somewhat clueless rich guys go on random expeditions..
:)
think monty python and the cross eyed expeditionist who wants to climb the two peaks of everest
They just need to add a few features, like AI, face/voice recognition, etc :)
I can see it now, 2007 a company unveils their new building and internet security system, Sky.Net!
Sounds like someones been playing K240 a bit too much :)
"All that would be required is an ionic ramjet.."
Yeah, we just gotta invent (a decent version of) that first!
mm, yeah, forgot that MS ACL's are worthless :)

What does MS have to say about all of this?
why should it missing stop you? :)
Someone needs to let them in on a little IBM/Apple secret
