Here is a snip of the text: "Class Members have the right to return to the Claims Administrator one copy of each DVD title manufactured by or on behalf of MGM which was created for a film shot in the aspect ratio of 1.85 to 1 or 1.66 to 1 ("Eligible DVD") for either (1) a new MGM DVD from a list of 325 titles or (2) a cash refund of $7.10."
This 'new DVD' phrase does not convince me that I will be getting a PROPER copy of the movie I have, but rather that I will be able to select a DVD that they have selected as a worthy trade (possibly one that has not been screwed with)
AND, I cant get the DVD anyway. I'll have to start a class action against MGM Canada for that.
Would there not be a desire for Indian startups to replace the outsourcing to US comapnies, with cheaper Indian or Malayasin people? I'm sure there is an indian computer manufacture that can make a PC to run Windows, and replace Compaq in this place. Or, better yet, run Linux.
This counter-outsourcing just seems like a slowing of the bleeding.
Agreed. When the almighty buck is most important, companies will find a way to get around all barriers. It shocks me that Dell is moving the operation back to the US, instead of dealing with the issue, and hiring language coaches (and no I dont want these jobs to leave the North America to begin with). 10 to 1 says they move back with 5 years.
Parents, once you're past making the huge mistake of actually letting the kids have computers in their rooms, what's a reasonable set of guidlines?
WHAT?
Grow a set of balls, man! Who is incharge of your house, you ar the kids? Lay down your rules! And if they break them ONCE, take the computers and sell them?
I see that you feel that Linux is not ready for the desktop. In that light, what key events need to take place in your mind for Linux to be considered to be 'ready' for the desktop. Key business alliences (a la Novell/SuSE)? Key settlements in a certain IP lawsuit (SCO)? Other milestones? Please give insite into WHY you feel its not ready for prime time.
AND, if its NOT ready for the desktop, what will you run on YOUR desktop?
Would this app (which it seems is only for that Ericsson phone) be that much more a killer app if it were done in J2ME and be available on MANY different platforms? Or is that possible given the J2ME graphics library? Surely the SSH client would be doable.
....ask the customer what his budget is? would this not solve the problem? Or is it a better idea to assume that a customer will have NO idea what the system will cost?
I doubt you will ever see Apple sell the OS X for any other platform. Thats the genius of Apple's business model; Want the OS? Gotta but the hardware (which is not cheap). They got it right. Let just hope Microsoft doesnt try this.
The m130 actually supports 4,096 colors typical of a 12-bit screen. But by using blending techniques, the company can display 58,621 "color combinations -- approximately 11 percent fewer color combinations than we had originally believed" on the m130 handheld, said Palm spokeswoman Marlene Somsak.
Plaintiffs in the suit include such major labels as UMG Recordings, a unit of Vivendi Universal, Sony Music Entertainment, a unit of Sony Corp ( news - web sites).; The RCA Records Label, a unit of Bertelsmann AG ( news - web sites)'s BMG; and Warner Brothers Records, a unit of AOL Time Warner.
It seems that it is easy to avoid getting caught is the lawsuit (as AOL has). AT&T should keep an eye on Vivendi Universal's stock (which has started slipping)
We have all these trade agreements to help unify the global marketplace, opened up our borders to allow the freemovement of our people, and soon we'll have a common currency world wide. Its time to get with reality that there is no unique culture anymore, but an American-centric Global culture. Making a second internet is not gonna stop it.
What with all this legal rambling the RIAA/MPAA is doing, they are both missing the point completely. Any laws set up un the US will (for the most part) only have effect in the US. What about the rest of the world? Are they gonna care about the royalties of the RIAA, or weather or not is legal to tradde movies over the internet? No. These organizations (or rather the companies they represent) should stop worring about such small potatos and fix a failing business model
The Internet; it will change your life (for better or worse)
No. I dont think that they can. Remember that the final output of the content will be analog; outputting to a digital out would be useless. The output on the set-top would only be usefull if the content was digital as well (like MPEG 2). This MIGHT be possible on satellite, since their source is MPEG-2.
Digital TV will only be available in the US by 2006!? Almost every cable company offers digital TV here in Canada, and it's not too much more expensive that regular cable (the difference being the cost of the set-top box).
These are not the same thing. Your refering to Digital Cable - a digital way to multiplex analog TV signals to gaurentee clearity while allowing the Cable company (Rogers, Cogeco) stuff more channels down the pipe (and compete w/ satellite). That set-top box converts that channel you select back to analog (which is why you cant use the tuner on the TV
Digialt TV means all channels are NOT digital versions of analog content. It is fully DIGITAL content, encoded in some format (MPEG-7?) and decoded by YOUR TV. This means you can record the digital stream on to a HD (technology permitting).
More of these kind of 'stunts' should be done at gatherings where it seems more at home (H2k2, Defcon,..)and more of these gatherings should be held in CANADA (or other places out of the reach of the DMCA).
AOL had better watch out that a standard comes along that they are to late in supporting. Sure other IM systems can interoperate with them, but who will want to use their product if it cant interoperate with others?

Imagine this at 150km/h:
"Sorry, your car has performed an illegal operation and must shut-down. Please hit 'Horn-signal_left-lights' to continue"
Sounds like your looking for a solution like the one Cringely recently found in Canada
....you insensitive clod!! :-)
Here is Canada, owning a gun is a privlidge, not a right (just like driving)
In the US, owning a gun is a right, which cant (easily) be removed. Note: Driving is still a privlidge in the US

Belarc offers a free PC audit tool that I have found VERY useful in trying to discover exactly what h/w and s/w a user has installed. And it free.

Damn right! There should be a few new sections made. One called 'work' and another called 'RIAA'...

This should explain that. From Wired:
