Interesting how the BBC and now the FT puts publishes articles on Open Source and Linux's increasing popularity. Are they going for the Slashdot hits I wonder?
Man, this site is slow! Anybody would think it was made with Java.... just kidding.... I use Java all the time and I love it! It's great to see it improving all the time and being used for a whole host of different applications.
I've been looking at developing Java based web solutions on legacy systems lately and it seems that IBM have a pretty good JDBC driver for OS/400 and I assume they have an equally good one for OS/2.
A couple of years ago it was all the rage to install a Linux partition on AS/400s turn it into a webserver and web-enable legacy systems that way, but now it seems IBM are pushing their own native system ie WebSphere, eliminating the need to install Linux. To be honest although I'm happy that I can develop native web apps on these platforms it 's always nice to be able to use the latest open source technologies and not be restricted to using WebSphere. Especially if you have to pay for it.
Personally I thought one of the failings of OS/2 was the user interface but using it as a webserver platform makes sense I suppose, if your company uses it anyway.
I would say if it works don't mock it. Just suppose there was a leader in a country somewhere that controlled 95% of the media. You create a groovey little game slagging him off put in on the net, it becomes virally successful people get drawn to a site where you can openly put your opinion forward.
Italy, Germany and Japan are hotspots??? errrrm, I'm living in Italy at the moment. Please tell me why it's a hotspot, seriously, come on I want to know.
Right, enough of this all Flash sites are crap bollocks. Flash is just the medium. I'm not saying that Flash is perfect for all sites but consider:
(1) Flash is vector based so in theory should look the same on all devices/browsers with a working plug-in.
(2) Flash is vector based so you can stretch it to fit any size screen.
(3) Flash is vector based so it can actually take up less bandwith than some HTML sites to represent the same information.
(4) Flash is vector based so in theory you should be able to print exactly what you see on the screen.
I'm not saying Flash is the be all and end all. Personally I'm looking forward to using SVG with Java on the server but I would have thought that the/. crowd would be into something you could write once and run anywhere.
I reckon Asteroids was decades ahead of it's time;)
I was working in Italy for 6 months this year and I really missed my Channel 4, (if I could only choose one channel that would be it). Does anybody know if it's possible to get Channel 4 in Italy (I'm willing to pay!)?
I would implement a web-based solution if possible. But if you're into client-side code why not use Kylix, I know it's based on Object Pascal but that's not neccessarily a bad thing!(Version 2 is out now I believe.)
It may be just me or my setup but I've noticed at least one massive bug in IE6 - intermitently - it really screws up when trying to handle animated gifs. The gifs go too fast and flicker and the screen flashes when rolling over rollover images. Has anyone else noticed this? I'm running it on NT 4 with sp 6 installed. I've not got round to installing it on another system so I may just have a weird setup.
I love those old simple games, especially the two player ones. I remember writing a simple 'tron-cycle-type-game' for the Amiga while I was at college, it kept me and my flatmates amused for hours. Much more fun than Lemmings or whatever was about at the time, mainly because you were competing directly with another person and what's more he was in the same room, in fact on the same keyboard, so you got the added motivation of hearing him curse you when you kicked his arse!
What about the rest of the world, Europe for example? Why can't these things happen globally? Are we really that different? It's bad enough having to wait an extra 6 months for your PS2 and now this.
shoot some worms!
"...but somehow, being a British company, managed to cock it up. Bloody
typical." Is this generally thought to be a truism or just another
myth? Why is it that the UK has a great reputation for innovating yet such a
poor one for making any money at it?
But isn't plugging in your iPod straight into a TV just a little easier?
... in Italy!
Probably the worst television programs I've ever had the misfortune to watch - let alone re-watch!
Just visit dhtml central . ... I think it's free, and if you drop by the site forum, you'll even get support for free, free I say, crazy!
... yeah only if you have the money to publicise it properly.

PS3 before Halo 2, that's what I like to hear ;)

There's also this on the BBC today:
Life looks good for
Linux
Whereas the Guardian
(a Liberal paper?)
and the UK's Computer Weekly
continues to use the shall we say 'not the biggest open source fan in the world' Jack Schofield as a technology writer.
I believe someone posted something about him a few months ago. If you find and read his previous articles, you'll see what I mean.

I used to like squigs which was similar(ish) and came on a coverdisk of an amiga mag ... er, this was some years ago.
...
anyway if you think thats simple try this
(flash game)
I really like it, but then I'm biased. Yes this is a shameless plug.

Call me a philistine but I like it loads better than Pikmin. Pikmin is far too hard

Well I'm off to the Macromedia site to buy it now, just in case ;)

Isn't SVG open source?
The intention is that the game be used by third parties as part of their viral marketing campaigns.
As for a point to a game, I think it's meant to be just for fun.
Relax.
