a better pricetag. It's sad that all the other commercial boxes out there have really been pretty miserable in their execution, therefore allowing the squeezebox price to be so high since it actually gets the job done properly and has little serious competition. A number of multimedia (think divx video output) solutions exist for much less than the comparatively limited squeezebox. I just ordered an A/V Hauppauge box for $65 - I'm sure I'll end up cursing at its interface and wishing I could afford a squeezebox - but I think that ultimately for that kind of cash video capability should be included. I hope that apple steps up to the plate on this one, I believe they might prove the only worthy competitor at this point.

you're right that it may be natural to speculate and re-reason through the errors of others - but it is still a rather grotesque act - as the higher ground would be to primarily reason through how to prevent the heinous (the former reasoning perhaps existing only as a means to the latter).
In this case it is especially disturbing that someone chose for such a malicious statement to be publicly broadcast to such a large audience, especially since it is written in the first person (this is how "I" would execute my crime rather than, "perhaps this chap might have gotten away with it if he used the following clever suggestion"
It's akin to, "if I were robbing that bank, I would have shot every person in the head - that way no one would be able to rat me out" - this sort of statement is revealing as to a more crooked rather than curious line of thinking.

this might boil down to useless symantecs to you - but I believe there is much more too it

this article is in fact sinister in and of itself. For those who have not already, I would not recommened RTFA - it's a load of faulty logic that doesn't add up and finally culminates with the uninsightful revelation that rebates are the corporate world's gift to mankind and we should show some gratitude to our marketing overlords. WTF?

Rebates work because of breakage and interest made on the delay - they are generally a pain in the ass and are a perversion of the common free market practice of purchasing goods. Sure, if the deal is sweet enough I will succumb, but I (once more) feel like the kid who has to do a little dance to get his stolen lunch back from the bully.

  9. i want a standalone device on Apple Enters Media Center Domain · · Score: 1

I've been searching for a good network device to integrate my computer with my stereo system and television. There's a bunch out there, but no one has executed it gracefully - hence (in my opinion) the relative failure of these devices. The squeezebox products seem nice, but are overpriced and not very multimedia oriented. The situation as it stands seems relatively akin to the pre-ipod mp3 era; I believe apple could probably succeed in pulling off a standalone network media center with the proper interface and a decent pricetag (I'd argue for the $2-300 range) and perhaps a higher end model that offered what I believe would be a unique feature for this line of devices - an integrated capture card with a memory buffer allowing bi-directional media transfer (maybe a later model could include a HD for a full out DVR integrated system). I broke down and recently ordered Hauppagues system, but I know I'm in for a dissapointment.

apple's mcd appears little more than a remote control perhaps with a slick interface - ho hum -- perhaps its a test bed for a network media hardware device though? I hope so.

but this is not "new" or news - everyone is cognizant of the fact that more people die in auto accidents - and while you may have dug up a great story in the time of Henry Ford, we have come to live with and understand the risks of driving, and we can or at least can convince ourselves that we can take measures to reduce our personal risks - we feel that we are in control of this situation. Hence, reporting your cited statistics as news would not only come across with a major "duh" factor - it would provoke almost no emotional or intellectual response whatsoever.
Meanwhile, a rare bird virus or suicide bomber could potentially take you out tomorrow, and most of the population finds this unsettling because they like to imagine they have some degree of control over their destiny - and they have no idea how to act to protect themselves from these unlikely, but serious threats.

I'm afraid you don't give people enough credit - people that are afraid of flying aren't stupid, they know that statistically they are safer in the air than pretty much anywhere else - but they feel very removed from their typical settings where they are able to make decisions that lead to consequences. Sure the media is manipulative, they love to report about airplane crashes and terrorist attacks - but by wishing that the media report what everyone already knows and is comfortable with, you become as ridiculous as them.
