    And all five people who bought them greatly enjoy them. So do the other hundred thousand or so who downloaded them via torrent because 'all software should be free', further throttling Linux game development.

    As much as I'd like to see it, you're dead wrong here. The vast majority of consumers wind up with Windows. The rest wind up with OS X. A vanishingly small number of people are moving to OSS.

    Despite the misleading title (should probably say first OFF THE SHELF switch in orbit), it's pretty cool how they tested these. From TFA:

    Switches from Cisco, D-Link, Avaya, 3Com, NetGear and Hewlett Packard were exposed to extreme levels of radiation in a particle accelerator in Villigen, Switzerland under conditions similar to space.


    Makes one think more about all the radiation crewmembers get exposed to as well, even within the protective embrace of the Earth's magnetic field. That's one of the big hurdles to travel to Mars of course; long term exposure to varying levels of radiation (mostly from the Sun).

    I just think it's geeky-cool that they put them in a particle accellerator for testing though.

Then again, OP didn't say they were doing it as a research study; it just works for them so frankly the 'why' it works is far less important from a practical standpoint.

    No, the point is to make a utility that appears to innocently redact part of an image, when in fact the information is retrievable. It's meant to be a malicious utility that people would use without knowing that the 'hacker' could recover their full images.

    We wipe thousands of drives a year when we do rollovers. It doesn't take much effort. Most of the time you don't have to sit there in front of it.

    The regular newspapers and news outlets pay the AP for access to reproduce full articles, and also credit the AP for the story. Many blogs just rip whole stories for free and don't even provide proper credit.

    Simony went up on a Soyuz. We're not talking about the same thing with Brin. If things go as planned he'll get there via a privately owned and operated flight. It will still be a Soyuz but it won't be owned and operated by any government agency. Hence it's the first private spaceflight.

    And when it's a great phone and not just an ipod touch with a phone grafted to it, even more people will consider one. The iPhone is a great overall tool, but it's not a great phone in my opinion. That is of course just my opinion, but for me the lack of keys/buttons and the relatively poor phone performance are deal breakers.

    You do know that a very, very small percentage of 18 to 30 year olds enlist in the armed forces, right? That's not the reason, but your first point about people not buying as much is a major factor.
