I rent out rooms in my house in a college town and I was not allowed to post an ad in the local paper stating that I was seeking a grad student or professional roomate, ie no undergrads. Instead I had to answer many phone calls from 20 year old party people that would be very out of place living with a bunch of physics grad students.
I ran an ad on craigslist that fully stated that and no one bothered me, no complainers or undergrads. Apparently on the racist part bothers the users, but the fact that I cannot legally state any preferences on who I want in MY home makes me a little angry. The fair housing act needs to differentiate between roomate ads and renting a vacant dwelling. Letting someone live in your home is not that same as letting some one rent out an entire house/appartment.
eBay has 25K+ steady with 50 selling every minute. Some units are going for reasonable prices (360 w/ Zelda shipped which would cost 330-340 on amazon ), but many are still about 100 bucks higher than retail (not including tax). The volume is rather ridiculous and the listings are very misleading ( Wii sports = 5 games, extra controller = the one that comes with the system). There are 42 from my locale and from estimates that appears to be 15-20% of all consoles sold here.
I second that! A Mac is a PC that will also run Mac OS and You can do anything you want to do on Mac OS and on Windows or Nix just with different applications. There is no difference beyond that pick which applications you like and buy the appropriate machine/OS.
The wiimote is not just a tilt sensitive device. It does all that the PS3's ripoff controller does and acts as a pointer. You cannot emulate the Wii on ps3 unless someone writes a driver for and rewires the sensor bar to the WIi sensor bar. Why anyone would even attempt this is beyond me becuase it would require purchasing a Wii for the controller and sensor. And emulating the xbox 360 is simply absurd given that it's CPU runs at nearly the same speed and contains a completely different GPU.
Look even today there are no Xbox emulators and those consoles are x86 based!
Good points. Also the licensing cost of XP was finalized in 2001 and here we are nearly in 2007 with Vista. Certainly inflation has something to do with the price increases. We all tend to forget about those things. According to the first inflation calculator that google returned, 200 bucks in 2001 = nearly 217 in 2005 so I guess 10% ammounts to 0% price increase when taht is taken into account.
However the price of technology has gone down quite a bit in the last 5 years so I do see why he is complaining. Profit margins keep decreasing and all of a sudden there is a 10% rise in OS cost. They simply need to pass this on to the consumers.
The Wii really isn't 1st gen. It has the same GPU/CPU as the Gamecube except that they are 90nm and clocked slightly faster. Nothing revolutionary there. The controller is of course 1st gen, but seeing that the Wii controller is basically the Wii, I am pretty sure it works well enough that it's design will not change. As far as I can tell Nintendo has never needed to change/update its products except when they wanted to (GBA, DS).
The email I received from eb/gamestop had the same wording as the PS3 preorder one. Obviously they are just using the same language to get more to go out and preorder Wiis from them, but supply will not be a major issue with the Wii.
That's exactly how I feel. My PC isn't cool or whatever nonsense these mac fanboys claim, but I chose evry part myself and put it together. In fact I just upgrade now so I can build a new rig myself, not so much because I need to.
Well neither the ps3 or Xbox360 can play any Wii style games so clearly the traditional controller is not perfect either. And keyboard and mouse work great for FPS games but I need an aditional controller to place racing games and actually have fun. I also use that controller for old school emulators, but that controller sucks for the fps games. I guess everything just sucks becuase it is not perfect for everything.
Also as far as I can tell the game just supports the old school controller. It does not require it. The Wii controller can still be used as it has enough buttons, it just wont use the motion sensing ability. But I guess that is something bad where you come from.
How can you call experimentally demonstrating a neat aspect of quantum mechanics and explointing it the very hot field of quantum information "not news?" By your reasoning any advances in actually building a quantum computer will not be news either because we all know it is theoretically possible. Besides I know Onur and he is very excellent!:)
What something means mathematically is entirely different from what something means literally. Besides if you just interpret "times smaller" to mean 1/ then it makes perfect sense to both parties.
How can you really study atoms at the nanometer scale? Atoms are sub nanometer. The use in obsevation lies in some large molecule on large molecule action. The best use would be in making smaller features with photolithography. It may also be useful in quantum computing applications.
WTF. If someone cheats you will ban a whole class of users?! IN my last two hometowns, Boston MA and Urbana IL, there was/is only 1 cable ISP for tens of thousands of customers in a given community. Do you really think it is fair to ban the entire cable internet using portion of a major metroplitan area?
How the hell does a BS in CS entitle you to comment on the quality of UIUC? You certainly have no clue when it comes to how good this place is. UIUC is the #1 school for condensed matter physics research and this is due in no small part to all the collaboration between Physics, ECE and Materials Sciences and all the wonderful facilities any student or researcher can get access to on campus. Mit is only number 2 in this subfeild. And Melon? Carnegie Melon doesn't even rank.
Posting without reading for comprehension should be illegal, but sadly it isn't. Not so sadly is the fact that this bypassing of DRM is not illegal, at least to my knowledge. Can you show me the law that states that it is illegal to alter data that you paid for because I think I may have to stop using my PC.
I have never been a fan of Apple's business practices. I toyed with getting a powerbook last year but ultimately I went with an HP model because they let me choose what I wanted in it. Apple has a policy where it is their way or the highway. They have some great stuff but the lack of competition selling MAC hardware makes it unfun for people like me to buy. Also they way they deal with iPod is annoying. Want more battery life? Then buy the iPod photo for 500 bucks rather than the adequately sized 20Gb model for 300. They are constanly trying to push products that are more expensive than they should be by bundling options. Look at the iMAC. Neat little machine but if you want a good video card then you have to opt for a standard g5 rig at a higher price.
I really don't see the parallel with M$ but I suppose if Bill gates was selling PC's then maybe. M$ hasn't even "forced" any upgrades to a new OS in 4 years. Apple on the other hand releases service packs for the price of a new O$. Oh wait that's what XP was to win2k. So Ok they are alike in that respect. Apple is just trying to muscle it's way back into the market but they are missing out on a large segement of potential buyers. People like me who want a good system at a reasonable price.
As for iTunes it is just there to sell a product so why should it be compatible with competing technology? If you want to buy music for your non ipod then go to a place that has it.
For the record I do own a 20GB iPod and I love the thing.
That is a good idea for network/basic cable tv. I would download the legal files rather than the illiegal ones provided they were available at the same time. I would definately FF the ads though so I guess they would have to include some sort of DRM and require a specific player that would not allow that.
But if this type of system would work why couldn't they just put the ads at the beginning of the program? It would be more convenient to only have to sit through a couple of minutes of targeted ads or something rather than have to see the same ad 4 times throughout the program. As far as HBO or showtime goes they could just make the shows available in a "self destruct" DRM format fo a minimal cost.
The internet is not going away any time soon so companies with outdated business models need to adapt and try to make money off people and at the same time make them think it is free.
I am not a big fan of this BTX form factor. Though they only tested the micro size it seems they are trading decibels for degrees. Now that is fine for a media center type of box but what about a gaming machine? Until I see a rig with one of those power hungry video cards running at acceptable temperatures then I may be impressed.
But whoever wrote it clearly isn't a scientist for they think that fusion produces electricity and "Hydrogen." (Answer#6) Perhaps he was referring to them finding sources for Deuterium and Tritium to be used in the fusion reaction, but I bet he is just completely uninformed.
I think that Bush's responses were translated into English by the editors, but not into science because they don't want to make such a lackwit appear to actually know what he is talking about.
Well I happen to think that Firefox is better than IE due to the way that I am able to customize its behavior. I still have to use IE everyy once in a while for one of its features, Windows Update. Other than that Firefox has been sufficient. Besides I haven't even gotten a prompt to install Gator and others of that ilk. And keep in mind that Firefox is still only at v 0.9.2.

I think sooner or later this is going to bust.

Next thing they will be eliminating all the high paying R&D jobs in the US. Way to go Intel!
LOL
One of the few people on Slashdot who see Apple for waht they are. OF course the fanboys will mark your post as flamebait.
Those boots break easily. I got so used to having it on my keys, so once it broke I keep misplacing it.
They need to make it out of metal, or atleast line the rubber with wire

Is the speed intentional or has the site already been ./ed. It made me laugh either way

Well they could put a line telling you that you agree to destroy any copies you made before reading the EULA in the EULA.
