  1. Banked Overtime on Helping IT Save Money ... and Jobs? · · Score: 1

They implemented banked overtime where I work. Basically there's a set amount of paid OT for a time period, and anything worked over that gets put in banked time. You're then free to take a day or 10 off when you want to/can, without dipping into your vacation time. It seems harsh at first, but over a small period of time you start to appreciate being able to take the equivalent of 6-7 weeks of vacation instead of the alloted 3.

Depends how smart the ISP is set up. A smart ISP will separate their inbound and outbound servers, and only allow their own customers to connect to the outbound servers. An MX lookup would give the inbound servers, which customers would be blocked from using.

  3. Re:Assuming the Zombie's ISP doesn't notice on New Spam Zombies Use ISPs' Mailservers · · Score: 1

Depends on the ISP. If it's a mom & pop type ISP, yeah, they'll notice a difference. If it's a big ISP (think Verizon, SBC, etc..) who process probably hundreds of millions of emails a day, it's not that noticeable. Plus those controlling the zombies remotely are smart. They'll usually only send out small batches of emails per infected host (IE: 5000, maybe 10,000), and rotate thru infected hosts. Less likely to be caught that way.

  4. This is old news on New Spam Zombies Use ISPs' Mailservers · · Score: 1

This really is old news. I'm a sysadmin for an ISP, and we saw such viruses and infected zombies doing this early last year when we blocked port 25 to residential customers to everything but out own mail servers. About a month later, we started seeing huge increases on traffic coming from our customers, most or all of them being infected zombie boxes.

The bad thing is that it can get your mail servers on some blacklists instead of just some dynamic IP ranges, the good news is that it's fairly easy to spot such users and shut them down before real harm is done.

Box office totals don't necessarily show that a movie bombed anymore. With millions of people buying DVDs (which have a higher profit margin), a movie that bombs at the box office can make tons in the home market.

This is a bad example, but look at Family Guy. It had bad ratings when it moved the show around (comparitivily), but Fox is making so much money off the DVDs that it's producing new episodes.

This isn't really news, at least not to us Canadians.

  8. Consideration: Time cards on Pay-As-You-Play MMORPGs? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I haven't seen any comments regarding this. Currently, a few MMORPGs allow you to purchase monthly cards in store in lieu of having to use a credit card. A possible way of doing it is to allow players to buy timecards with a set number of hours on them instead of being valid for just one month's worth of gaming. IE: buy a card with 50 hours for 25$. That card could last you a week like it could last you a year, depending of how often you played.

PC games are a whole other story however. They just keep rising and rising with no end in sight and with a consumer base that will pay whatever the sticker says with no questions asked, the publishers are simply going to keep raising prices until they start down the other side of the cost/revenue curve. That's something that needs to change.

I'm not quite sure about the above comment. I remember paying 50$ for games 15 years ago. Most new games are in the 50-60$ range now. That's after 15 years of inflation. I'm not sure where you're seeing the price of PC games rising. They've been pretty much stagnant. In comparison, I remember paying 6$ to go see a movie back then, and now it's floating around the 12$ range.

This was not in their bargain bin or anything. Canon at that time was still fully supporting the printer. I believe it had come to market something like 6-7 months before. Windows XP gets released. I purchase XP and upgrade from 98. Printer no longer works. Canon outright refuses to release drivers for XP for the printer. To this day, there are still no drivers for it. Supposedly some people managed to get the Win2k drivers to work with it, but I never could. 300$ down the drain.

  13. Re:Outsourcing Musicians to China on Wal-Mart Squeezing Record Labels to Cut CD Prices · · Score: 1

" The price of a cheap plastic CD has hovered at $15 for two decades. We consumers deserve a price reduction.

The above makes no sense. By having the price not going up, you're actually getting your 'price reduction'. Over the last 15 years, the cost of living has gone up and up. Bread costs more, milk costs more, rent costs more, cars cost more, gas costs more, etc... I'm also making more salary wise than I was 15 years ago, or that someone in my current position was making 15 years ago, due to cost of living increases. Yet the price of CDs has remained constant. They have not increased with the cost of living and increase in salary. So in fact, in comparison to other products and services, CDs have dropped in price over the last 15 years, since you can buy more for the same price.

For argument's sakes, 15 years ago, a CD cost about the same as filling up your gas tank. Now for the cost of filling up your gas tank (30$) you can buy 2 CDs. Make sense?

But anyhow, here in Canada, CDs have dropped in price anyways. When they were first released 15-18 years ago, you'd pay 20-25$ for a CD (and about 9-12$ for a tape/vinyl). CDs now cost 12-15$ a pop (all prices in Canadian currency). Wanna buy music? order it from Canada! With the exchange rate, you'll end up paying about 10$/CD (+ shipping of course).

The guy is already loaded. Other than Episode 4, the guy made these movies using his own money, and still had plenty to spare.

You people who bitch at one thing because the story he wants to tell somehow 'raped' the memories of your childhood. Episodes 1-2 do tell a story that deeply ties into the original trilogy. 17. It all depends on Do You Go Out to the Movies or Wait for the DVD? · · Score: 1

For my wife and I, it all depends on the movie. Some movies are worth seeing on the big screen (IE: Sky Captain) wheras most can wait til the DVD comes out (IE: Punisher). Up to last year, it was cheaper/same price to buy a DVD (25$ average in Canada) compared to 2 theater tickets (12.50-13.50 depending on the theater). Now most chains (at least in my region) have dropped their prices down to the 9.50$-10$, so without food (never had to pay for parking) it ends up being almost the same price.

One good thing about staying at home is to not have to deal with annoying kids talking throughout the movie, flashing laser pens at the screen, etc.... I can't remember where I read this (maybe an Ebert newspaper column), but a theory as to why kids/young adults talk during movies is that they grew up with watching movies at home, where talking didn't matter. You put them in a theater and they don't know any better. Whereas older adults (30s+) didn't go through that.

Purchasing Ironports to cut down on spam is a bog cost. Buying all the associated software and licenses (cluster software, SAN storage licenses, anti-spam licenses, etc...) is a big cost. Adding backup solutions for these new servers is an additional cost. And paying the sysadmins to administer those systems is a big cost. When the ISP receives hundreds of millions of emails daily, and 70% of it is spam, the associated needed infrastructure is nothing but a huge cost. Your numbers are also way off. 20-30$ for a million spam? Hell, it costs the helpdesk about 10$ per call, for when customers are complaining that their mail is slow, or they can't send mail cuz the MTAs are peaked. And that's just from the helpdesk perspective. Not to mention running an abuse team, which is nothing but a cost.
