that's funny because back when Microsoft software became ubiquitous on PC, there was "command line" required.
Was your grandmother trying to read her email on these "command line required" PCs? I think it's obvious to say that GUIs opened up personal computers for non-tech oriented people and that a DOS prompt didn't. If anyone needs to use the CL for anything when working on their computer, it isn't user-friendly enough.
I really don't think there's any short-term solution to the problem.
Eugenics? It's not exactly short-term, but when we reach old age we would have a large crop of geeky and eager children to share stories about IPv4, Usenet and MUDs around the glowing 15" CRT.
I was trying to get to a share on my room mate's computer using "//192.168.blah.blah" through my wireless. When I accessed his share, I noticed that what I was looking for wasn't there and there were a great number of different people's resumes there for some reason. That's when I realized I had mistakenly logged on the neighbor's completely open wi-fi, it wasn't secured, the computer I was looking up was running Win98 and it's C:\ drive was being completely shared. The saddest part was that my neighbor was a half-way house for ex-cons who were on house arrest and the resumes I was seeing were theirs. I never got the courage to tell the administration about their lack of security as the place spooked me.
Install a piece of software under Windows, and there's really no telling where it goes. Sure, most of the code will live somewhere in the Program Files directory... But you'll wind up with some DLLs scattered all over the drive, and all sorts of registry entries. Un-install the software and it'll likely leave bits behind. Try to re-install again and you may find yourself with all sorts of odd errors.
As a relative newb to *nix (5 years?), this is one of the things I found great about its files structure. Most files have its designated directories which, if taken the time to learn, helps a lot with trouble shooting. Being so used to Windows being a scattered mess, I was troubleshooting things in Ubuntu like I would in Windows and over complicating my efforts thinking Ubuntu was more complex when it was actually laid out a lot simpler.
Yes. I'll pay more attention to super-intelligent robots when they're able to make up a really good story while sitting with others at a campfire at night.
I hate mobile phones too. I've refused to have one for most of my life. And if a person, be it Linus or anyone else, hates mobile phones as much as I do and likes the Nexus One, I'll listen.
I think industry-specific proprietary apps are missing, but you can do image editing, audio mixing, video editing, etc. all on Linux just fine. Gimp approximates 90% of Photoshop's features, and most users only use that subset of features.
But how many graphic design classes teach with Gimp? How many audio recording schools teach with Ardour, PureData, etc? Is there really a Linux alternative to Avid or Final Cut with working OMF/AAF/EDL export that will work with a Linux based DAW that has timecode and all its FPS types? Heck, even Adobe Premier has a very hard time getting OMF exports to work properly in ProTools.
Change woman to n****r and see if that helps you understand how fucked up and offensive this "joke" is.
Well, in fairness, I'm sure most slashdotters have had more interaction with black people than women. The "Funny" modders should be pitied more than scolded really.
This is true, but it doesn't address the argument that CG looks fundamentally unreal in a way that a physical object (even a lame puppet) does not...
This simply isn't true anymore. There are a very large number of computer generated objects in films that people don't notice. Some even need proof to make sure it isn't a real object like in the case of the cow being hit by a vehicle in "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?"
The American Humane Association, an organization that protects animal rights, mistook a computer-generated cow in the movie for a real animal and demanded proof before they would allow the use of their famous disclaimer, "No animals were harmed in the making of this motion picture." After seeing a demonstration at Digital Domain of how the cow was created, the Humane Association added the now-familiar (but then much rarer) "Scenes which may appear to place an animal in jeopardy were simulated."
Steam is great. They've had the potential to be evil since inception, but they seem to have realized that they'll do much better by treating customers well. I doubt I'll ever buy a game on physical (fragile, wasteful) media again.
Hear hear! There is nothing more annoying than a DVD or CD that won't read. I understand some of the foibles people have with Steam, but the convenience and great deals more than make up for it.
Just like the internet at first. So, with that in mind, we should have flying cars ourselves in about 20 years from now.
I assume yes, but I think it would be nice for the robot to clean up after sex as well.

How does a weasel like Kevin Trudeau gets fans by continually scamming people?

Don't change all the time like Windows seems to do. Be yourself and we'll accept you. Rebranding almost never helps. Consistency does.

Does this mean anyone who wants to replace the current leader(s) in government are subjected to this scrutiny?
Ingenuity? Humans seem to rule on this one.

I can't want to go mining for 6 hours straight to buy flowers for my cubicle!
"All awful" is a stretch. I would say EP IV, V and VI were entertaining and uplifting, but not enlightening or deeply moving.
And really, we all know George's best film was "THX 1138."
J' hope for how that functions well!
I can finally be a lot more accurate about my bowel movements whenever I call in sick or I'm late for something.

For example, AI works and is a very strong technology, but only the SF authors and idiots expect their computer to have a conversation with them.
Hello, I am Eliza.
A little late here, but I've recently started playing Oolite (an Elite clone) and really enjoying it. With a lot of expansions as well.
