Have any of you attempted to build a professional shopping cart and tried to get accurate sales tax working for states like California, Texas, and New York?
It's amazing how costly it can be because there's no easy way to map zip codes or any other easily looked up value to a tax rate. Zip codes can cross county lines and if a mall is built on a county line, there could be different sales tax rates within the same building. And yet, the states are no help in helping online stores to easily comply with the varying sales tax rates, even though they stand to make more money if people can more easily comply.
Even Paypal, Amazon Payments, Google, and other payment providers will not calculate sales tax for you, likely because it's so easy to get it wrong- The liability of miscalculating sales tax must be huge- Amazon has the money to fight the state tax offices but not a mom and pop online store.
There are several companies that exist solely to help shopping cart builders comply with the sales tax burdens of the different states, but the fees for using paid APIs can be high. One of these companies has map illustrating the problem.
I don't like it one bit but this rejection will be overturned. The judges look at the record as a whole to determine if the examiner made a prima facie (on the face) case for obviousness. He does quite a bit of saying "it's obvious" with no reasons. The appeals board will have no choice but to tell the examiner to try again with a different strategy.
I have a personal 1and1 account that is almost done its 3 year free trial and have had good experiences with it in general.
However, I started a free 6 month trial for a client who later didn't need it and had a similar bad experience canceling the service despite the fact that the the account had never been used. They insisted on me printing out some form and faxing it to them despite my repeated emails that i was not in the USA and I had no access to a fax machine. Finally, they gave up and cancelled the account but it was not stress I needed.
Despite this, it's likely I'll continue with them after my free trial as the service is reliable and they seem to have the best price/features ratio of any isp I've seen. The only thing they don't have is jsp/java servlet hosting.
I realize that the weather feature was just announced, but I think Google should be smart enough to give weather for the query " weather in palo alto, ca " but it doesn't- only if there are no extraneous words.
The palm boulevard article says special drivers maybe needed for existing sd card readers. I guess this won't be working in my digital camera anytime soon.
How could taking a picture of a street corner possibly tell you where you are? Don't most look alike? There are other, better technologies for telling you where you are, such as GPS or even just looking at the nearest street sign and typing the name of the corner into the map application on your phone.
AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is not a MPEG layer, although it is based on a psycho-acoustic model. Sometimes referred to as MP4, AAC provides significantly better quality at lower bit-rates than MP3. AAC was developed under MPEG-2 and also exists under MPEG-4.
AAC supports a wider range of sampling rates (from 8 kHz to 96 kHz) and up to 48 audio channels, plus up to 15 auxiliary low frequency enhancement channels and up to 15 embedded data streams. AAC works at bit rates from 8 kbps for mono speech and up to in excess of 320 kbps for high-quality audio. Three profiles of AAC provide varying levels of complexity and scalability.
AAC software is much more expensive to license than MP3 because the companies that hold related patents decided to keep a tighter reign on it. Most AAC software is geared towards professional applications and secure music distribution systems, so it may be a while before you see AAC in consumer-oriented products.
Lately I've been using Unison to back up to my ipod: http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~bcpierce/unison/ It's cross-platform and works on mounted file systems as well as ssh. Also if I add documents on my ipod, changes are made to the source (if I say so). All in all, it's a great little (free) tool.

I don't know what's damaging my eyes more- the awful purple /. theme or the awful purple background of the linked site.
I did a lot of research on this topic for my sensor networks class and we came to the conclusion that it would be highly inaccurate.

I wonder how much the USPS (and the rebate fulfillment companies) are going to lose from this.

"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and statistics." - Mark Twain
Of course 70% of statistics are indeed made up.
I did a little googling and found this (http://www.teamcombooks.com/mp3handbook/13.htm):
