I guess this will become much easier when broadband wireless access becomes prevalent (WIMAX, Flarion etc) since it will just be another USB dongle to plug in teh back of the Xbox360 or PS3.
No need to configure security, that's all done by the service provider...
Another board member who voted in favor of the standards, John Bacon, said the move "gets rid of a lot of dogma that's being taught in the classroom today."
Sure, and replaces it with the ID proponents dogma instea. Tough break for Kansas - can this be challenged by petition to the supreme court?
Now that's a common problem that I don't dispute - but it's partly caused by the fact that with so many new patent applications the examiners are pretty much snowed under.
Well that's interesting, but that effectively means that I as an inventor have to have the same knowledge skills and time as the patent investigators who do this for their job.
Somehow I think your idea will stifle innovation rather than drive it since no-one will file anything in case they missed some piece of prior art that they didn't know about.
Only if you don't mind taking a step back in terms of functionality. WiMAX doesn't support handover/handoff between cells and maintaining a call currently. They're talking about it but it is (as someone else mentioned) vaporware.
Plus, if this is unlicensed, then how are you going to provide SLAs to your customers that allow speech?
Of course, it swings both ways. Now if someone uses this exploit and steals your password (which is honestly rather unlikely), you know who to blame for making it public knowledge before Google had the chance to fix it. Blame, or sue?
For example, I can imagine that this will be the answer to national broadcasters who don't rely on advertising (BBC is the only one I can think of) who will jump on this as a way to transmit for next to nothing on the internet.
Now if they could only restrict it to people who pay the license fee it'd be a perfect solution...
You sir, need to go and play Eve-online. It's sci-fi, so miught not appeal, but it's all about PvP. There are certain areas where PvP is not allowed unless you're in a war (which costs a bit of cash, but nothing more), but in the high reward areas pvp is fair game for anyone.
Also, they've just introduced the mechanisms to capture and control territory by building stations in space which can be destroyed by other players.
I've just quit due to real life, but I'd recommend it to anyone who wanted to get involved in a sci-fi, pvp mmog.
1147 seconds * 30 megabits/sec peak rate = 4.3 Gigabytes in transit at any instant But how does that compare to a shuttle full of DVDs for a comms link?
and if the majority wants something, in a true democracy they would get it, since that is the defin, ition of democracy.
And that my dear man is the flaw with democracy. If the plebs can be led down a path that is immoral, racist, isolationist and imperialistic by one charismatic leader and his religion, then that's fine because *drum roll*
If you're after a spiritual sequel to Elite then you can't do much worse than check out eve online (www.eve-online.com) They're in the process of a massive content update introducing the ability for players to build, own and maintain their own stations amongst other things.
It also has a very healthy PVP element, with player alliances controlling lawless space through sheer force of arms.
I don't work for ccp (the devs) but have given over a significant portion of the last 18 months to them as a subscriber.
In other words it denies you a network connection. Compliance is "voluntary", but you are blocked from the network until you comply.
So if you're blocked by the network until you comply, how do you upgrade your software so that you comply? Not sure that people in the "I want it now" will be happy to wait for a CD to be sent to them with installation instructions...
Companies that join working groups should be forced to say "right, these are my patents, i'll share with you and if i pull out, i cant use them against you". I'm giving up the chance to mod this story, so listen up.
If you put the mandate you suggest on almost ANY interworking standards body, then very few companies will join it. This means that you have no interworking at all, rather than a large group of companies (minus M$) who are committed to getting this working

So a Wimax group says that Wimax is the next great solution to all our wireless data worries. Who'd have thunk it...

That's democracy kids...
Anonymous coward is certainly right. No courage of your convictions?
and is it really standarized yet? .16d (limited mobility) is pretty much standardised as far as I know. .16e (handover etc) is nowhere near.
Well, bonfire night in the UK is less than a month away. I wonder what the shipping time is on these. :)
How are these going to be re-usable after they've been blown into a multi-cloloured explosion?

- Have a virus scanner that is up to date
I don't even rely on the last one and I've been virus free for the past 9 years!
But if you don't use a virus scanner, how do you know you're virus free?
just hit refresh, worked for me

One of the reasons to join a standards body is to slip your patents into the specification, and thus chargel a licence fee for it.
Companies that join working groups should be forced to say "right, these are my patents, i'll share with you and if i pull out, i cant use them against you".

I'll be more impressed when a robot can tell it's arse from its elbow
