But isn't this exactly the way it's supposed to work? Someone innovates and someone else copies and the copy comes no where near the original, without having to rely on patents and litigation.
Not really. Mostly it uses a javascript object to make calls to the server without refreshing the page. Imagine validating entered part numbers in a table on the exiting event of the field. You can them make the field backgrounds turn red on the invalid part numbers (without the full round trip for the whold document).
There's lots and lots of hype, but underneath there's some really powerful tools.
Pages are loading pretty slow, here's the conclusion for those who don't want to wait: As you could see, the fact that we used two rather different Opterons for putting together the triple core system had an impact on the benchmark results that was hard to predict. Performance depends on the level of a program's thread-optimization, but we also had a hard time with some particular benchmarks.
Some did not work at all (AutoGK w/ DivX or Xvid, Pinnacle Studio 9 Plus). For others, performance was worse than that offered by a dual-core Opteron 275 configuration (such as with memory benchmarks, ScienceMark, WinRAR file compression and Windows Media Encoder). However, the majority of software we used was able to scale well thanks to the third core (which was the case with Cinebench 2003, PovRay 3.7, Cinema 4D R9 and 3DS Max 7).
I've never really understood the AIW's popularity. While maybe it's nice to have it all on one card, when it comes time to upgrade, which comes along depressingly fast for video, you've got to trash a perfectly working tuner. Why not get the video card and a seperate tuner?
More cost up front? Maybe, but my ATI TV Wonder is still working *years* after its purchase.
The minute ID becomes part of the scientific curriculum is the minute that I will demand the Aboriginal Dreamtime also be included as a theory of the creation of the world. Or maybe the story of Krishna? Take your pick.
Not to nitpick, but I don't think they are asking for the seven day creation story to be taught, just that there is a designer to fill in what may be perceived as gaps in our understanding of how things came to be. Demanding that Aboriginal Dreamtime be included would only elicit a reply to this effect and really get you no where.
According to this article, XSS is a bit of a misnomer: The term cross site scripting is not a very accurate description of this class of vulnerability. In the words of XSS pioneer Marc Slemko:
This issue isn't just about scripting, and there isn't necessarily anything cross site about it. So why the name? It was coined earlier on when the problem was less understood, and it stuck. Believe me, we have had more important things to do than think of a better name.
Check out the full article for a good description of the types of XSS exploits.
Yahoo's Music service? $6.99 a month or $60 a year for unlimited d'loads of the music they've got (which isn't everything but it's most of what I've looked for). True, you're more renting the music than owning it, but I've found more new music in the last two weeks that I've used it than I have in the last two years.

People are going to start *caring* very very quickly as soon as programs start expiring automatically and can't be saved.
And this is exactly how it should be. Let's all get up in arms over things we don't care about? If you watch pay per view and this gets in the way of how you use your TiVo then cancel your subscription, what better way to make your point? (Well, not you as I imagine you're not a TiVo user.)
As soon as this hits a show I want to watch and keep I'll be canceling my subscription. I debated paying the lifetime fee for my TiVo, but then I give up the only real way I've got to tell TiVo to shove it if I need to.
Wow, nice. Thanks for everything Mom and Dad, but you aren't worth my free time.
If my parents were local I would certainly help, but having spent *hours* on the phone with my tech-challenged dad I encouraged him to get a built PC with a service plan when it was time to upgrade. I love my dad to death, but those tech calls were torture.
*When did a criminal get this sudden hit of "oh my- what am I doing- I can't _OPEN_ this letter! I'll just scan it and see what i can find". This is someone who already intercepted mail and is about to commit fraud. Just open the envelope and call it a day.*
They scan the mail, get the PIN, then *return* it to the mail box and no one is the wiser. They've got your pin and the CC company never calls to ask why you've not activated the card.
From the FAQ (bolding mine, of course): Q: Will Peer Impact work from behind a firewall?
A: If your PC is protected by a firewall, you can still act as a source of content to other users and earn Peer Cash. However, PCs seen as firewalls can only act as a source to non-firewalled users, never to other firewalled PCs. Therefore, to MAXIMIZE YOUR EARNING POTENTIAL, you should really make an effort to open your firewall.
To determine whether you are seen as a firewalled user or not, go to "Preferences" under the Tools menu. Choose the "Transfers" option; the last item listed says "Behind Firewall". If this says "Yes", you should open your firewall so that you may be used as a source by other firewalled PCs. ...
I'm having a tough time thinking of ways this could get out to contaminate natural populations.
Bleh, as if the initial image of non-mobile, sterile meat blobs wasn't bad enough.
Agreed, but my sense of "fair price" is $10 for a music CD and $15 for a DVD. I'd buy lots more of both on impulse if they were these prices everyhwere.

Indeed, thanks.

Wouldn't a VM be better for this? That way you could have all the svelt of OS X without rebooting to use Windows just for those few apps.
So does this mean we can expect Firefly to be resurrected as well?
Maybe, maybe not: Recent Whedon quotes about the future of Firefly

This of course would require a peach tea bagging.
Marginally related are Warren Spector's thoughts on the issue, over at Gamespot. Very good read IMO.
This is specifically about Mario Kart DS, but the PA forums have a great thread with all sorts of info about the game and DS wireless here.

That may be, but I'm pretty sure my reply will make more sense if you read at threshold 0.
I think that you may have missed the joke? 100000(binary) == 32(decimal)

Has anything like this been set up yet? I'd give $5 to that.
