After spending a week of my life trying to work out why Windows Media Encoder 9.0 produced stuttery video on a brand new 4200 x2 based system only to finally pinpoint the ***** processor I have to say Im not impressed with this. No doubt AMD will be showing WMEs huge performance increases with x4 when transcoding but when it doesnt ****** work on broadcasts thats ****** useless.
Youre missing the main point with the Wii. Nintendo arnt targeting the hardcore, theyre targeting the same market that has driven the DS and Advance to be so successful. All its going to take is a few games that tie in the Wii to DS titles (e.g. transfer your dogs from Nintendogs to the Wii and use the Wiis controller to get them to work through crufts style events) and the Wii is going to errmmm wee all over the PS3 and 360.
My predictions:-
1) PS3 is going to leave Sony severly wounded and possibly even lead them to withdraw from the market. Its failior will take at least 1 major publisher with it. 2) 360 will be a moderate success for Microsoft but they will still be losing money well into the next decade. 3) The Wii will be the winner of this generation, spuring sales of DS units and leading to Nintendo becoming the major console player leading into the next generation.
Price really isnt the problem for a lot of people. I'll happily shell out £30-£50 for an enjoyable experience. The problem is that going to the cinema often ISNT one. Overpriced and poor quality food and drinks, poor leg-room, poor access to toilet facilities, obstructed views and sound...really the last time I enjoyed a trip to the cimema I was 20 and had a gorgeous young lass on my arm who provided far more entertainment than the film!
Seriously, as far as Im concerned "cinema" is dead and the only films Im likely to watch are on my *home* cinema system...if Hollywood wants any more money out of me than they currently get with my Sky+ and DVD rental subscription they either need to change the Cinema experience to either be a lot more pleasurable (I cant see them providing a young lass for me....and besides my wife might object!), exclusive (WTF cant I book a private booth with its own sound system?) or work out a way to get more money out of me from home. Which downloads would do....
IANAP but doesnt special relativity state something about time passing more slowly the closer one approaches the speed of light? I dont know what the difference would be at 90% of light speed (and I wont assume 90%) but Id expect the to make a significant impact on life support requirements.
..but little is known that both companies are trying to stake their claim in the video market as well.
And both are going to fail prity miserably while they fail to provide serious technical information on their video capabilities. I've a need for H.264 *encoding* accelleration and video capture atm but trying to get information on the exact capabilities of cards (especially AVIVO) was a PITA. Sometimes the marketing droids would e far better beingg replaced by a technician.
Anyways, pity the article doesnt look at anyhing apart from DVD playback - to be honest, how high CPU utilisation is while playing back a DVD is a long way down my list of priorities when Im looking at buying upto 8 £400+ cards. How about capture quality, driver stability etc etc?
The execs think "peer to peer" is a buzzword they need on their products but people, NORMAL people, aren't interested in the "peer to peer" part of P2P they're interested in the "free stuff I don't have to pay for" part of P2P.
Actually I dont think everyone wants or expects it for free, just at a reasonable price. Charging the same as a DVD for this is a sure way for them to kill it off and say "well, we tried but no one bought anything!".
If they were serious about this they would be charging DVD RENTAL prices and wouldnt just be "trying" P2P based distribution...they would be making a serious long term commitment to this as an alternate outlet for their content.
Heh, 10 years ago I was refused to entry for a Comp Sci BSC because I didn't have a Maths A level. Sadly I had to lower my sights and was accepted for a different course (Geography/Computing) on the basis of a 1 page "application" essay which concerned "why I wanted to do a degree". My entrance "examiners" comment on it was "Well at least you're literate....".
I thought I knew why she said this. I had dropped out of school at 14, had to return to do a smattering of O'Levels and since then (6 years) I had been bumming about. I was a smelly dreadlocked crusty and had gone to my interview after begging for bus fare to get there! It wasn't until a year into the course and having got to know some of my fellow students that I realised what she had actually meant was "Well at least you're literate in comparison to the rest of the morons I've seen today!"
Still, my examiner wasn't half chuffed with my when I graduated with 1st class honors. But now, when I think about the general standard I was being judged against I cant help but wonder if I actually deserved it at all.....
Actually I think the question with speech R&D is can IBM aford NOT to keep pouring money in?
At some point within the next 10-50 years, *someone* is going to develop SR technology that CAN act as a totally natural HCI. The potential profits from this exceed those of MS, possibly on patents alone! At the very least IBM is going to want the patent leverage to be able to take advantage of that technology if they are not the ones who develop it.
I am often suprised that MS/Apple arnt making a significant investment in R&D in this field, because when it happens I can forsee a paradigm shift as large as that between the text interface and the GUI. Possibly enough to totally dispace both from the market...perhaps IBM can see the possibility too!
OT and **** the kama. Probably down because they KNOW they are about to get SD'd and very sensible of them. Perhaps if more sites did this or actually blocked slashdot referals editors would actually post cached links to the articles. I for one am seriously BORED of stories where the TFA is unavailable to read and it isnt as if SD cant take measures to ensure TFA is available. A few years ago the SD effect was a joke. Now its just making SD look like a joke.
Sure some of those old "classics" were played just because there was nothing else to do but some of them hold up rather well. I can still easily lose a couple of hours to Kung Fu Master, Magic Drop, Amivar, Hypersports and others, but then Ive invested in a decent arcade controller which makes a HUGE difference in the "feel" of a game. In fact Ive played the above more than I did F.E.A.R or Resident Evil 4 since I cant help but get bored by FPS's (even FPS's with zombies and Dragons Layer elements).
Damn...now Im itching for a go on Wizball though......
Indeed! I actually managed to get my wife interested in this show on the basis of the first few episodes, which were VERY good. Sadly things really degenerated towards the end of the series and it really felt like the writers had lost direction and were throwing things together for shock value. Anyways, pity it wasnt at least given time to wrap things up.
Incidently this aired on the UK latenight soft porn^H^H^H^HSciFi channel about 2 years ago and reminded me of "Now and Again" initially.....and of course it shared a similar fate! Was EITHER series given any mention of being cancelled while they heavly promoted them? Like hell!
Well this just bit me and too be honest, the fact that it doesnt warn you that youre installing over an existing directory when doing the install *AND IF YOU DO DO SO IT BREAKS* I really class as a bug and one as bad as many Ive found in any MS product. Sure I like TB but good software should NOT do this sort of thing.
OK so silly me, feeling lucky today; thought Id install this over my old install since the version I was using (1.0.7) would open up and take 5 minutes to count the 150,000 unread messages that it *thinks * are in my inbox!
Doh, of course now email doesnt work. No errors messages, no message boxes, NOTHING!
Between this and FireFox 1.5 not displaying Flash, hogging massive amounts of memory, rendering some large pages a LOT more slowly than 1.0.x; crashing etc. etc; The Moz/FF have left me a lot less impressed than I once was...
The notation there used for the sizes is somewhat confusing, however given the source for that article (I cant find the original press release) refers to uses Terabytes and Tb, I thinks its safe to say that it is as I originally stated, GB (and hopefully GiB).
According to an article on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_Versatil e_Disc) a 300GB HVD disk is due Q3 2006 and an 800GB disk in 2007. If the cost of HVD manages to reach a similar price point to Blu-Ray/HD-DVD then both these media are going to end up dead in the water.....
Indeed, I was making just the same point (less eliquently) earlier today.
In fact, arnt they using H.264 for blu-ray? Id be interested to know how large a file would be for an hours HD content (on average). Roughly 2 GB would be my guess....I may have to actually try it:)

1) Receive spam 2) Sue the bastards. 3) Profit!!
With 2 years spam saved in my inbox (on another machine because eventually THAT became unmanagable) Im looking forward to this guys "spam kit". However Im wondering if Im only limited to sueing spamming companies...can I sue the services that have an open proxy, the ISPs that allow their customers to have an open proxy? Can I sue yahoo/hotmail for allowing their services to be used for spam. Oh the possibilities.....

Awwwww, dat funnie! Id mod you up if I could:)
So If I installed 8x 400GB Seagate drives (http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/datasheet/disc/ds _barracuda7200.8.pdf) drawing 12.8 Watts on average with a peak ampage of 2.8 (+/- 10%) I really shouldnt worry about the fact that the manufacturers product sheet doesnt tell me the peak draw (so I can just estimate it as @25W because Im *really* familiar with the normal peak draw on SATA drives) or about how many Amps my 12V rail will sustain?
Phew, glad your addition system helped me clear that one up;)

Yup, Im prepared to think the unthinkable.
I wasnt sat here on the couch with a Dell Inspiron 8500 on my lap.
I SERIOUSLY want to know what model that is....

Bah - I never have mod points when I need em :)
Thank god Im 34 and finally old enough for Nintendo to want me...
Which one?
