I got Rez for the Dreamcast when it came out, and I love it to bits - I even got the 'butterfly' ending - but it isn't original at all.
It's a very basic game, and the only thing that makes it play different to Space Harrier is that you can target eight enemies at once - which was done in the Panzer Dragoon games anyway.
Whilst the graphical style may be original, the game itself isn't.
I pointed out that cheating AI was a feature of both games, so your statement that the original was better doesn't follow from your own argument.
Yes it does. The cheating AI was acceptable during the 16-bit days and was not even noticed. I certainly don't remember it being mentioned in any of reviews.
Fast forward six years or so, and the cheating AI is so blindingly obvious in MK64 that it is embarrasing. From what I have played of the original since the sequel was released, it is more subtly done than in MK64.
If you have other reasons to prefer the original, I'd be interested to read them. I'm sure I'd agree with at least some of your points.
The handling is possibly not as good, though I do prefer the four player battle mode over the two player in the original. I have no idea why Nintendo only designed four tracks, especially when the donut one and the rooftop one are so poor.
The original Mario Kart was also entirely made up of sprites and used Mode 7 as well, but I didn't expect the same to happen in the N64 version.
Times change, and game design advances. The shoddy AI was very last-gen by the time MK64 was released.
I personally am looking forward to Mario Kart to come out. I don't care what all you anti-Nintendo people say about the games being "kiddy". They are fun. Who cares if I'm not gunning down helpless civilians? I sure don't.
Well done, mate. You managed to get your pointless comment early on, just to collect some karma points. Exactly where did the 'anti-Nintendo' comment come from?
Nintendo is a fun system and that's why I support Nintendo by buying their products and have never been disappointed with any of my purchases.
LOL. So, you have never been dissapointed by a Nintendo game...?
I think it has to do with "Form Over Function" people. If the graphics are good, the soundtrack is fairly fresh and expensive sounding, and there's some (Or a lot of) blood, they'll like the game even if it plays like crap. That's just the way people are.
What a load of tripe.
Mario Kart 64 was huge dissapointment to most people, especially the single player game with the cheating AI. MK64 was certainly not as good overall as the original one was.
Well, if I remember correctly, they went with cartridges not because of cost, but because of load times. Loading data off of a solid state device is a lot quicker than loading it from a spinning CD. If you'll take a look at the load times of some of the PSX and PS2 games, you'll appreciate why Nintendo did their best to keep their load times low.
Whilst that is what Nintendo CLAIMED was the reason behind their decision, it is false.
By going with the cartridge format, they controlled the whole manufacturing process and could then set what prices they wanted.
What, apart from the fact that they were the darlings of the Spectrum back when they were called Ultimate Play the Game you mean?
People who say that Rare have lost it aren't looking at the whole picture. When they first went from developing for the Spectrum to the NES they had lots of employees leave and everyone said the same thing about them back then.
Rare have been making quality games for YEARS, and many of their titles for the N64 were superb - Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64.
Every developer releases 'bad eggs', but that doesn't mean they are going down the pan at all.
Of course they bloody do - they have repeatedly said that they are NOT after the same market as Sony and MS are. It's a bit like saying that Disney doesn't market to kids. Whilst adults can enjoy some of the Disney movies, it is MARKETED at kids. To say otherwise is ridiculous.
Making three or four 'adult' games does not suddenly mean Nintendo are marketing to everyone.
You don't have the messages suddenly pop up in front of you, you get a small enevlope icon appearing in the corner of the screen. And you can 'hide' your online status as well.
Read what he said before blurting out with the standard Nintendo line.
Nintendo market to the younger kids, and have even STATED this themselves. They keep on saying that they are NOT after the same market as Sony and Microsoft - is it REALLY that hard for you to see why the GC 'is for kids'?
And for your information, yes I do own a GC. I hardly ever play on it though - Mario Sunshine annoyed me like Mario 64 did, and Zelda felt far too dated to me. Games have moved on since the last Zelda game. Super Monkey Ball was good, though.
There was an article about this game in the latest edition of UK mag 'Edge'.
They said that it currently looks pretty good, and the AI is very well realised as well - but the framerate is currently very choopy. It seems that the cause of this is more to do with the AI rather than the detailed graphics (for a PS2 game), and they also expressed concern over how they are going to also cram the online side of things in when it seems that there is so much to do still.
You can easily say that Disney have consistantly put out high quality movies - Lion King, Aladdin, Toy Story, etc. However, they have also put out some rubbish films.
Nintendo have certainly dissapointed me in the last few years. Mario Kart 64 had a shockingly cheap single player mode, Yoshis Story was a let down, and I found Mario Sunshine and Zelda WW to be quite mundane.
>They take a vary serious intrest in what is going to bear their label. Say what you want about their console marketing, but you can't fault em on game design.
Well, apart from the fact that they get keep churning out the same games and characters that is.
> >" OMFG. And Wind Waker wasn't exactly the same as Ocarina of Time?" > >Nope. Play it.
I found it to be very similar, and the Zelda series as a whole is too similar for it to be worth playing anymore. How many times can I play through a similar world collecting the SAME items? Boomerang, three different swords, a couple of bits of armor, a couple of gauntlets, the predicatble bow and arrow, etc, etc. Oh look, I cut a bush and found a whole Rupee in it. You wander around seeing various parts that you can't yet get to, and you just know what object you need to get there. Am I really the only one getting bored of Nintendo's games? Mario Sunshine was a dissapointment and so was Zelda - as was Mario Kart 64 and Yoshi's Story.
You CAN have split screen - it seems that you have to start a game on your own, and then press the Start button on the second controller once the game starts.
Really, MS haven't got all that much control over the games - as they don't host any servers to play on. All the 'servers' you see are in actual fact people hosting games on their consoles.
Although each person has a unique Gamertag that identifies their account, there isn't a foolproof way for MS to boot people who act like dicks. I certainly haven't heard of any cases of people being banned from Xbox Live.
I don't think that there has been a cheat device released for the Xbox yet, and that is the only reason why you don't find cheats online (beyond game glitches, that is).
Many people had found various shortcuts in MotoGP, and were allways using them to get stupidly good laptimes to put them at the top of the score table.
Why do these people even bother cheating online? They pay for the PS2, pay for the network adapter, pay for the game... and then ruin it all by going and spending more money on a cheat device.
It's just so self defeating as well - when everyone cheats, people stop playing. This means no more games for the cheaters to join. They destroyed PSO on the Dreamcast, and they STILL haven't learned their lesson yet...?
You arent the only one sad to see the DC go - its a sad state of affairs when a console with so many quality games can just sink into the ground like this. I really hope that the DC homebrew scene keeps on going, as it can be fascinating stuff.
I am still baffled as to why people bought into the PS2 hype so much - the DC had plenty of quality games by the time Sony's console launched, and it was months before it had its own high quality game.
Given that hardly anyone plays PSO on the DC anymore, I wonder if the games are still full of tossers 'player killing' everyone? I can never understand people who would rather go around spoiling a game for other people rather than playing a game properly. Even when the online games are a subscription service like Xbox Live, it doesnt stop morons driving backwards in MotoGP. Its utterly pathetic.
I know someone who has 'looked' at the disc already, and he says that it looks like there are at least two more maps on the disc - one of which is called 'Safe'.
Hell with 'downloadable content' like this, even the hard drive-less PS2 can compete...!
if the GT series stops being real and adopts a 'high speed persuit' storyline ill never buy one again.
None of those games I mentioned are about 'high speed pursuit', although Daytona comes close.
to me no racing game has matched gt3, NONE, it is the benchmark that all racing games are held to
I can assure you, that is certainly not the case. If you want a proper racing game then GT isnt any sort of benchmark at all.
and if you think graphics have anything to do with making a good racing game, you are an idiot (or an xbox fanboy).
Where the hell did you get this from? And seeing as how the GT series has been hyped about its graphics from the start, your 'point' seems a strange one...
all other racing games suck because they are not so purely about racing as gt3.
The GT series arent RACING at all, they are simply DRIVING games with crap AI. Le Mans was a proper racing game, as the AI actually competed with you as opposed to just sticking to the racing line like a bunch of drones.
Am I the only one who finds the GT games deadly boring?
Polypholy dont actually add anything to the games, other than to try and make it that little bit more realistic.
How about adding some AI to the CPU racers, or just make the game enjoyable to play. When PS2 owners were raving about GT3, I was playing the likes of Le Mans, Daytona and MSR on the Dreamcast.
Le Mans (which on the DC is a different game to the average PSX version) had you racing up to 22 cars with PROPER AI, Daytona was a classic arcade game, and MSR was doing new things with the Kudos system.
> They have discovered that the British Isles are
> tilting, with the north of the country gaining
> altitude and the south of the country 'sinking'
This is further proof to Northerners that they are all envious of us Southern shandy drinkers.
First they use the roads to move to London en masse, and now they are trying to swap the whole COUNTRY around by upending it and putting the likes of Liverpool and Manchester in the South!
Talk about 'mass migration'...
Its truly pathetic. You are truly pathetic. George Lucas, in my estimation, is a genious. He has managed to pull bits and pieces of mythology and form it into a cohesive and compelling universe that has enchanted millions for nearly 30 years! Lets see any of you do that, you little twerps.
How on EARTH is he a genius?
He only made the very first Star Wars film, and the latest ones are just selling on the back of the Star Wars name.
Whilst the originals had some good characters (Harrison Ford is a great actor, and 'makes' many films what they are), the new ones are just dreadful. The acting for the most part is appalling and if it didnt have the Star Wars name behind it, it wouldnt be anywhere near as succesful.
I loved EP I, can't get enough of EP II (I probably watch the DVD once or twice a month, including the bonus footage, I can't get enough of Ben Burt's documentary) and I am eagerly waiting for EP III, and I will, with a big huge smile on my face, happily pay for the new SW site.
Right. You claim that you arent a fanboy, yet you say all that.
What, exactly, consitutes a fanboy then...?
If you *hate* George Lucas so much, why do you spend so much time expressing that hatred?
We dont so much hate him, more the fact that most Star Wars fans are blind to the faults in the new SW films.
I worked with some SW nuts, and they just wouldnt accept that the new films have been bad. Their only reply is "but its Star Wars" to all criticism. If it wasnt Star Wars, they wouldnt look twice at it.
I got Rez for the Dreamcast when it came out, and I love it to bits - I even got the 'butterfly' ending - but it isn't original at all.

Right, so a gangster bloke doesnt like the more violent game but likes Animal Crossing.
Me, your average IT spod, hates Animal Crossing but prefers the more 'wholesome' games.
So what does that say about me? That I am going to end up working in a flower shop?

I am sitting here at work, pissing my pants with laughter.
You bastard.
