  1. *sigh* on Blue Security Gives up the Fight · · Score: 1

    There are OS X botnets

They key is, if you run malicious software, the malicious software owns your computer. Period. There are ways to get around this, of course, but anything that has any sort of startup or auto-run format, and allows software to be installed on the system is not "internet ready"

Sorry to "me too", but I'm going to repeat something you said, because it bears repeating. In big, bold, capital, letters.

MUCH LARGER GAME LIBRARIES AND USER BASES.

Sony assumes that because the PS2 had the largest game library, the PS3 will have the largest game library. This is not true. The game library will go to the machine that has the largest user base, for obvious economic reasons.

If the PS3 jumps out of the gate to a lackluster reaction, barring uber-killer aps (Meaning beyond Halo level), they should expect similar 3rd-party support to what the GameCube received, if that much.

I hear a lot of talk about price cuts in 2008 and things like that...each of the three companies don't have this long. This is a drag race, not a marathon.

And Sony is looking to have spun their wheels.

I currently play Guild Wars, mostly for the PvP aspects. I'm in a good PvP guild, Emergency Exit [EXIT] ftw, with some good players and good personalities.

The Factions PvE content, there's a bit less than in Prophecies, but what's there is WAY more developed and interesting.

Actually, there are OS X botnets as well.

Quite frankly, the only real security laxes that Microsoft has had over the last few years (after the OE preview patch, and limiting ActiveX componenets), were the Sasser/Blaster type things, I blame the IT people who ASKED for those services (the ability to run code remotely) to be included.

What people don't realize, is that once you run a malicious program on your computer, it doesn't matter what OS you're using. It can get its grips and do what it wants into anything. Short of running your OS off a read-only image, that is. (Which really isn't a bad idea)

It's about min-maxxing. It's about coming up with the best variety of skills, and using the strategy to beat the baddies. There are a couple of facets to jRPG gameplay. (Not just Final Fantasy, but everything in general)

#1. Setting up your characters in the right way for the situation at hand. Practically every jRPG since..FFV? Has featured some sort of ultra-involved and flexible character setup. Limiting it to FF series alone..it's about having the right Jobs, having the right Espers, having the right Materia, having the right Junctions, having the right Abilities, or having the right Gambits equipped.

#2. It's about the strategy and timing of the battle. Should you heal or attack? Buff or Defend? In some FF games, X in particular, it's about party formation and speed stats relative to the enemy. Fun stuff.

#3. The rapid advancedment of your average jRPG is fun. Very fun in my mind.

  21. Re:Today games suck on Games Industry Downturn is a Myth · · Score: 1

No, what I'm saying is that in the OP, the games mentioned are NOT what you consider to be "innovation" either. Like I mentioned. I just didn't enjoy SotC, or Ico for that matter..they're great games. Just not my taste. (As well is Final Fantasy Tactics, or the various stealth games. Not my cup of tea)

Exit? How about Sink or Swim actually originally a DOS/Amiga game apparently, or S.O.S, also for the SNES. Both feature puzzle-platforming gameplay where the goal is to rescure a group of people. Exit without a doubt is done better than those games. But that's not the point.

I have Amplitude as well, and love it. But from the videos I've seen of Guitar Hero, it should be fairly easy to pick up...the GUI of the basic gameplay looks similar. Does the guitar controller change things? Without a doubt. But it doesn't make it a completly new genre. I still desperatly want the game however.

Lumines is amazing. Way better than Tetris. But it's still a block dropper. (Meteos is MUCH better however)

Psychonauts again, is amazing. I suspect however, if the Meat Circus stage was at the beginning of the game, and not the end, our view of the game might be a bit different. For some reason that stage was awfully poorly designed, especially one certain boss that had awful hit detection...then the rest of the bosses are easy as pie.

Okami...I'm a Clover Studios fanboy. What can I say?

What I'm saying is that electronic games that create new genres are VERY rare for such a mature industry, and if you include other forms of media, probably don't exist. And when they do, they're blatently obvious. The two that come to mind are the 3-d platformer, and the empire building sim (which had been attempted in board-game form) .

I'm just tired of people being predictable by trying to be "independent". The gaming industry, as it stands is pretty damn good in the signal-to-noise ratio. The Half-Life2s are JUST as innovative as the Psychonauts are JUST as innovative as the various Final Fantasy games are.

  22. Re:Today games suck on Games Industry Downturn is a Myth · · Score: 1

Psychonauts is a very well made platformer. Guitar Hero is a sequal of sorts to Frequency and Amplitude. Shadow of the Colossus is a rather vapid platformer. Tramua Center is Operation:The Video Game, Exit..there was a very similar SNES game I remember. Gemoetry Wars is a Robotron clone. Lumines is a block dropper (I.E Tetris), Okami is Zelda-like.

All of those things are based on existing games and genres. Sure, most are great (yeah..even SotC is great. I just think that design them makes games that are better to look at than they are to play). They all have different twists and great executions.

Compared to the other games you mention...well...Madden is just football. But they do try something new every year. Have to give them credit for that. It doesn't always WORK......but whatever. Half-Life 2 introduced a physics playground into a FPS. Every Final Fantasy game with the exception of 1 and 4, and 3,5,X-2 and11, runs some sort of interesting system in order to gain power. (In the latter case, the job system is actually so good that I personally don't mind that they reused it.)

Gaming does not run on revolutions.* In fact, nothing in culture does. We all build on the back of giants. Those that expect that to stop are deluding themselves.

*Even the Revolution will not be a revolution...merely a massive step forward.

#1. True 3d control. Not just 360, but 360x360x360. Lateral movement+Depth+angle. This is the Revolution controller.

#2. 3d-imaging. Your standard VR helmet. Look where you want to look, combined with the 3d control.

#3. Full body immersion. Walk in the direction you want to walk, duck, all that stuff. Actually fight in a fighting game.

Both 2 and 3 DO exist, but not at the consumer level, and quite frankly not developed as much as they could be.

  24. A little bit of imagination is needed... on New Genres For The Revolution · · Score: 4, Interesting

Think of controlling...let's just say for common reference point, controlling a Macross style Veritech fighter in robot mode. You can make the robot go in any direction in any time by moving the controller in that direction. This ALONE would actually provide much more control than any other single controller that I've ever seen. Full 3-d axis control. Put on top of that the ability to change the angle of reference by pointing the controller in a different direction. It would probably be foreign for about..10 minutes? Then it would become comfortable. After a few hours, then it would become natural. After a few days of play, assuming a top-notch level of responsiveness, you'll be amazing yourself with the feats that you can perform.
