  1. I heard this on NPR on Microsoft To Make Wireless Networking Hardware · · Score: 4, Funny

  2. We need a Better Analogy! on Nokia calls Wireless Warchalkers 'Thieves' · · Score: 2
Would this be like a company having an electrical outlet that is not secured?

Panhandler breakdancers can come and plug their Panasonic 'Super-Bass' Ghetto Blaster Mark 12 into it, and spin on some cardboard.

They are stealing electricity; they didn't pay for it, however the company is at fault for not securing the outlet. Much like the reaction you will get from the insurance company if you leave your keys in an unlocked car and it gets stolen.

The breakdancers are not depriving the company of electricity; the light in the executive washroom does not go out when the Panasonic 'Super-Bass' Ghetto Blaster Mark 12 gets plugged into the street level outlet. If the company notices the breakdancers, they can get a locking plate and put it over the outlet.

If they do this the breakdancers may still show, but wont be ABLE to steal electrictiy. (Unless they bust off the cover, but then you get into the whole 'hacking' thing which I won't go into here)

Warchalkers are guilty of nothing but graffiti. What Nokia is trying to do is foist corporate responsibility on citizens!

Nokia doesn't want to be responsible for thousands of unsecured networks, so rather than help fix the problem, they are passing the buck to legislators who, as always will go after the symptoms. Which means that citizens will become criminals for nothing more than pointing out a problem.

Apparently, he sat there and did it for several hours while my pal went to a movie and got some grub. Came back, little brother handed the controller to him, and my friend started playing.

A little brother will work for many games where repetition is necessary. You might also want to try this with other small children. Neighbor children can be used in a pinch, under the guise of babysitting, or collect your own!

I even have a 720 Meg from years ago that was making icky noises, that I got from a *thrown* (across a room) together pile! of misc. computer parts. I reformatted it a couple of times; it works perfectly. I have NEVER lost data from HD problems. From any of my drives.

  10. This could only work for bigger acts? Ask /. ! on Bon Jovi Tries New Approach To Fight Piracy · · Score: 2
I don't see how this would work for a smaller band, since smaller shows aren't usually sold out, they (usually) don't have a relationship with the ticket seller, and unreleased music would be spread as soon as one file trader gets it.

Pehaps this could be submitted as an 'ask slashdot' (and promptly rejected), but what could a smaller band do to promote CD's in the face of file sharing? An old band I was in made little refrigerator magnets (by hand with markers!) for anyone who came to a show. What is something that is cheap and scalable, includeable in a cd, yet adds value (assuming the music doesn't suck :) to a CD purchase?
