"Alvarez Hypothesis" is the term used to describe the idea that dinosaurs died as a result of a catastrophic asteroid impact. I do not believe that the hypothesis has attained the status of theory, however. The main evidence for such a hypothesis seems to come from the observation of geologist Walter Alvarez of a significant layer of Iridium on the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary (KT boundary), due to the fact that Iridium is a very rare element on Earth but found in abundance in asteroids and meteorites. 4. Did we watch the same episode? on Can Cell Phones Ignite Gasoline Vapors? · · Score: 1

In the episode they also attempted to ignite the fuel using static electricity and failed miserably. They also varied the fuel/air mixture to the point of saturation in the chamber and still were not able to create an explosion.

Only until the very end of the segment when they employed a sparking device were they able to ignite the fuel.

Now, think about the concentration of evaporated fuel in the air surrounding your body as you fill a gas tank. It would be several orders of magnitude smaller than what was in the chamber that Jamie and Adam used in their experiment. I am not saying that it is not possible, just extremely unlikely. If Jamie and Adam could not get a chamber saturated with atomized fuel to ignite then there is even less chance that a minute concentration of evaporated fuel in the air around your body would ignite as well. This revelation is what sealed my conclusion.

Lastly, during the segment they also ran a clip of a fire department demonstrating quite effectively what static electricity will do when filling your tank.

Moreover, what happens if either of the viruses mutate? You could potentially lose the protective effects of the engineered virus and find yourself infected with a new strain of HIV.

Lucas has surrounded himself with "Yes, sir" actors, uninspired lines, and a dismal story. You can't have a civil discussion with a Christian. Christians like to think of themselves as rational, but if you observe their behavior you'll find they are anything but. They are full of anger and bitterness, and react with frightful outrage whenever they encounter someone with different views from their own. Even people who think that Christianity is a reasonable philosophy must admit that most Christians did not arrive at their point of view through anything resembling a rational process. Rather, they are poorly socialized individuals who are lashing out angrily at anything which they perceive to be valued by "mainstream" society. You really shouldn't take it personally. It is the result of an angry and profoundly unhappy psychological condition on their part, not due to you or your Atheistic beliefs.

  16. Flaw in their logic on Florida Ponders Communication Tax on LANs · · Score: 4, Insightful

How would the tax apply to a company that has internal networking? What about a PBX telephone system, would taxes be due? If not, then LANs must also be logically excluded.

More importantly, most LANs integrate with some form of WAN, of which a relationship must exist with a telecommunications company that pays these state taxes already.

From what I read in the article, the tax was only created to level the taxation benefit that large companies would reap from having a private phone system. Even in 1985, the year this tax was implemented, many companies had some form of internal networking to cover such devices as computers, computerized cash registers, etc. and they were not taxed.

    Doesn't make sense.

  17. My company takes this seriously on Computerized Time Clocks Susceptible to 'Manager Attack' · · Score: 1

I moved from retail droid to management to IT within a Canadian company, so I have seen all sides. I personally have never had any payroll issues and our system was changed some time ago to bar ANY changes to payroll hours -- once they are recorded nothing can be done about it. I suspect this was in response to managers shaving hours after the fact.

Now that I am at head office I have seen the other side of things. We have, in the past, disciplined and fired many managers for pressuring their employees to report fewer hours. It got so bad they finally turned to the IT department for some answers and we developed a completely new payroll system that, among many things, pulls hours and sales every day for each employee and records a weekly schedule. This had the effect that district managers would give more hours, employees could verify their hours and sales, and managers could schedule more effectively.

My company still does stupid things, most companies do, but in this case it listened to the voices of change and the retail droids actually make more money now.

Let's put it all on the table if we're going to deal with this problem seriously and take a good, hard look at how musicians are compensated from both ends -- producers and consumers.

I have a feeling a lot of record companies would tone down the rhetoric or employ frantic hand waving if their business practices were exposed to some scrutiny. I do not understand why artists haven't brought up the issue of royalties before the Internet and I'd wager the total value of royalties "lost" to file sharing pales in comparison to the amount record companies extort.

Personally, I do not download music from Kazaa and the like, but I have used Puretracks. If services like Puretracks or iTunes existed years ago we might not be in the mess we are now.

  19. GC will feature backward compatibility... on Backward Compatibility in Next-Gen Consoles? · · Score: 4, Informative

Must we tread the same ground over and over again? Nintendo has already indicated more than once that their next machine will be backwards compatible with the GC. A quick Google turned up this.

Sony has also confirmed compatibilty with the PSX and PS2. The Register has the story here.

The only wildcard is Microsoft, who seem to be leaving some of the important hardware specs to the last minute in an effort to meet or beat Sony. It is very unlikely that the Xbox Next, or whatever they're are going to call it, will be backward compatible given the facts that the machine will lack a hard drive, has moved to a different microprocessor family (IBM), entirely new graphics chip from ATI, and a redesigned controller without the black and white buttons.

In my opinion, I find the lack of backwards compatibility very telling -- almost an admission from Microsoft that the current Xbox strategy is a failure. Quite a pity, I really do enjoy my Xbox and backwards compatibility would have cinched me as a customer of the next machine.

Obviously most of this is true, but not to the tune of $1000, a 46% increase over the original price.

I live in Canada and the dollar difference is just enough to justify SOME purchases in the U.S. Shipping, duty and tax eat up almost of all difference. It's almost like it was planned that way.
