I work in a rural tech shop where 80% of the work we do is removing spyware and viruses because these farmers don't understand how to prevent it even though we explain it time and time again.
Been using Spybot, Ad-Aware, and MSAS. I have found that Ad-Aware still finds things that MSAS doesn't. Spybot will find things that neither app finds. It's like rock-scissors-paper. Sometimes you have to use all 3 and even resort to other tools, such as Hijack-This.
We have noticed that the spyware war is heating up and some of the new spyware out are behaving more like viri than simple spyware. More than usual that is.
Since I work on this crap all day, I don't want to work on it at home... SUSE Linux 9.2 Pro. No problems.
"The Linux community likes to hide behind the mantra of free and open software for all and as such has the twisted mindset that all software should be free for everyone. This should come as no surprise seeing
that the Linux community seems to take pride in stealing anything they can get their hands on and breaking laws designed to protect IP at the
same time."
Linux is flat out a great OS, one that is truly customizable and flexable. And Open Source Software isn't just great because it's free - but it's great because there are more and more people every day with an interest in actually making it better. For example - MOZILLA.
I don't mind paying for good software. What I am tired of doing is paying so much for hyped software only to discover it is crap wrapped in a bow.
Linux on the other hand has beyond what XP can do... The latest Distros out there are so good, and so easy to use... and OO.o has become so much better, there really is no reason at all to have to pay such inflated prices for Microsoft's crap.
I admire what Bill Gates was able to do with his little company and little actual tallent... but that doesn't mean I have to buy his crap.
The only good product MS has made is Flight Simulator, and Combat Flight Simulator. But my god do they have a vanilla name. It's like Ford coming out with a new 2005 Model "Car".
I have to admit to liking the Pentium 4 processor. I've burned up too many AMD Athlons to be totally comfortable with them.
I also like Dell's desktop machines. I've aways built my own machines, and this Dell I'm on now is the first box I've ever had that was mass produced.
It's impressed the hell out of me. The one thing that I really love - the case. Opens like a book and the drives are all right there. What other machine (other than a MAC) lets you do a hard drive swap in 10 seconds?
The performance is good too. Maybe not the fastest, but it's solid. Stable. And it's quiet. Getting a new optical drive when my old one burnt out the very next day was cool. To drive into town to where I could actually buy a replacement would take 8 hours round trip and 145 bucks in gas. (I've got an old truck) So having Dell just ship it next day air was awesome. For free even. Even better.
What's funny is that with my new job, if you call Dell and need some on site support... I'm the guy that shows up. How weird is that?
The processor and the storage is nice... but the lack of RAM and built in Wireless leaves this unit second choice.
I don't think it would be difficult to put Linux on a FlipStart unit but it's not really fair to compair when you look at the prices involved. For the money, you could have the Zaurus upgraded and buy the aftermarket wireless.
Of course if I had the money, I'd buy neither...

That right there is the object of my digital lust.
I'm waiting for Dell to make an Axim like the little NEC palm top - with a keyboard and it opens up "Wide Screen" like.
Then I'd buy one.
Linux, yes, you can run Linux on them. I put Linux on my iPaq.
OQO is cool... but...

This is all fine and well that you can emulate OSX on a PC. As mentioned before, you can already do that on PC running Linux.
But Cherry OS is really not an OS if you have to still go out and buy the Mac OS. And losing 20% of your system's performance? No Thank You.
I'm not that hard up to use a Mac.
Now, forgive me if I am wrong, but can we not already get a version of Linux that actually runs an OSX like desktop - no loss of performance - and you can run open source apps instead of insanely expensive OSX applications.
So in order to think Cherry OS is cool - you have to think:
1. It's cool to loose performance.
2. It's cool to pay more for the same software.
I don't buy this... I wont buy this.
I've been looking for a new OS... and this isnt going to be it. I'm not sure which one I'm going to roll with, but I'm leaning Gentoo or SUSE.
It's a way for the Telco to bilk you for more money while not really giving you anything tangible... much like Digital Cable where they don't offer internet as well. Like where I live. But oh... it's better... It's DIGITAL!
I like it. But I don't think I'd spend my own money on it.
As far as wireless goes, I need 802.11... Blue Tooth does nothing for me.
GPS would be groovy. Now if I could mount that on the dash of my Bronco, then I'd consider it instead of an Axim.
What can you do with it? I'm not impressed with Linux on an iPod or Unix in the game boy or Linux in the XboX things...
If you can't DO anything productive with it, It's useless. I don't care if you can put Linux in my digital watch.
Let's say MS is right and it IS better than Linux. (Don't kill me, just play a long for a minute)
Let's say that Windows is like a brand new Mercedes Benz, and that Linux is like an old Jeep CJ7.
The Benz is going to cost you an arm and a leg... and eventually it's going to have problems and those problems can be very expensive as well.
The old Jeep was like given to you... cost you nothing. Yet it can do everything the Benz can do... carry you and your stuff around just fine. Not as flashy as the Benz, but it works. If you need things for it, they are cheap and plenty and can be found in most junk yards and you can fix it yourself.
When it comes down to serious work... I'm taking the jeep.
Not only that, but an old Jeep is still cooler to gearheads than a new Merc.
Go back to the WWII Uniforms.
The were much more classy.
Indead of spending 250 million on this stuff - spend that money on training our men how to FIGHT.
We have become way too technical and soft, and it's costing us.
The Army should train like the Marines - Every Man is a Rifleman FIRST AND FOREMOST. They ALL know how to fight - even the Clerks. The Army only trains the Infantry to fight. Everything else is just support of that. That's not quite right...
I have a lot of criticisms of the Military because I was in it. 8 years US Army Infantry, Light Fighter. While I was in, we transitioned from the Steel Pot to the K-Pot (helmets). The old Steel pot was better in my opinion. Better jackets too. This new stuff might be high speed, but it lacks character.
What were we talking about?
Welding the hood shut. That's just great. What about checking your oil level, changing your spark plugs, changing your air filter, etc...
This is a bad idea. I could maybe see no hoods in the future when the cars are electric and you don't have an engine that needs regular check ups.
But as long as we still pump gas - we need to pop the hood.
Oh, and Volvos suck. Thank you.

I see dead people...
No one has yet referenced the cave man comic BC and his often riding around on his one wheel.
Play Doom 3.
So here we see the beginings of the Butlertarian Jihad. Where is Will Smith when we need him?

Assistant Crack Whore! Or is that the same thing as an IT worker?

The old site had all the info right on the front page... the Alphas and the news... this new version is worthless. Old Hottness, New and Busted.

A big inflatable boomerang? Come on. Where is the Cow Bell?
Wake me up when they make a flying Battlestar Galactica.
