How cool would it to be to have an iPod sized DVD player that plugs into a TV?

It wouldn't be a iPod sized DVD player if it plays UMD, not DVD :) I doubt that many would rush to replace their DVD players with smaller UMD units just based on form factor - you not only lose whatever software investment you've made in DVD media, but UMD doesn't likely have the capacity to store additional audio tracks like DD5.1 or DTS. It would be a downgrade.

Agreed. I'm sure the main reason for the numbers favouring Sony over Microsoft is the fact that non-techies don't understand the phrase "rootkit", but they do understand the phrase "fuck, it broke".

You can be a customer of Sony Electronics, without ever touching a Sony Music product. Which means there are a lot of non-techies who have no reason to have heard of a rootkit, because it didn't come on their Trinitron.

On the other hand, a non-techie would be hard pressed to buy a PC without Windows (Mac notwithstanding.)

Likewise, one individual's act of downloading a song or other work does not in any way hinder the copyright holder's ability to collect revenue from others, does it?

Theft removes the property from the owner, preventing them from enjoying ANY revenue. Starting to see a distinction?

From a moral perspective this is plain theft. You know you are taking something that does not belong to you.

In Canada, we PAY for the right to personal copies in the form of exise taxes. It is not an illegal act. If I were to download music, I'd be exercising a right. Your moral perspective is likely different than someone living in Canada, or Sweden for that matter.

But you don't want to call it theft because you don't want to think of yourself as a theif. So you call it other things, you insist on calling it 'copyright infringement'.

I don't call downloading theft or copyright infringement, it's not even a crime. The 'copyright infringment' that would have shut down the pirate's bay, and has shut down other similar sites, is providing content. I suppose that you'd call that fencing though wouldn't you? At any rate, you seem to be trying to accuse of a) the wrong crime and b) something that isn't even a crime, without even a shred of proof. Do you work for the RIAA?

That is exactly the type of thinking that led the Bush administration to Abu Graihb. They didn't want to think of themselves as torturers so they had a corrupt lawyer provide them with a convenient definition of torture.

    You're the one redefining theft.

Well, duh...the body will behave as it always has: under the assumption that while food might be plentiful now, it's not likely to be plentiful for long, so better stock up now while it can.

    And thus, obesity.

And the reason obesity is so difficult to deal with, and why sustained weight loss has such a lousy track record (95%+ failure rate), is simple: to fight obesity, you have to fight your own body's instinctive drive to "save up for a rainy day".

Consumption is not the reason for obesity. It's a factor. There's plenty of food for everyone in North America. Why isn't every single person, based on your theory, obese? The answer is hardly as simple as you say it is. I'm sure it's comfort to those struggling with their weight to know that their condition is the result of evolution, but it certainly won't help them lose the weight.

Sustained weight loss has a 95% failure rate? Bold, and likely untrue, but assuming for a moment that it's valid, that's 95% of who? Obese people? People who diet? Of the earth's population? There are many, many people who do not need to lose weight, and yet live in these lands of plenty. How do you explain them? Surely this insurmounable instinct has a hold on them too?

The answer is no where near as simple as you make it out to be. Obesety exists for a variety of reasons - but the most prevalent one, the one that strikes the majority of people is gluttony, paired with laziness.
