XXI. Nyarlathotep
And at the last from inner Egypt came
The strange dark One to whom the fellahs bowed;
Silent and lean and cryptically proud,
And wrapped in fabrics red as sunset flame.
...there are operating systems out there which dont require a ridiculous number of tools to be installed to let you get productive.
i mean really, install third party software just so you can talk http, ftp and ssh? but of course, i have been there:)
so heres my incomplete list:
true.
but on qwertz, { and } are reached by typing ALTGR + a number, which is far more hassle than SHIFT + [].
btw, the only character i positively never ever use while coding is the paragraph sigh []. does anyone know about a use for that one [i bet perl uses it;]
Step 5...
shout DAMNIT even louder when you try to type something and discover that the punctuation keys are completely different on a US keyboard to a UK keyboard. You can get round this with mappings but it is very annoying (not $1000 annoying but annoying nonetheless). If you were not aware of this already, then be aware as you will need to re-learn a few keys, and it can be very annoying if you are switching between US-UK computers/keyboards.
have you ever noticed that each and every programming language or shell is designed with the US qwerty keyboard layout in mind? with the german qwertz layout, you have to press 2 keys to get a backslash or curly bracket, 2 keys to get a semicolon, 2 keys to get a slash etc. not nice when coding in c.
because of that, i am using the qwerty layout, even if the keys are labeled qwertz. helps you learning to type blindly, though:)
printf("this is a %lx binary.\n",*(long*)getpagesize());
outputs the MH_MAGIC constant on osx and i386/bsd, but segfaults on i386/linux?
appearantly, linux does not load the binary to the lowest address in the address space of the new process?
well, seems like a good time to read tanenbaum again. and what better time in the year for that book?:)
so if i understand correctly, the avaerage Dutch citizen will be bothered by hc l33cher d00dz spending their holidays in the netherlands, in addition to the people from all over europe who visit amsterdam for buying dope, getting an abortion or looking at bestiality?
Is the little tune they play with each commerical free download? or do I have to pay for that too?
actually, the little tune will be pre,- as well as appendend to the actually purchased song. count yourself lucky if it is not added over the whole length of the song as a barely audible additional track, convincing your subconciousness to 'shop smart, shop wallmart':/

so, here i am, sitting at my desk with my sony vaio plugged in because the batteries dont last long enough, i have disabled my phone line because i dont want my laptop to answer calls, the phone line is connected though since i use a dialup isp, the lineout jack is connected to my (grounded) amplifier because i am listening to my mp3 collection, and i get a call on the one phone line i have and ZAP i get shocked? does not sound too unlikely to me.
of course, if no one ever calls you, you are not at risk. for a quick fix, break contact with everyone you know.

The much more serious problem is getting a disc of reasonable size that a gamecube can read to burn the games onto.
there was a solution for loading cress-compiled binaries over ethernet on the dreamcast... i see no reason why this should not be possible with the GCs "broadband adapter" [sic], in theory at least...

yup, using windows is like getting bit in the eye by a poisonous viper.

Hmm... Where did the Single 2ghz G5 Powermac come from? We know Apple doesn't make them...
AFAIK, it is possible to switch off one of the two 2 GHz processors for benchmarking.
