Even more so in kiosks where the company that put it there (or the library in this case) has branded their interface. When I go to Best Buy and look something up on one of their computers, it is irrelevant that it's a Windows machine because their frontend is plastered with their logo and lots of graphics to make it look cool.

When people use publically available computers, I don't think we expect them to look and feel like what we have at home.

This is why arts programs are being cut. Well it's the latest reason. In a more specific example, my current school district needs money to meet No Child Left Behind requirements and cut interscholastic sports from middle schools to get it.

That is, the complexity of the scene would dynamically adjust to the computing power (vague I know) available at any given moment. This is better I guess than the frame rate adjusting dynamically. According to them, the game could look better than it did on their own hardware if sufficient computing power was given to it.

Sadly the game was um buggy and a little um not very good. This doesn't diminish their ambitions though. They also pledged to support software renderers until every computer that shipped came with hardware 3D acceleration. When Sacrifice was released in 2000 I don't think that was yet the case. Pollution (if I remember from Econ 110) is a market failure. That is, the monetary cost of pollution does not match its actual cost, because the excess is borne by society in general. Who should pay for this excess cost though? Both the buyer and seller. The market's invisible hand won't make them do it, so someone else's hand has to. Or their foot.

The alternative is for a company like VIA to assume the cost up front to avoid this kind of pollution.

I don't know if the situation in India is similar, with monied interests having huge influence. The fact of the two major parties in the US creates barriers to entry into the election market (let's not pretend) which you can see in the fact that Ralph Nader was not allowed to attend presidential candidate debates in the 2000 race. Attend. Like sit in the audience. Both parties had their reasons for keeping him out I guess, but they shouldn't be in control of who gets to participate in the debate. In a larger sense as well.

I know others have mentioned this already but the console's protections prevent playing games from other regions, in addition to preventing playing copied games. Certainly there's a significant portion of console modders (if the posts here mean anything) who use mod chips to play out of region.

Now whether or not that's a valid use is another question, but it's at least worth mentioning that the console's protections aren't completely about stopping piracy.
