So it's basically just an ultra-miniature TV with a digital watch tacked on to it. TV doesn't rule my life as much as knowing what time it is.
I bought a new watch from Swatch, mechanical, autowinder, sweep second hand, aluminum band, skeleton front and back, 21 jewels, etc... awesome watch for $125.
I would rather have a nice watch that tells time and lives for more than 1 hour of use. This TV watch (both old and new, actually) seem to be for people with way too much disposable income.
Open Disk Utility, Click first drive conroller, Click "RAID" button, Drag first HD icon to box, drag second and etc drives to box. Choose RAID flavor and format, click Create. Voila!
I think the majority of the professional photographers are missing the point of this hack. The Digital Rebel is somewhat featureless for a DSLR, this hack adds a lot of functionality for amateur digital photographers to get into DSLR from regular point-and-shoot cameras.
If my budget was $900 for a new camera and not $500, I'd seriously consider the Rebel with this hack to supplement my Canon A40. I'm not earning my living by my camera so it doesn't have to be as physically robust or life-or-death reliable as buying the +$500 model.
But then again, if I was a professional photographer - I'd probably have a backup, right?

Umm, I was saying that out of all the times XP's recovery program has tried to fix an install of XP, I've had to wipe the drive out and start over because it doesn't work.
Btw: if it did a clean re-install of the OS as you suggest, wouldn't it move the damaged directory out of the way and put a clean one in its place?
PS: I forgot the #1 best part about OSX - no registry to get corrupted/slow down/kill a system from bloat.

OSX is far more reliable than XP and if something completely screws the system, you run your recovery CD, select "Archive and Install / Preserve Users and Network Settings" then you have all your user data saved but new system software to start fresh with. That fixes everything but a corrupt user (obviously).
The nice thing about OSX is that it's much easier to fix than XP. The archive and install process doesn't touch ANYTHING except the system folders and no personal information is there. It just disables them and moves them to a Previous Systems folder in case you need something.
Having worked in many service departments before, most sofwtare problems are solved with a clean OS but you have to back up all the data and sometimes dig things out from hidden folders - having worked in an Apple reseller service department, it's just a clean install and pick through the previous system folder a bit.
Time to fire up my company's 11x17 color laser proofer and print out sheets! I must confess that we're over our allotted monthly prints and it won't be free.:)
I have to buy a new battery for my Inspiron, I believe Dell now makes a 4100 (or 4400?) mA/h battery to replace the 3800 mA/h battery it came with. That's just one example to correlate the fact that batteries are getting better.
Lets see;
Lead Acid in the first laptops, then NiCD, then NiMH, now Li-ion. The cells have not only gotten lighter but can also store energy with higher density.
I'd love to see double the capacity in batteries but isn't this going the wrong way? If a device could be made to use 40% less current, wouldn't that be easier than trying to squeeze 40% more capacity into a cell?
All of the boards are different shapes with different connector locations (and presumably - different type connectors)? That's stupid. If this were a standard, it should mandate a particular set of physical dimensions for the board and locations for the connectors.
Who cares if you can buy a Dell Inspiron and upgrade the graphic card a year from now with a new one you can only get from Dell? What if you want to buy a different manufacturer's card or a 3rd party card? It's just another manufacturer lock-in if you can't buy an OEM board or swap cards between laptops.
are these manuals better or worse than Apple's (or the same?)
Apple's manuals are generally OK if you need to disassemble stuff but their diagnosis flow charts SUCK.
Wow, I actually got a little nostalgic:) two months ago I was up to my elbows in broken Macintosh, now I'm sitting in front of a MDD and flanked by a bunch of PC's in my cushy corporate job:)
Oh yeah, if you try to use a camera phone at night or in low light, expect your picture to come out at least blurry and at best extremely grainy.
One other thing that I forgot about my V400 - if you take an "action" picture, even if it's properly framed on the viewfinder and the resulting "frozen" picture still shows up correct, the ACTUAL picture that is stored to flash memory is 1/2 second behind! It would seem that the V400 updates its camera memory independent of its viewfinder memory, very stupid and makes for even more difficult to acquire images.

I have a Motorola V400 and the camera sucks on it. Open note to all who are looking to buy one: Unless you just want it as an emergency back-up camera like I do, don't get one for now.
The quality of camera phones out there now is way worse than the quality of very cheap digital cameras 6 years ago. Granted, the Kodak DC120 swimming in my desk drawer could probably whoop my V400's ass, it's also enormous.
Back to my point; there will be better camera phones in the next year, I've seen some (Samsung?) which will have macro mode and "real" flashes. The closest I've seen to a camphone with a flash was one that used white LED's and that was only as a framing aid.
Bottom line: don't waste your money now unless like me, you don't care about the quality of the camera because the phone is the primary function. If you want good quality, give it till the end of the year.
I'm surprised that there isn't a website (like www.imaging-resource.com) that reviews the actual camera of the phone and gives concise reviews based on quality, light sensitivity and optics. I guess camphones are still too much of a niche market for that.
You may as well make my car drive itself then - which is one step above public transportation - which is the reason I spend a ton of money on my car payment and insurance - which is why I enjoy driving my car. I didn't buy a 5 speed turbo-charged sports car to putt around in traffic but I also don't drive like an ass all over town.
I put in my two weeks' notice at my shit technician job today!!! With some luck and timing, I was the first and only interview at a small publishing company with 50 employees. I will assume the role of the IT Director and report directly to the owner who is a very cool guy.
This may not seem like much to you highly paid folks but I'm moving from $32,260 a year to $35,000 immediately and was informed that if I perform as expected (not hard) I will be making $40,000 in 90 days' time. I am EXTREMELY happy that my goal of the past 5 years has been achieved! I have always wanted to be in a position such as this and it's finally been realized.
My current (soon to be previous) job includes driving as far as 50 miles to customer sites to wrangle with computer problems and then come back to take abuse from my boss and deal with the stupid management policies. Want to know the newest mandate? If you don't know you have warranty (AppleCare!) we don't tell you and charge you accordingly. Shit like that makes me ill. I can't believe that such business practices are actually enforced. I was willing to take a pay cut to get out of this hellish job but fortunately I will be getting a dramatic increase.
I think I'm doing well, always taking a pay increase in each subsequent job and finally reaching my goal of being in charge of things! Being 28 years old and having your own office, good pay and a job that you're looking forward to is the best achievement ever!
Precisely! And regardless to wether the current/next gen phones have color screens, poly ringtones, games, whatever... pretty much every provider has a FREE subsidized phone.
I could understand if the whole point of this 'issue' was that the author couldn't justify buying a $150usd phone and that was the lowest tier phone sold by his provider. But for example, AT&T Wireless has TEN phones that are either free right out of the gate or free through an instant or mail-in rebate. They also have 5 phones that are between $50usd and $70usd. Of all of those phones, two are black and white. One of the $50usd phones even has a camera!
If you don't want to use the games, don't go to that menu. If you don't want to text or MMS, don't buy the package, if you don't want the web, don't log in. It never fails to amaze me that even though technology is becoming cheaper and better, someone always has to dig in his heels and say "NO!"
I have had probably a dozen cell phones, I usually get one every year. I'm probably going to get the Motorola V400 or V500 to replace my T720 in the next month. The only thing I'm upset about is the fact that my Nokia 8260 cost me almost $250 when it was new and the V400 is $99 after mail in rebate and is so much more phone than the 8260 ever was!
I'll wait for the Fingers Free Adapter to come out! My arm already hurts from holding a phone up to my ear. I don't want to know what pain will come from awkwardly holding my whole arm to my head!
