the major cost is distribution and retail sales space. Shipping a cd costs more than making one. Counting inventories, restocking displays, profits for truckers, retailers, etc all drive the price up for bricks and mortor sales. Look at allofmp3.com if you want to see the cost of distribution( not production) of digital music. They sell songs for a penny or two, make an insane profit I bet , and have no cost to produce or market the artists. That said production of an albumn is a few thousand dollars. Marketing an artist( esp the money paid to get the song on the radio) is extremely expensive.

I might have to pay slightly higher rent each month, but my energy bills would be lower.

I work in retail management. Our store sells PC's to a VERY low level user group. Many times customers come in with complaints that there computer is "too old" or "worn out" when actually they have spyware making it run slow. I think replacements may come from less educated users, thinking it is a hardware problem, less than people not wanting to remove known spyware.

On a side note, I had been ready to upgrade for some time recently. I had put off building a box( had half the parts in my house) for a few months. My 17 year old step daughter used my PC, infected it with a LOAD of spyware, some hard to remove. I could have fixed it, but instead figured beens I had to reload windows anyway, why not go ahead and build the box too.

well there are other questions: 1. What kinds of violent crime? Is it directed at the general population? In other words am I likely to get offed by a stranger or somebody I amm "involved" with. If it is by a stranger, arming myself is the only defense. I can however not hang around with people likely to kill me. While there may be more gun crimes of passion in an armed society. This is a trade off for a reduction in calculated crime on the populace. 2. Of those violent crimes mentioned, how many happened to people while they where armed? Armed people are not robbed, raped , etc as often as unarmed people. 3. What about studies comparing like areas controlling only for access to guns by the victimn or society? 4. What about places like here in TX. We had more restrictive gun laws, passed less restricive gun laws, saw a reduction in crime. We also have had no substancial increase in child gun deaths, etc.

well I tell you what. Take two people all things being equal. One gets a 4 year degree, in say education, the other at 18 years old becomes a plumber. Assuming both people are thrifty, hard working people who invest 50% of income( after basic living costs, not including student loans) wisely( in the same ways)who will be richer at 28? Who will be making more money at 30? Keep in mind in Texas( where I live) a master plumber takes in around 7-80 k per year. You can have your masters license in around 8years. All the while getting paid( 8-10 an hour for helpers; 12-18 per hour for journeymen) and taking out no loans. IF making money is the reason you are going to college, maybe you should try something else. Of course schools do not teach the ONE TRUE PRINCIPLE of getting rich: It can ONLY be done by increasing your assets. How much you earn can make it easier( or even possible) but that is by far not the only determining factor. If you make 1000.00 a day and spend 999.00, a bum on the street need only find 4 people to give him .25 and he will be in the same place as you are.

I think you miss the key point here. The author is saying that public education is a lie. It should be called public indoctrination(sp?). He is saying that having the goverment teach kids for teh good of society is wrong in and of itself, because they will always teach children in ways that benifit the society as a whole, not the student. There is a conflict of interest in many ways. You can not simply "make the current system work" it is flawed on a deep, basic level. People and gorups will always act in their own best interest.
