As I understand, Canada does not claim all of the ice around the north pole, simply a slice. The US, Russia, Sweeden, Denmark (greenland, part of denmark don't you know), Finland, and Norway all claim their own slices up to the north pole.
As for the SLS I assure you that passage is taxed by both the US and Canada, how else can the Canadian and US government afford to maintain all of those locks and things?
Finally, the US is no more interested in maintaining the passage for free than Canada. It will cost a tremendous amount to keep the passage patroled, ice free, and shipping laws enforced. I can guarantee you that the US will not keep free passage for the good of the world, and more than likely the US will charge it's own shipping tarrifs.
The United States has claimed several times that it does not fully recognize Canada's sovereignty over the North. The US believes it can (and does) move it's nucular submarines through Canada's north (under the ice of course!) without notifying or asking the Canadian government for permission.
If Canada trys to charge some sort of shipping tariff, the US is quite likely to ignore such a request. Moreover, it would not be surprising if the US claimed (annexed I guess is the correct term) the entire northwest passage for itself. After all, Canada lacks the capacity to nforce any shipping laws or tariffs (look at our coast guard for christs sake!), it's only logical for the US to step in and take control. So, I wouldn't get too excited about this being good for the economy... most likely this will be a Bad Thing for Canada. Good for you yanks though:).
Just the other day I was talking to a friend about why there is so much more interest in Mars than there is in Venus. There are plenty of difficult questions that more missions to Venus could answer.
I'm very interested in what the results of this mission well be, there is after all so much to learn.
Of course, we need an obligatory Simpsons quote here:
Wow, really? Did you know that there are more cops in the city of Toronto than there are in the Canadian Armed Forces????
Better yet, did you know that there are more cops in the entirity of the United States then there are in the entire US military.
My point is, your argument is bullshit. Of coruse there are more cops in the city of new york... there's 20 million people in New York for gods sakes! This puts nothing in perspective. Unless you have a war or something you'll always have more cops than police officers!
I agree with you, EMusic is great for getting more unknown artists that don't get radio play.
For example, for you punk fans out there; Epitaph has put every record current in print on EMusic, so for 9.95 a month you can build yourself a very good collection of punk music. It's a good deal, especially since they give a free trial:).
I got 4 entire albums, stuff that I couldn't find on Kazaa without paying a cent (then I quickly canceled my subscription;) ). Give it a shot, I wasn't disappointed; I may join them again and this time pay them.
If a CD was $18 Cdn (which most aren't where I live) that'd still be ~$12 US. In reality, the popular CDs tend to be around $12 - $15 Cdn.
Which is far less than you pay, but is still overpriced as far as I'm concerned.
When will you learn, things are cheaper in Canada!
Some of what you say is true, for example automobiles are far cheeper in Canada than they are in the US. For example you can buy a Honda Civic for 18 grand CDN, whereas in the states it goes for around 15 grand. Obviously not inline with the exchange rate of 1.5 cdn to 1 usd...
Unfortunatly, in Canada you'll be lucky to find a new artist for less that 20 dollars. As for old stuff, crappy stuff like the proclaimers or abba go for 15 dollars, whereas quality stuff like say the rolling stones can go for 25-30, and I have seen CDs for 40... all canadian dollars. The point is some things are cheeper in Canada, however CDs are more or less the same price.
As I side note, remember when records were like 8 bucks?;).
For what it's worth, as you probably know the train won't use the thrust from the turbine. Therefore engine reverse will do nothing, but you already knew that, didn't you?
People seem to have a short memory... does anyone remember the TurboTrain?
This train ran in Canada and the US until the late 70s. In had several problems which made it uneconomical to opperate, these problems were:
High fuel consumption
Noise
Turbines can be a very efficient power source, but only when running at their full RPM. A train such as TurboTrain has to stop at stations, as well as obay signals and speed restrictions. Therefore, because of this stop and go the train has to constantly do, the turbine is actually less efficient than diesel.
The bottom line is that this idea has been tried and it has failed. I'm afraid it's difficult to concider this announcment from Bombardier nothing more than vaporware.
Also, for people in the scientific community, open office cannot read Microsoft Office documents with mathematical equations in them. Mathtype and the Open Office math package are not compatible.
Well in all honesty, I can sort of see what your saying. I'm 20 and I didn't really get interesting in music until I was 16 (yes I'm a dork, I'd wager most of us on here are though) and I didn't seriously get into it until I was 18... I have to say that I was probably in the first 1 percent of people who discovered mp3s, back in 1997....
The point is I've never bought a CD in my life, and yet I have a music collection now that would ordinarly cost me a good couple thousand dollars. Buying CDs doesn't seem logical to me, and I don't see anything wrong with downloading music. If theres a whole generation of people such as myself entering into their "prime spending years" then the CD side of the recording industry will suffer substantially. Oh well, booo hooo, billionairs lose billions, I'm really sad, honestly:P
Oh, come back, proud Canadians To before you had TV, No hockey night in Canada, There was no CBC (Oh, my God!). And burned down all his stuff!
And the White House burned, burned, burned, And we're the one's that did it! It burned, burned, burned, While the president ran and cried. It burned, burned, burned, And things were very historical. And the Americans ran and cried like a bunch of little babies Waa waa waah! In the War of 1812!
Now some hillbillies from Kentucky, Dressed in green and red, Left home to fight in Canada, But they returned home dead It's the only war the Yankees lost, except for Vietnam And also the Alamo... and the Bay of... ham. The loser was America, The winner was ourselves, So join right in and gloat about the War of 1812
Huge sparks, loud noise, the intense smell of ozone. I remember the first time I saw a tesla coil in grade 6, a friend of mine's dad built hit a tesla coil for that years science fair. I gotta tell you, few science experiments have been more memorable for me. Most people are impressed when they're shown something that develops a potential 1000 kV!
Another interesting one, especially for maybe senior physics or 1st or 2nd year physics/engineering is showing a photoelastic material, you can really see how stress and strain as well as stress concentrations spread develop in a material.
The coolest experiement I ever did in 2nd year physics (it was an electricity and magnestism course, awful course by the way, I got a C+, my lowest mark ever:P ) was levetating a magnetic cube using a superconductor.... seeing that cube floating there almost felt like an illusion!
Oh, finally for a quick and fun effect (especially at the end of a 3 hour chem lab or something tedious like that) is pouring say a litre or two of liquid nitrogen on the ground, that gets people interested right away!
So I spent 5 minuites of my valueable time reading some of the artists quotes. The one thing that confused me is why all of these artist feel as though their being robbed. Perhaps they should pay more attention to making money in a way that can NEVER be 'stolen' from the. One word:
TOURING
Perhaps Sean Coumbs or Brittny Spears should spend less time sitting around complaining how they'll 'only' make a million on their next album and not two million, and spend more of their time TOURING... if you think about it, it makes sense. I mean, I'd pay 40 bucks to see a band a love, hell I'm going to see the String Cheese Incident in Vancouver on Thursday for 43.50. Now mulitply that by a few hundred thousand people, all over the country, thats a lot of money! Furthermore, concidering that artists make significantly more money on concert tickets than they do on CDs, since the record companies keep most of their CD money.
Touring is a financial model that can (and has made ) millions. Look at the Grateful Dead or Phish. These are bands that made millions of dollars, most of which they made by touring, not by selling CDs. Hell if you look at the record sales for Grateful Dead CDs, they rarely made any money, ususally managing to sell enough to break even.
So my message to the artists quoted on the music united website:
Stop whining and start touring! Realize that the reason people steal 'your' music is because they feel ripped off by you. You want your millions? Go out to the people and perform, most of us will be happy to come see you."
Helicopter Bus Services....
on
The Coming Air Age
·
· Score: 2, Interesting
Well, a limited number of places have something like that. For example, where I live (Victoria, BC) theres a helicopter service between here, Vancouver and Seattle, runs every hour. The use little, 12 person choppers.
This is however a very special case because it takes 3 hours to get from Victoria to Vancouver by land/water even though they're only 35 kilometres apart.
Most cities that are faily close together such as say Washington and Baltimore it just makes more sense to take a bus or a train, since it's far cheeper and there is no significant time advantage. (30 min by train as opposed to 10 min by helicopter). It just isn't worth it. Until the price of gas goes down (which it probably won't) or we find alternative fuel sources, there will never by any significant helicopter commuter services.
Sig? Quel est sig?
> I have no doubt that fuel will get cheaper
Oh bollocks.... gas prices won't go down even to early 90's levels, ever. I work in the oil industry and I can tell you that despite what you may think, there is not an unlimited amount of oil on the planet, it's sad but true. As fuel usage increases in the world and reserves go down, we may be face with a lakc in 50 or 60 years. It's sad but true, so don't expect gas prices to go down, because you'll be sadly disappointed.
No, but if 99% of the people that bought a Stanley hammer bludgeoned their wives, then we'd have something.
You're re-enforcing the original argument. Hand guns serve no other purpose but killing people (rifels and such can also be used for hunting, but no one hunts with a handgun). Most hand guns are purchased with the intent of killing someone. I mean even if someone purchases a handgun for self-defence, by self-defence they mean to kill someone trying to hurt them. The trouble is that most practical applications for handguns involve illegal activity, after all... self-defence with a handgun is often a crime (excessive force, etcetera.)
So it can be said that most people purchase a gun with the intent to kill or hurt a person, which in most cases is illegal. Therefore if you make kazaa illegal, you must make guns illegal to keep your argument concistant.
Theres plenty of examples like this, for example drug parafanelia (bongs, pipes, etc) which is used for illegal purposes 100% of the time but is still legal.
I guess the point is that it's not a question whether kazaa is used for illegal purposes is not. It's a question of money, and who has it. It has nothing to do with whether the purpose of kazaa is legal or not. If the record industry wasn't calling foul or screaming and crying (like Hilary Rosen for example) about lost profits, the gov't wouldn't waste it's time attacking kazaa.
As I understand, Canada does not claim all of the ice around the north pole, simply a slice. The US, Russia, Sweeden, Denmark (greenland, part of denmark don't you know), Finland, and Norway all claim their own slices up to the north pole.
