  1. Re:common carrier? on The Case for Free WiFi? · · Score: 1

Because here in lawsuit-happy America if some kid's parents found out he was looking at porn at the coffee shop they might sue the coffee shop, it's ISP, the maker of the computer, and the provider of the coffee beans. They would probably manage to get a settlement out of at least one of them too.

AH! Now some people may understand why I dislike Ralph Nader (and subsequently Senator John Edwards) so much. As much as Ralph Nader did to make the auto industry safer, the backlash was now everyone and anyone will sue you for anything.

They sold their Unix business in the 80's. Spun off parts of the company into Lucent and Avaya. Cingular owns their former wireless service. Comcast owns their former cable tv/internet system. SBC just bought their wired phone service. Surely there can't be anything left of them now?

  4. Re:WHY NOW? I'LL TELL YOU WHY! on OpenSolaris Code Released · · Score: 1

The opensolaris pilot team were a group of people inside and outside of Sun that were invited to have access to NDA materials and code while the non-free code was removed from Solaris. Some examples of the pilot members were Jorg Schilling (author of cdrecord), Ben Rockwood (owner of Cuddletech.com), Al Hopper, Rich Teer (active members of the Solaris x86 community), and site owners of many Solaris freeware sites. I was included because of my project on the Gentoo forums to bring the Gentoo package management system to Solaris.

  15. Make sure the cards can downstep on Cell Phone Service as High Speed Internet Link? · · Score: 1

At work, we were sent some Merlin UMTS cards to test. It turns out we aren't in a UMTS coverage area and the cards are usless, because it also turns out the cards they sent are UMTS only. It would have been nice if the cards that they sent were also GPRS capable. I guess the same would go eith EVDO. Make sure the card can step down to 1xRTT if you travel outside the EVDO coverage area. On the plus side, you can pop the SIM out of the UMTS card and put it in a GSM phone and make calls on it. That's something to consider as well.
