I used a similar policy when I was teaching as an adjunct - keep the phone on vibrate, go out of hte class to answer it, and if I hear it ring, I get to answer it. Beepers had to be kept on vibrate also (I carry one for servers to page me, etc).
Knoppix on cd, that will use either the new Linux AOL dialer (seen here on/. a week or two ago) or a broadband connection, and provide a tricked out/branded Mozilla (or firefox+thunderbird if you insist).
Dunno about that... I had a K5-166 that was just fine for 3 years, and actually seemed a bit faster than the wife's P200 with mmx. Maybe the 64mb ram on the K5 made a difference (the P200mmx had 48mb, both ran win95).
Same hear. Dual 450 ran fine for what I did, which included some gaming. Something died on the MB, and I replaced it with a dual athlon 1.2 system. Figure that'll do me for another 5 years, especially with a cheap upgrade to dual 2.8 ghz cpus when they become "cheap"...
Actually, while sitting in the dark last weekend (no power for 6 days, with a 4 year old and an 8 month old to entertain and keep sane), I was wondering about the possibility of a small wind setup just for the occasion - just enough to run a small radio, a low light (40w max?), and a fan. Maybe next time I'll register for FEMA and get my $800 towards a generator...
Saw something on a "finer living" type show about how corporations will sell seat time on their planes when they are traveling empty - just to put a dent in the gas bill. There are travel agents who will broker these seats out - no idea of a name though. Maybe checking in a large "business" city (ny, atl, etc) for travel agent who can do this may be a good idea.
After all, many of the most popular ones are banned from many roads in California and other states. Since its a MSN article, I''ll elaborate - they are popular because they are big enough to get the large truck for commercial use tax discount... which also happens to be the weight limit for restrictions on most residential streets in Californial (and other places).
Anyway, I think it is a shame website designers are forgetting about you... if it helps, I do test most all of what we produce at work on a 28.8 modem. Of course, we also test for ADA compliance...
Anyway, try using Mozilla/Firefox with that plugin that launches Flash, etc. only when you want it. Also, use the userContent.css file to block ad servers, images that have "ads" in the path, etc. Perhaps get a copy of that hosts file that kills ads, counters, etc. as well. - http://www.everythingisnt.com/hosts.html
Also, set your browser cache to a slightly larger size (10-15mb maybe?) and set it to check for new stuff only once per session.
I'm trying to use freecache to get the AVI version... but I keep getting redirected back to the real site. Anyone know why? Sorta thought that this is what freecache.org is for....
Wasn't there a/. article a while back about one of the ntp servers out there (some.edu in Washington IIRC) that was getting DDoS'd by a bunch of home-user grade DSL/Cable routers updating their clocks all the time? Isn't this basically the same problem?
Most businesses, libraries, etc. aren't using some non-default UI with IE anyway - except for all those extra toolbars, etc. If you think you can design a superior UI, why nto do it? The Mozilla/Firefox source is there for you to do it with, ain't nothing stoping you.
Thing is, it would be fair market value for the worth of the property if the buyer knew they were about to run an interstellar super galatic highway thru what is currently the dining room. Which is to say about 1/4 of what it really is.

Actually, that was Bill Cosby - or at least it was part of the act he did at the first Gator Growl he headlined (not hte one in 2002)...

If there is an implied arrangement to watch an ad in return for a service, then I guess, from one point of view, this is justifiable
OK, and the rest of my $60/mo cable/sat bill (with no 'net service) goes to what, if not content?

Well, waiting for Linux binaries was what was keeping me from getting it... who can I buy it thru to have it counted as a "linux" sale?

That 911 has plenty of computer in it... My mom's 84 911 (Carrera with the Turbo Look option kit) had the computer die once or twice...
:)
Now take something like my 356 - only computer in it is mine when I go to LAN parties.

Dunno. I got a fairly experienced Mac user slightly confused when I showed him an iMac running Debian last week....
Would private/contracted air travel work?

One more Quake/QuakeWorld vote. I mean, c'mon - we can now play it with OpenGL at 1600x1200 on a cable/dsl lines that make us *all* LPBs.
Hey, 56k used to be faster than most :)

Well, like Mel said in Braveheart - "At least the rain is falling straight down"

What's a cubit?
He did a good Gator Growl show...
+1, Reminiscent....

Tend to listen to a lot of Led Zepplin myself, with plenty of the Dead, Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and others thrown into the mix.

What about the ham radio gateways for email? (don't know squat about ham or how it works...)

Semi OT, and I agree that most text books are priced far and above what they are "worth", but have you ever seen what an adjunct instructor gets paid?
What kind of car is it? My '65 Porsche 356 has a 6 digit number...
