If the Academy'd had any balls or vision, they'd have nominated Andy Serkis and the Weta Digital Animation Department for Best Supporting Actor. (What?!? A performance is by a single heroic actor, not a team!)
Some day we'll see that, but it won't be until many great performances have been passed over.
It is a regex statement. Essentially, the string typically instructs a language interpreter (PERL, for instance) to search for a pattern and subsequently replace it.
In this case, it is replacing any instances of "is" with "eir"; thus, the following alteration is committed:
Before: but it's always sad to watch someone stoop to this level
After: but it's always sad to watch someone stoop to their level
There were no lines that are worthy of geeks repeating.
I'll admit to enjoying one line (and only one line) from Ep 1:
"You were right about one thing, Master. The negotiations
were short."
And, as Ewan MacGregor finishes this line, you can see all hope evaporating from his soul as he becomes painfully aware that his last opportunity to act on the 3-film project had just passed him by.
...the raid on the Hungry Programmers was the result of a miscommunication between Valve and the FBI -- Valve had actually traced the breakin back to an ip address in Hungary.
(collective groan)
Thanks, thank you, I'll be here all week.
...because, in the end, a game only needs to be fun. If you're having fun, there's nothing to feel guilty about.
The beauty is that there are many different kids of fun to be had -- visceral/reflexy fun; intellectual/puzzley fun; compulsive collection fun; competitive fun; violent ass-kicking fun... etc. Not one of these should inspire guilt. Fun is fun.
Come to think of it, the only true guilty pleasure would be playing a game not because it was fun, but because you were trying to prove a point to someone else.
According to a Time Magazine survey 19 percent of respondents believe their income places them in the top 1 percent of taxpayers. Another 20 percent say they're not in the top 1 percent now but will be soon.
Wow... that's pure gold. Do you happen to have a web link for the survey or article?
So, in conclusion, you're both right. The console RPG started out different from the computer RPG because of technological issues, but now-a-days stays different because of tradition. Of course, that tradition seems to be weakening, and to good effect...
The only reason that these rpgs weren't on consoles in the past has been storage. Consoles prior to this generation didn't have enough storage to handle the content without having to switch a multitude of discs, something the average player does not want to do. Nor did they have appropriate storage for the massive save-game sizes western RPGs are known to generate.
I don't buy that, because "Western" RPGs were being made back on the Apple II and Commodore 64 -- Ultimas 1-5, the Wizardry series, SunDog, Elite, etc. Needless to say, being floppy-based, those computer systems didn't have a whole lot of storage space.
No, I definitely see a cultural difference at work between "Eastern" and "Western" RPGs.
Anyone know if there's been any news on Sharp's Zaurus 6000 series? The specs and manual were released, but it was more of a leak through the FCC than official news.
It'd be nice to know more about pricing and release date...
That was my experience. I didn't stop wanting caffiene until about three weeks after I'd stopped. After that, no more headaches, no more cravings.
And I felt a lot better. Going off caffiene halted a bunch of health problems I'd had for a long time. It turns out caffiene reduces the effectiveness of the body's immune system. Crazy.
Even in mathematical circles, surprisingly little is known about him, and those who know him often don't want to speak publicly about his work.
Oh boy. People who know him won't talk about his work. That means bad news, I'm sure. Like... the proof solves the Poincare Conjecture, but as a byproduct it also proves that Cthulhu's going to wake up in 2005, and that he's really pissed.
Alias/Wavefront's Maya was designed for a 3-button mouse, since the application began on the SGI. The middle mouse button is utilized for common operations like panning, zooming, and rotating the viewport. Sure, you can do it with a wheel mouse, but it's pretty uncomfortable.
Everything in EP3 ends up the way things are when EP4 begins.
The irony of this comment is that it's true -- Lucas seems to have felt the need to explain every single detail necessary to set up Ep 4. Everyone ends up on their eventual planets, where they'll apparently stay for the next 20-or-so years, free from adventure or incident.
I was definitely excited Savage until I found out there was no single-player mode. I don't know why they'd omit this critical element. (No AI programmer?)
I've got an SL-C750, so I don't know about working on the 5x00, but I've found SDL versions of most emulators that required X11. I've got MAME and UAE running quite well. GBA is very slow, but the SNES is superb on mine. All the interesting new stuff seems to be coming from Japan these days.
When I eventually get some sort of dev environment up, I might see if I can port an Apple2 emu for you.:) Meanwhile, direct ports of Ultima4 and Ultima7 are available, or you could try running an Apple 2 emulator inside one of the other emulators (ST or Amiga, for example). You should be able to get pretty good speed out of the ST version.
Thanks for the info!
I'll give the SDL SNES port a spin on my 5600. And I don't know how I missed the native Ultima 4 port! Sweet!
How many more do you want? There are loads of them.
Yeah, I know, but there are all of these caveats. (I know, now I'm just whining.)
For example, a bunch of the emulators require that you run X11 on your Zaurus. Crazy talk. I've never gotten any of the MAME ports to work. The only supported MAME port doesn't work on the 5x00 series. The GBA emulator is astonishingly slow. And, unfortunately, nobody's created (or ported) an Apple II emulator.
So, yeah... there are a lot, but there are lots of things standing in the way.
Problem with most emulators is they aren't as much fun as the real thing (all emulated sound, display, speed, controllers, keyboard). I believe all fall short by not emulating paddles.
Most of my Commodore 64 stuff I do uses special utility cartridges, and a floppy disk drive or two. Without a true keyboard it limits it more.
That's why I wish there were more emulators for the Sharp Zaurus. The built-in keyboard makes a huge difference, and would be perfect for playing the old Ultima games!
What's bugged me for a long while now is that Warren Specter made a comment on Thief 3, one to the effect that he "doesn't get it", referring to the Thief genre.
I suspect it's part of a long-running public debate between Warren Spector and Doug Church about semi-emergent vs. stealth-style game-play. (This debate is reasonably represented by Deus Ex and Thief, respectively.) You can read more about this here.
In short, it's not that Warren doesn't "get" Thief -- it's that he doesn't necessarily agree with that particular set of design decisions.
i thought GTA1 sucked. if that's preposterous, i don't know. it's my preference, it's the way the game struck me when i played it. It didn't have the unifying attention to detail and theme that vice city had - the right balance of story, nonlinear action, polish and gameplay that pulled it up above mindless violence (just as half-life pulled fps beyond simple quake fests).
Just a quickie -- I apologize for that. Many folks use mean "GTA3" when they say "GTA", and I mistakenly presumed you were doing this.
Personally, I didn't really dig GTA(1), mainly because of the control scheme they chose...
Where are the small games? the puzzle games and simple shooters? Here they are.
Small Rockets is also a great mini-publisher:

Star Monkey and Ultra Assault, while unfortunately named, are awesome old-school scrolling shooters.

The recently released specs for the new 6000 series will include an option for built-in wifi, both Bluetooth and 802.11.

As another fellow said, Sundog was awesome. Also, Autoduel.
I'd also love to see someone remake Ikari Warriors with the Crimsonland engine.

Excellent points!

I mean honestly, do you really want to get into a console flame war?
I'm so conflicted. I support your console-loving agenda, but reject your liberal-hating agenda. Quick, someone tell me what to think!

Yeah, but it won't be finished if you don't stop posting to /. and get back to work! :)
D'oh!
THEY'RE ALL SEQUELS!
But Psychonauts isn't a sequel 8)

Needing X11 is, as you say, crazy talk.
