    the article missed it, in it's suggestiont that sony 'might' produce a box that converts video to clie.
    sony already makes it. Vaio desktops with the 'gigapocket' allow recording TV to the hard drive (and to DVD) and the video recording includes a 'convert to clie' software snip that lets you watch prerecorded programs on your clie.

    Buy a Vaio with gigapocket, buy a highend Clie, and you can have exactly what you want- stock software

    My understanding is the USB 2.0 spec causes other devices to SLOW DOWN
    to 1.1 speeds if everything isn't a 2.0 device.

    that means a falsely labled device running at 1.1 makes your printer/scanner/external hard drive slow down.

    much like one 802.11b laptop at a b/g wifi hotspot makes them all run at B speed.

    Take a glimmer at the Veo Observer..

    I own one, works great, they have a wireless version too,

    records audio, video, and quite adjustablke, wired for 200, wireless for 300..

    You could buy the wired version, and add a linksys wifi-ethernet brige for less than 100$. you can do this to almost ANY device with ethernet.. and instead of asking, does it have a wired port for backup- you can add wireless to the wired device

    My mother, is a nitwit when it comes to machines.. if I can have one on my network, and one on her computer, and know that within 24hours they'll always be synchronized?

    Damn! think about the usefulness of that?!

    plus, ideal for off site backup, I take pictures of my son with my digital camera, it's all stored on a maxtor external that my wife knows to grab in an emergency (fire) but this allows me to know I'll still have them if the house burns down.. one complaint, if it won't do ntfs/user permissions, I can't back up my porn at my moms house....
