More proof that there is no easy solution.

Add to that problem other hiccups like "IDN it won't enable with other parts of urls, like first level, third level or directory structures", and you can clearly see that the best thing would be to redesign the whole thing and start anew. And by the way, this comment comes from a native german speaker that would profit from those idn umlauts, too.

How about just removing any giving+trading inside the system at all, e.g. you can only posess things that have been given to you directly by the system or NPC? Kenosis-BitTorrent uses torrent files which specify a tracker of the
form http://hash.bt.kenosisp2p.org, where "hash" is the hash of the
    original file.

Kenosis-BitTorrent downloaders will notice that this is a kenosis url
and use kenosis to find the tracker that is handling this torrent
file. Standard BitTorrent downloaders try to resolve
hash.bt.kenosisp2p.org as normal. Our dns server will look up the hash
in kenosis and return to the client the ip address of the kenosis
node that is tracking that file. If that tracker becomes unreachable,
subsequent lookups for that hash will switch automatically to the next
    available Kenosis-enabled tracker.

Well, since there is a central DNS server at bt.kenosisp2p.org, how can they sincerely declare this to have no central point of failure? Yeah, of course dns propagates, but turn off this central DNS server and in a few days everything is gone, right?

You know what? I think we need sometime else besides the Torrino scale.

With all those asteroids, it's always the same game: high probability at the start, it goes up or down and after 2 weeks, we've got some numbers that really mean something, but the problem is that during this time, people start freaking out because they would like to hold to some true numbers, not just "probabilities that are bound to change".

So, what we need to communicate with even more weight than those torrino scale numbers is a "measurement progress percentage" and tell everybody "if it's not 100%, don't worry yet". That way, with the always updated percentage number, the masses can reliably hold to something, and know that "progress below 100% means that what we know is not reliable".

Actually, for the current incident, we don't have this number, so I really won't wonder if some people will be freaking out over the next few days.

  9. Mac Version dissected on GIMP 2.2 Released · · Score: 1

Ok, so I've got a bit of free time so if you wanted to know why we Mac folks don't like the Gimp (yet), here are my first impressions just from looking at this picture:
    http://www.gimp.org/screenshots/macosx_s creenshot1 .png

    - The toolbox. No floating mini-windows with little tiny titlebars etc. Wastes space.
    - Toolbox: Tool selection: It should be very easy to see which tool is selected at any time. Compare it to photoshop, which has every tool in a white box and the selected one is inverted, which tells you in a tenth of a second which tool is selected.
    - Lower part of the toolbox: the selection thingie on the left needs a clear border around it, now you can not see easily where the white ends and the toolbox starts. On the right side there are some lines that make this part seem "elevated" yet don't seem to have a purpose.
    - Layers window: Another huge titlebar. Plus that popup-menu looks dead too big. The arrows on the right side of the popup-menu are not centered. How can I create pleasing work when I don't like the tools?
    - The app name: X11? Not really mac compliant, isn't it? This should be Gimp. Oh, I guess I'll have to install that X11 first, which I've tried out and it somehow didn't worked right. Plus I didn't knew to to desinstall it again, the routine is quite flaky in that respect.
    - "Path options" palette: the tabs at the top look unfinished. All the widgets are too huge.
    - The main window: on the bottom right, there is a button with an unreadable caption obstructed by a resizing widget. This is just plain wrong.
    - The menu bar: Whoa! Now you've got a perfect place to put all your commands, quick to hit at the top of the screen, and you don't use it. I doubt that Gimp has only so few commands that you can fit them all in those 4 menus.

I really hope that Gimp gets better and better and most graphic pros will someday use a great open + free tool, but so far it still needs a lot of work. Just my 2cents. :-)

I can only speak for myself, but I work at a startup, and we use a Wiki everyday. Since we've got no IT department (yet), we have outsourced the Wiki to somebody like SocialText and it works great.

One word of caution, though: If you value your Wiki information anything (and you should, often it's a big value of your company), make sure that you make backups to some machines not in the hand of the provider regularly: a provider might go out of business, in which case you don't want to loose all your data.

And even more importantly: Make sure you choose a provider that supports an open standard, where you can find another provider to switch over just in case.

We considered many different wikis, but we found only one standard to be already so big that it's very likely that it will still be there in 5 years - and that the mediawiki standard, of wikipedia fame.

By the way: has anybody else noticed that Apple has created oversized screenshots with twice the resolution for Apps like Logic and GarageBand? 14. User-unfriendly Logic on Apple Releases Logic 7, New Jam Packs · · Score: 4, Insightful

Does anybody know why Logic has to be this complicated to use? From the top of my head:
    - A second menu bar? Why? It is unintuitive, defeats Fitt's Law and is just plain awkward.
    - Init files: to have a standard way of organizing, you have to save a project in a certain way with a certain name to a certain folder which I always forget. Apple's GUI guide simply states "after an app starts up, make it appear like when you left it"
    - Often times, Logic doesn't redraw correctly.
    - Icons vary widely in quality: Some are Aqua-esque, other's are 8bit-like, and even others are pure b/w... ?!
    - Hundreds of icons that do not line up, or overlap each other... looks sloppy
    - Sometimes bouncing works, sometimes it does nothing
    - Timestreching crashes Logic from time to time

These errors are all present in the (until now) most recent version of Logic. Emagic is aware of these problems: They have a buglist feature that all registered users get access to (I wonder why others don't... let me guess: because it might hold them off from buying it?).

Anyway, my point is: Now Apple owns Logic, and this app still does not behave in the way Apple asks apps to behave... it's just silly...

Anybody know why after all these years, Logic is still extremely unlogical (don't let me go into details about *these* things), yet they don't care?

Have a central registry with only an ID and a phone number. To activate your ID, the system calls you and tells you a number which you subsequently type in a web form. The "ID" is then considered "validated".

Your initial web app can now call the DB and ask if the ID is validated. If it is, everything's fine.

Advantages: Less privacy intruision (people only have to trust that the central registry won't tell the phone numbers anybody). Simple to set up for both the central registry and any service. Quite efficient (most people don't have access to more than a few phone numbers).
