we live in an absurd universe. The man who woke up today answering to the name Saddam Hussein is not the man who went to sleep the night before. The person who started typing this sentence is not the person who will end it. THE PRESENT HAS NO MEANINGFUL CONNECTION TO PAST. The idea that these actions are somehow "our" actions, that todays Saddam owns the actions of yesterdays Saddam, is purely a matter of mechanical nessecity - no more compelling than speaking of rocks "urge" to roll down a hill.
The man we will call Saddam who finds himself standing on the gallows, knowing he is about to die, will in no essential way be different than those young men women and children who suddenly found themselves coughing up their own lungs.
I wonder what bifurcation of history occured due to that glitch. That brief statement is imprinted in so many minds - how would we each have gone about our lives differently if that word hadn't been dropped?
my god google, i already have a bunch of rss feeds on my personal homepage - how the fuck isn't there an option to instantly use those.
its same nonsense with google maps! why arn't my weather locations instant options for local searches on google maps!?
honestly, as handy as google is for finding stuff on the rest of the web, each part of its emerging web-platform seems completely incapable of acknowledging the other.
So these societies can survive indefinitely, or will these diseases eventually snowball on them?
Also (and i'm really not being cynical here), in dealing with such a small and admittedly inbreed population, isn't natural selection particularly important, in the long run? Will helping these people cope with genetic disorders really be good for their future generations?
We're always going to dissatisfied with some aspect of these kind of personalized homepages - because ultimately our options a limited to their imagination. So, what if google created some kind of rss/html/etc. aware scripting language that let us *really* personalize our homepage? (ok, maybe a reduced version of some existing scripting language would be better.)
I'd like to open my google-homepage and see if anyone has replied to my comments on slashdot/some random forum/etc; I'd also like to use a small chunk of my gmail storage to synchronize my bookmarks to, then display a bookmarks browser on my google-homepage. So why can't i hack these things together? Half the reason I'm not switching back to ie when it finally gets tabbed browsing (the feature that originally attracted me to firefox), is that i'd miss all my old plugins. if google could pull of some kind of system like i've just described, i'm sure a lot of their use base will be sticking with them for a while.
And i think there's a hole in your reading comprehension skills - he didn't say anything about giving "enemies" money, just spending it in a way that "we're not their enemies at all".
It really really wasn't sarcasm.
What's actually so unfortunate about this "perception"? So if our ancestors were more farsighted we'd all be better off today. Great. But what the difference would that make to them - why should they suffer feelings of guilt and obligation to future generations, and for that matter, why should I? It's as absurd as investing myself in the well being of things outside my lightcone.
A lot of cultural energy goes into glossing over what a horribly asymmetric relationship we have with other generations.
I'm not going to live forever - why should it bother me if humanity doesn't either? Why should I make investments that I know I won't see any returns on?

What are the chances of upgrading the battery on this thing? Or better yet, can I expect sony to improve the battery life if i wait a while? If so, how long should I wait?

There should be a way to manage multiple identities/screen names under gmail, so that i don't have to give out the same email address to everyone

where "human interest" = primitive tribal/nationalistic urges.
