  1. Doctors have to cover their asses on America's Doctors Are Performing Expensive Procedures That Don't Work (vox.com) · · Score: 3, Informative

Doctors perform a LOT of tests and procedures simply as a guard against getting sued. Their malpractice insurance providers insist that the doctors cover their asses.

I know several doctors personally, and one told me that slightly over half his cost of doing business (and medicine IS a business) was malpractice insurance. Next time you walk into a doctor's office, understand that whatever you pay to the doctor goes to rent, salaries, utilities, insurance, supplies, and some $$ to the doctor himself.

It's been suggested many, many times that the solution to the rising cost of healthcare is tort reform or loser pays. Why won't anybody listen?

You're more right than most of the slashdotters here realize. Way back in college, we studied a few poems that nobody in class could understand. If the professor hadn't told us what they meant, we never would have known. I suspect the professor knew only because his professor had told him a couple of decades earlier. I doubt even the author knew what he had written.

No, there are two people guilty of murder - the idiot who made the call AND the police officer who pulled the trigger.

I'm not a "hater" of the police. My late wife was a police officer. I like and respect the police. Never had any problems with them because I treat them like human beings doing a thankless job. But the officer in this case was wrong, wrong, wrong.

The victim was standing in the light and couldn't see the police as clearly as they could see him. Stand in your doorway at night with a bright light shining in your face and tell me what you see. The officer could see him much better than you can in the video. There was no reason to shoot first. Even if the victim had a gun, he could not have seen well enough to actually hit any of the officers. They would have had ample opportunity to shoot back.

  5. Bah! Really? on Math Says You're Driving Wrong and It's Slowing Us All Down (wired.com) · · Score: 1

I was once in a traffic jam that had traffic backed up for miles. All the cars were equal distance apart, but none of them were moving! Turns out there was no accident ahead, no stalled cars, no reason whatsoever.

What happens is some idiot lightly taps his brakes, may to turn off his cruise control, who knows. Then the driver behind him, not knowing how hard the first one is braking, taps his brakes a bit more. This continues with drivers braking a little harder all the way back, so that cars a hundred yards back come to a complete stop. Of course, then all the traffic behind them comes to a stop. We've all seen it happen.

The answer is to never, ever touch your brakes on an interstate. If everybody paid attention and kept a decent distance apart, you'd never NEED to brake. Exits and on-ramps should be built such that all braking and slowing down would be done on them, not out in the travel lanes.

I need to know things like the weather, traffic conditions, family plans, etc.. If a local, national, or international news event will affect me directly, I pay attention and try to find out what exactly is going on. If it's not going to affect me, I ignore it (category #3).

I want to know things like some sports scores, how something works, how to repair something, how to cook with a new recipe - you get the drift. In this category are things I want to know now and some things I can learn about during slack times.

Everything else goes into the "I don't care about it" category. Not surprisingly about 99% of the news goes into this category.

Getting away from the phone can be done with a little willpower. Make it a point to at least put it in airplane mode when you're around friends and family. YouTube on Fire TV originally didn't play ads, but that was changed a long time ago. The app now plays ads before the video starts, and on some longer videos, part way through the video.

Accessing YouTube using Amazon's Silk browser also means seeing ads. I don't know about FireFox yet because I haven't installed it. It probably shows ads, too.

Both are clunky workarounds, and if this continues, I'll just get a cheap Roku and switch between Roku and FireTV. I wouldn't go full-Roku because FireTV is better and faster.

But it wasn't all about the ads. It was mostly about Amazon not selling Google streaming devices.

To begin with, I was planning to retire next year after my 65th birthday and the boss was okay with that. Then he comes back and says that as long as I keep working he will pay for my Medicare supplement insurance. So I agreed to work full time until I'm 66.

After that I can work for the company part time doing some of the easier jobs. It's something to keep me busy and earn some extra money. The boss already gives me all the easy jobs we have available, so it's not really going to be much different except I'll be working about 6 months a year and they'll be months of my choosing.

By March 2019 I will be working part time, living in a house that's paid off, and enjoying much more time at home working in the garden. Social Security + 401K + part time income = something I can enjoy.

The idea of customers checking out their own items is great in theory, but it just doesn't work that well most of the time.

I'll gladly stand in line to get money, but I'll be damned if I stand in line to give money. Want my business? Then make it convenient for me to shop in your store. That means hiring more (good) people and moving your ass a little faster.
