You don't really think your grandmother wants to spend weeks learning how to read her email on Linux do you? If they just want normal day-to-day tasks, like reading email or the latest news, go with Windows -- there's nothing wrong with that.

Why does it takes weeks to learn to read email? I put my Mother on Linux a few years ago after numerous crapware infections of her Windows machine. She uses it daily for web browsing, email and ICQ/MSN chat. She is not a tech-savvy user at all, and it took one session to show her how to accomplish her basic tasks. I installed the OS and set up her existing dialup, email and chat accounts for her.

Before you go me for setting up her machine, how does the Grandma you speak of install the OS, comnfigure her dialup connection, and get her email working? Either someone does it for her, or she uses the CD that the ISP sent her most likely. The OS your Grandma is using came pre-installed too, didn't it?

Putting the basic user (www, email, chat) on a windows desktop or a linux desktop makes no difference one it has been setup correctly.

BTW, her machine has not been hacked or had a single case of software being installed on her machine since using Linux. It just works. I cannot say the same thing for her previous Windows machine.

You could look at it that way. I prefer to think about how much code Google have contributed back to Linux to help make it faster, more flexible and more stable. This in turn helps make Linux more attractive to purchase *preloaded* on a server a company may want to purchase.

Also, the $35bn figure is probably referring to the projected total spent on server sales that ship with Linux, not on the distro's and support alone. Do MS server sales with MS OSes on them only count the OS price? I think not.

    3. What if someone produces a better desktop GUI? I switch GUI's every few months as improvements are made. Sometimes I just want something small and sweet like Fluxbox, othertimes KDE for some eye candy
    4. Not all development work requires a GUI. Even if it does, the logic should be seperate, not built into the GUI itself (Visual Basic anyone?). This allow the choice of GUI to become a seperate issue. You can use web, cli, GUI.... whatever :)
    5. Your window manager won't start? Thats a tradgedy under MS Windows as well as a Mac (OK, not as bad on the Mac). Under Linux I can just choose another window manager until I sort my problem out.
    6. Bah... thats enough for now.

I encouraged my Fiance to get an iBook as her latest machine, mainly so there wasn't a MS machine in the house. We still don't have *any* MS machines ;) The Mac is quite pretty and quite nice to use, but whenever I use it I always find myself wishing I was back on one of my Linux machines.

You might like the Mac, thats fine by me. Choice is good thing as it helps drive improvement. Competition improves the breed. Myself... I like the flexibility to have my machines the way I want them, not the way some company wants them.

Shouldn't the unknown issues be addressed as part of an R&D process? If you don't know how long it takes to solve a problem, as well as what resources (hardware, network etc) are needed, how can you possibly budget and estimate? Correct answer is you can't. These unknowns become major risks.

Part of the project should be investigating the unknowns, checking viability. Funding could be allocated to R&D to see if these problems can be solved. If the problem can't be solved (technology doesn't exist yet?) the project would be a failure to begin with (read entire budget down the toilet). If the problem can be solved, estimates can be made with some accuracy.
