If he knew how to make a plug, he would already know some electronics...
Do they still make those kids' electronics kits that I had when I was a kid (frighteningly long ago)? You can get to know the basics with springy wires instead of soldering and then apply what you learn to larger projects.
I remember going to the London Planetarium as a kid and seeing a presentation. They mentioned that the sun would expand and destroy the Earth in a few billion years. One of the audience said 'did you say million or billion?' The reply was 'billion', to which the response was 'That's alright then!'
I always thought that a flat - but round - Earth was a not unreasonable hypothesis (until you study it properly). After all, you look up in the sky and see the Moon and it's obviously flat and round - you only ever see one face of it.
It's wrong, but a reasonable mistake to make from the ready to hand evidence.

... Unless, of course, demonstrating such a 'gift' resulted them in, oh, being burned at the stake as a witch, treated as the weird person up the street, or merely made it uncomfortable to be around people. Imagine if someone could read your every thought - do you think they'd stay in a relationship with you for long? What if mind reading makes people want to live alone - for the peace and quiet? What if foreseeing the future means that you don't want to hang around with people when you know how they're going to die? What if your subconscious also has telekenesis, so that dream of falling from the 13th floor can actually come true?
I don't believe in these phenomena without evidence, but I can foresee ways in which revealing them could be detrimental to someone's chance at off-spring!

Ethics is not just about the subject of the experiment, but also about the experimenter.

The best way to look for a needle in a haystack is with a magnet. (The worst way would probably be to set fire to the haystack.)
