  1. Chainsaw Hands on Bionic Cat Gets World's First Implant Paws · · Score: 1

    They grafted the implants directly into the bone and fused the skin around them. When are we going to see this technology come to human prosthetics? If I lose my arm in a car accident, I don't want a fake arm attached to my stump with a suction cup, I want a universal mount embedded in what is left of my arm bones! I want to be able to adapt the attachments for whatever job I need (hand, grinder, chainsaw, soldering iron) using a quick release mechanism.

  2. Re:Replace their PC's with Mac Mini's on Computer Competency Test For Non-IT Hires? · · Score: 1

    I installed Deep Freeze on my parent's computer years ago after they proved themselves unable to handle the responsibility of a computer. It turned out to be a godsend and took much of the burden off of both of us. They no longer fear damaging their computer with their ignorance - they are one reboot away from a fresh machine, and I no longer fear their phone calls. Deep freeze is extra handy in that it doesn't stop them from using their computer; it just resets it back to "factory" condition each time they reboot. All the windows functionality remains and it stays out of the way. If they really need to make a permanent change, they just have to reboot in defrost mode. I spent years futilely trying to teach my parents to safely use a computer. But since I couldn't take the knife away from them, I could only make sure it wasn't sharp enough to hurt anybody.

    I did a stint in that hellhole. Montgomery Alabama is hell on earth. Period. The only reason the adjusted income for tech jobs there is so high is due to the incredibly depressed state of the city. Also, the Air Force is the only real consumer of tech there, so you have almost no choice but to work for the military. Take that for what its worth to you. The government bureaucracy is hip deep and most systems are antiquated at best. Avoid it like the plague.

  15. Girls are Evil on The World's Most Beautiful Equations? · · Score: 5, Funny

    A proof more than a formula:

    We all know that girls require time and money, so
    Girls = Time x Money

    We also know that time is money, so
    Time = Money

    Therefore,
    Girls = Money x Money = Money ^ 2

    Furthermore, it is commonly known that money is the root of all evil, so
    Money = sqrt(Evil)

    Therefore,
    Girls = (sqrt(Evil))^2 = Evil

    Hence,
    Girls = Evil

    I have had the opportunity to work on some of the AF's critical applications. They all run on Sunfires running Solaris. Windows is for the desktop, unix is for the servers. The only exceptions I've seen are the Exchange servers and the domain controllers. The whole reason for going with MS for the desktops, as explained to me, is that the cost of supporting and training the unwashed masses how to use *nix shifts the TCO so far that windows turns out cheeper. Also, the AF can bulk buy PCs at rock bottom prices with windows preloaded, which turns out to be cheeper than getting custom machines with linux. Here is a link to where the AF is going on the server end: http://www.stsc.hill.af.mil/crosstalk/2003/08/0308 acton.html

    I've got to agree with this one. Contrary to what many programmers think, communications skills in programming are equally important, if not more important, than coding skills. Being able to speak the language means knowing the words for things. Especially things like data structures and algorithms. Now, to get me a job:
    Import java.util.*;
    LinkedList ll = new LinkedList();
    ll.add(item);
    As a side note, this snippet illustrates why Java should not be heavily relied upon for learning purposes. The libraries do everything for you so you never have to learn how things like linked lists and such work.
