  1. DiVx brought this up years ago. on The Perils of DRM — When Content Providers Die · · Score: 1

The whole DiVx disc thing made this an issue forever ago.

We still have not gotten past what we would do about DRM that 'turns off' when the company goes under.

What a responsible company should do is give out the software necessary to either negate that specific DRM or at least to facilitate the making of authentication methods to be used at home if it can't be negated as in discs like DiVx.

Why is everyone hating so bad on Square/Enix?

    It is their game.

I have an idea. I am going to redo the Star Wars trilogy but I am going to make it all in cartoon format and then release it for free to the internet and expect to not get told to stop by LucasArts. The developers knew this time would come what they were hoping on was a buyout by Square for their idea and work. What they didn't realize is that Square could churn this out faster then they could spending all of their saved money.

  14. NOT Gamepad Only on Final Fantasy XI For PC Explored · · Score: 3, Informative

I am currently in the Beta for FFXI PC version.

You are not restricted to only gamepad. This is an option however and it is a hybrid where you can use gamepad to do your movements and your keyboard to chat etc..

    Do not be alarmed.

Overall the game is not bad. The character models are good enough graphics. The scenery has much to be desired IMHO but this is most likely due to it being a PS2/PC hybrid where both people play on the same server meaning patches need to be somewhat similiar etc. They can't use an entirely different engine on one system and allow them to co-exist. I think a lot of newer gamers that are wowed by todays graphics will pass this one by thinking that the graphics aren't up to par and so thus the gameplay must be horrid as well.

  15. Re:Intentional? on F-Zero Breaks Freeloader - Intentionally? · · Score: 1

I am almost 100% positive that the N64's only import protection was the shape of the cartridge.

The N64 itself was able to be modified to cut off a little tab that prevented the Japanese games from fitting inside the slot. This was also the same for the GameBoys if my memory still serves me.

To the topic of the Freeloader I would say great more power to Nintendo and let them do their thing. I would say that a better option though would be for Nintendo itself to release a Freeloader type disc and charge $50 for it and make the 3rd party one not work anymore. This would encourage people to import and would make Nintendo more money in the long run.

  20. Future on Console Game Prices Going Up? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I would think that as we move along to the future hardware will stop being so different and it will just be a matter of aesthetics or just which brand you want to back. Software will be the main difference. I would say raise the software prices IF hardware prices go down. People put a big chunk down for a high end PC and then they buy one or two games a year because they are still paying off their PC. Make a high end PC around $500 and games around $60 and then people will buy some more games for their cheaper nicer hardware.

Where you run into problems though is copy protection. People will just pirate that $60 game.

So in order to reverse it then charge more for hardware and infinitely less for software. I guess we will see how it turns out.

From what I have read on multiple fan sites FFXI is very linear for the main part of the game. The quests you do are all the same and lead to the same goal of uncovering the plot. How you raise up in levels is your own choice but there are only so many quests and from what I have read they are done in a certain order and then you watch a FMV. Sort of like the Asherons Call 2 system.
