I don't know whether this information has been stated already, but here are some tidbits about China factories;
1) Women usually work at the factories. This is standard. It usually has to do with the fact that they have smaller hands and that makes it easier to assemble/stitch/etc.
2) The men usually stay at their home province/little plot of farmland and take care of the families. This is standard business.
3) China is very poor. Especially in the northern provinces where crime is rampant, and this is where many of the factory workers come from.
4) Most factories provide a place to live and eat, and take a portion of your pay to cover it. The quality of your room and food varies based on your employer. Companies like Apple or Nokia or say the people I work with, YUM! Brands, are not going to support the shitty little factory that puts its workers in rat infested rooms. The factory a company like Apple works with is going to be held to high standards, will be inspected and audited regularly, and is expected to maintain these standards in order to continue working with their client. Often things like employee pay and living conditions are part of the contract (e.g. minimum agreed upon wages must be kept or else we take our business elsewhere).
5) Working in a factory is one of the most desirable jobs for the average Chinaman.
6) Working in a factory is the first step to your escape from the country. Hong Kong only lets in X amount of people per year, and your chances of getting there are increased by working, saving your money, etc. This then provides opportunity to bring your family to live with you/fly the hell out of there.
7) Working 15 hours is standard. Where I work we have Chinese employees (office types) to help us coordinate jobs, maintain relations, etc., and these guys never sleep. They all work very hard and very often. I send an e-mail at 3 in the afternoon (3am their time), and get responses back 20 minutes later. From people who should be sleeping. Except during the World Cup.
And there you have my limited knowledge from traveling to and dealing with China factories. Maybe it will help clear up the confusion for some of you.
Maybe those 165,000 people should have had someone who is actually supposed to represent them, like oh an elected offical, try to talk to the PM on their behalf instead of Some Random Guy?
My PC at home is very quiet too, and it cost me 1/5th the price of a whole mini just for the case (an Antec). It was worth it for a gaming machine, not worth it for a PVR (when I can get a near silent one so cheap).
For me the bottom line is that HD is a luxury, like a DVR. I recently got rid of my DVR subscription to save a buck, and after two years of having it, I don't miss it. I got rid of my high def channels as well, and went to basic cable. I love high def (who doesn't), but it's something that's easy to give up to save 30 bucks. When you don't have it, you don't really miss it.
And I've decided that I'm not waiting for an IntelMac to upgrade. The Quad G5 (which is what I'll be purchasing) is still the best bet for us professionals, and will be for at least a few years.
I don't know how many of you were early adopters of OS X like I was (I never had a Mac before then), but it was a really pain to have to run Photoshop under classic in OS X. And Adobe didn't come out with a OS X until I think it was version 7.
I'll never do that again, and you shouldn't either.
Parent isn't insightful, it's a troll. Jobs was rich already, what did he really care if he missed out on a few years salary. Gates and Ballmer are in the same boat.
"Alternatively, we could just bin the idea of copyright altogether and rely on the free market, telling content producers they may protect their content as best they can with the technology available to them (my preferred solution)."
Why, so people with money can swoop in and steal the ideas of someone who doesn't have the resources to produce a product? Free market caters to people who already have it all.
"The first thing I think of is the original Pentium when I hear the word Pentium."
Really? First thing I think of guys in shiny silver suits dancing around in white rooms...
But look at how smoothly it goes. Remember when Windows 98 came out, and the next day all you heard were reports of peoples problems?
Apple makes it look easy, that's why it is impressive.
Yeah, and a lot of us couldn't hear the enhanced lossless bits anyway, since we already have a ringing in our ears from years of listeing to loud music.
Parent is crazy, and must not be a Photoshop user. Reliability and quality is NOT why we use Photoshop - the featureset is what makes Adobe software so great. And integration. And management tools (see: Adobe CS2 suite).
I am a professional, and ever pro Adobe user I've ever talked to feels the same way. We put up with a lot of crap in years past to use Adobe software, and we aren't gonna stop now (especially since the software has gotten so much better).
She's dating a nerd, what else can she do?

Yes, because we'd rather talk about the game than actually play it.
If you enjoy playing with virtual dolls, go ahead. That's what offline is.
I'm a nobody too. Sometimes they just talked too much/too loudly over the movie.

The connection is to Diebold and the white house, douchebag.

Let it be known that someone got your Simpsons reference.
You are an idiot if you believe there was a "supply shortage" when they only sold 1.5m units. Idiot.

I believe that your "gut" feeling is your sub-conscience telling you what you really think is the right choice.

When someone leads out with "trust me" it is in your best interests to not trust them.
When playing FPS' stretching your fingers to reach those A S D F keys will be a major pain...
Nobody wants your tiny 48x48 pixel icon. Give me 128x128 or give me BSOD. (I'm a Mac user)
Do you actually have proof that this is the case, or are you just saying it because it validates your opinion?
I'm going to pistol whip the next person who says blog.
I got one for my 18th birthday, and it made a customer out of me for the last 7 years.
